We are literally known for the incredible way we always manage to bottle qualifying for the Euros or World Cup as well as our horrifically unfortunate luck at times. The list of bottlejobs is endless. A few things you missed which I think are important to put into context how often this happens: We needed a point against the Czechs and manager at the time Craig levein decided to play a 4-6-0 formation which is just beyond embarrassing to still go on to lose the match. In 2008 we managed to beat a prime France squad both home and away with James Mcfaddens insane goal which is regarded as scotlands greatest ever goal and still managed to not qualify. In the 2010 World Cup qualifiers we actually managed to go out on goal difference to Norway thanks to us losing against Macedonia in our opening game. In 2016 euro qualifying we managed to lose to Georgia yet again meaning we finished below Ireland for a play off spot. In 2018 we yet again manage to finish 3rd in our group and yet again this is thanks to goal difference. Drawing with Lithuania didn’t help. We have finished 3rd in our respected group more times than any other country in international qualifying history….

Going 2-0 down to the Faroe Islands inside 13 minutes, and the scorer of both goals is a primary school teacher. We were incredible lucky to escape the ultimate humiliation that night, drawing 2-2. Even so, our dignity took a severe hit. We lost 1-0 to Lithuania in the same campaign, but somehow made the play offs, beating Holland 1-0 at home but losing 6-0 away. 2006 World Cup qualifiers, home defeats to Belarus and Norway ended our chances, even though we drew 1-1 with eventual champions Italy, beat Norway away 2-1 and beat the Slovenians away 3-0

As someone who wasn't even born when Scotland last qualified for a major tournament (before Euro 2021) these last 3 years have been insane with regards to my experience of supporting the national team as this really is our 'golden generation' but not in the way that we have the best of the best in world football. Our highest profile player is a LB and captain of the side, our GK plays for Norwich, our defense is made up of lower end premier league or even championship level players, our midfield though probably our strongest area still doesn't boast the worlds best and the our strike force is an Aussie who plays for QPR and a relegated Southampton striker who scored 5 premier league goals last season. But its a team, a real team something i think we've absolutely lacked in the past of having great players never the right players or a manager who can knit it all together. Steve Clarke, though not my first choice when he got the job, has made us and the players believe in ourselves again in football and for that only good times can come from it.

I wasn't even born when Scotland were last in the Euros. But in these first three years on Earth, I'm very impressed to have witnessed Steve Clarke's approach to managing Scotland. However, I saw the energy levels dwindling during the second half with Spain ... he should feed them rusks at half-time. Works for me!

Clarke's appointment was a bit of a perfect storm. For the first time since probably McLeish's first stint in charge we have a manager that was in touch with the game as it stands, as opposed to being a bit of a has been (McLeish mkII, Burley, and, to some extent, Strachan), combined with some of the best Scottish talent emerging since probably the late 80's/early 90's. BUT the away defeat to Spain, along with the hefty friendly losses to England and France are a reality check to where we're at. Hopefully we can establish ourselves as a top 20 side globally, and on the fringes of the top 10 within UEFA. We ought to be capable of reaching the last 16 in Germany next year, and maybe the QFs with a favourable draw.

I think a big reason the National team isnt as strong or supported here as it could be (even though we still have great numbers) is there are certain people within both of our biggest clubs who dislike the team for different reasons. Certain Rangers fans (not all) view the team as being too Scottish nationalist and dont want to support something that represents independence. On the other hand being brought up a Celtic fan, my Father never really cared about the national team or watched the games with me, to him he had seen the national team in his eyes, disregard too many Celtic players for so called sectarian reasons, and a lot of Celtic fans in the older generations have supported Ireland more. Now this is falling out of fashion and both Club's fans are big into the national team, but its an interesting thing to consider.

England fans in general are more likely to identify their nationality as British rather than English, so generally there is a sense of support for Scotland, Wales and N Ireland from England fans. As an England fan I would happily support one of the other UK teams if England got knocked out, if a team like Scotland went on to win the euros I wouldn’t exactly be partying in the streets for them, but I would be happy for them and would certainly rather see them win it than a country like Slovenia which I have zero connection to. The rivalry from England fans to their UK neighbours has always been more playful and banter based rather than actual hatred. Scotland, Wales and Irish fans do have plenty of fans that genuinely have a serious hatred towards England, but it doesn’t really exist the other way around.

@@ekzxty if you’re idea of “loads of England fans” are men in their 70s who still have resentment for stuff that happened several decades ago then yeah, maybe some will dislike seeing Ireland do well. But those are few and far between compared to virtually all the young and middle aged English people who are far more likely to be either indifferent or quietly supportive of their neighbours. I’ve lived in England all my life and never seen anyone be genuinely hateful towards any of the other nationalities in the UK or Ireland. Playful banter and some fun rivalry sure, but never genuine hatred like you would see from the other sides towards England.
@ekzxty
@ekzxty 11 ай бұрын
@@reecetomm there’s more people in England that have genuine hate for their neighbours more than there is in Scotland, Wales or Ireland. Most Scottish people do not genuinely hate England or English people, in fact they’re likely related with lots of English people. The truth is the people seeking independence do not seek it because they hate England- more so because they’re either deceived by the SNP’s lies or they believe Scotland should be independent from Westminster’s control. Wales are generally indifferent when it comes to England and just like the Scot’s are likely related to lots of English people. Ireland don’t really hate England except the old men stuck on the past. Meanwhile, there are many English people, especially football fans, who will act indifferent while genuinely hating their neighbours whether it be through jealousy or rivalry. Only thing I’d argue with, in an otherwise great doc, is that Scotlands don’t play an attractive style of football ‘by any means’. Couldn’t disagree more. Watch our goals over the few qualifications. Superb football at times, especially through Gilmour/McGregor and down our left side.

I've been said the official anthem for the Scotland 2024 campaign shall be "Just don't Come Home Too Soon"... again. Bad jokes aside, scottish football fans are good people and i wish them and their team all the best.

A finisher in the mould of a Kenny Miller would make the world of difference to Scotland.Dykes and Adams are good honest pro's,but you don't expect them to put the ball in the net every other game in dark blue.

I’m old enough to remember exactly where I was when Scotland opened the World Cup against Brazil in 1998. At the time, it didn’t seem a stretch to say ‘we’ll be back again in 2002’. Then we went into decline. There became this expectation that we’d drop silly points somewhere, usually against a team from the former Soviet Union or Yugoslavia. We were sometimes able to pull off an upset against a superior team (Holland at home 2003, France home and away in 06/07, Croatia home and away in 2013), but that was the best we could do. We regularly finished 3rd, maybe a point or two off the play off spots, which made those silly lost points all the more galling. It’s quite incredible to see us qualify for back to back Euro Championships. Knowing the kind of man Steve Clarke is, he won’t want us to settle for this. He’ll want us winning those final two qualifiers so we’re in the best position to avoid a group of death for the finals. Plus, a win against Georgia in Tbilisi would help banish some old ghosts

Still can't believe McTominays perfectly good wondergoal against Spain was chalked off. 1-0 up with half an hour to go I don't see Spain turning it round. Probably get a draw at worst. The England friendly made us look average but then England just cruised past Italy tonight so nothing to be embarrassed about. Just knocked Haaland and Odegaard out. Playing some great stuff. Things are looking up.

Let's be honest , how many times have Scotland been "robbed" Up until the Italy game where the Scotland player was basically booted off the park and 50000 people saw a free kick for us and ONE man saw it for Italy , just a pity he was the referee ! I had never given credence to conspiracies .THAT night I changed my mind . We had already beaten France home and a way all we needed was a draw which we had . But think about it ....FIFA /UEFA were never going to allow a competition where the WORLD CHAMPIONS were knocked out in qualifying ! I was there that night in the pishing rain I know what I saw ! Both governing bodies are corrupt as fcuk !

Clarke’s time at Reading and WBA was definitely something to speak about. Gave WBA their best finish (8th) since 1981 and took Reading to their first FA Cup final in 88 years. Not sure how you can dismiss that. Also, didn’t really touch the surface of our failings in qualifying. Ok video though

Nah both the Scottish national football team and England team are cursed by fifa tbh. I reckon it goes way back to 1920 when then fifa secretary cornelis hirschmann was outraged by the sfa and fa as they led a mutiny and quit fifa to set up the rival board ifab (still around to this day but it only governs rules now) Fifa were obviously threatened by this and placed a curse on both national sides. And let's face it the sheer amount of bad luck both teams have at international tournaments defies belief. With England it's near constant heartache with penalties or just not winning anything. With Scotland it's getting plagues by injuries and or scandals at tournaments before and after them and never getting out of a group stage ever... At this point it has to be clear something esoteric is the cause. Anyway I say before scotland or England even bother going to another major tournament that curse set down by hirschmann and his 1920s fifa cronies will have to be lifted one way or another😉🤫

I have been surprised at the expressed indifference Sottish football supporters have for international football... They often seem to resent internationals as a disruption of their clubs pursuit of the SPL.. It's like how English football once was like.. Back in the early history of the World cup The English did not take it seriously.. When England had probably the best national team and could have won a few world cups they did not but in any serious effort.. Of course later the English did end up wanting World cup success but by that time other nations had developed good professional players and teams like Brazil Argentina and Germany took turns at holding up the World cup...

thing a lot of people don't understand is scotland and england are for the most part only sport rivals(nowadays), when it comes to sport we get very passionate and patriotic, most of us have absolutely no bad blood for english people but we love the rivalry.
