Trying the Skyfoil kite and more from a generous viewer

Opening a parcel generously sent by John KC0KBG. The main item inside is a kite that I test as a means of supporting a wire for an antenna.

Peter, that's very nice of John KCØKBG to send you those goodies! Some people who've done experimenting with kite antennas advise that corona discharge can occur with very long wires - but we're talking way longer than the wire length you're using, and much higher kite altitudes. I think you need to get the kite well above tree tops. You are trying to operate it in "dirty air"which makes the kite wander all over the place.

It's from Ham Radio magazine November 1975. What's described is not true binaural reception (in the sense of phase differences like Rick Campbell described in a direct conversion receiver published in QST) but is a method that creates an artificial difference with audio filtering. The filters are just straightforward low pass and high pass op amp low and high pass filters filters with 750 Hz cut offs. Standard circuits as per data sheets etc. Two op amps per channel. Horses for courses. The kite is still applicable if you've got no tall metal poles eg you're at a location like a beach. Also the tall metal poles were good for 160m (though I suspect still inferior to a kite supported wire) but for bands like 40 & 80m the kite antenna would likely be superior.
