Billy Boyd, who played Pippin in LOTR and composed/performed The Last Goodbye for these closing credits, said that he also cried when he heard that song at the end. He asked Peter Jackson what he had done to it in post production to make it so moving. Peter answered, "Nothing".

It is canon according to writings of Tolkien that Bilbo's dwarf friends later indeed visited him in the Shire. Also, in the Fellowship of the Ring book, it is mentioned that there were several unnamed dwarves attending Bilbo's 111th birthday party, and they were with him in his plan to leave the Shire.

Just for the interesting lore, when Saruman says "leave Sauron to me" he actually intends to deal with him for the good of Middle Earth. At this point, Saruman is still the white wizard and knows that he is in a unique position to keep tabs on Sauron and make sure he never regains power. For almost 70 years he uses every tool at his disposal to keep track of Mordor and attempt to keep Saurons growing forces at bay, but being in such close proximity is how Sauron starts to corrupt him and eventually warps his mind into joining him. Also, the white jewels that Thranduil wants back from Erebor are basically a gift that was made for his wife by the dwarves, but she was killed before she was ever able to wear them. So beyond being super luxurious, they have a lot of sentimental value to them.

Fun tidbit. Tolkien took quite a bit of inspiration from Norse mythology. In one of the saga's, a dwarf named Fáfnir fell victim to greed over a cursed treasure. So much so that he murdered his father and eventually transformed into a dragon. Its thought by fans of Tolkien that Smaug may have once been a dwarf cursed by greed, but its also thought that at the very least, the "dragon sickness" is inspired by the story of Fáfnir.

I just wish he was given more time to polish out the rough edges. He lost a year of production due to Del Toro dropping out.. then the studio wanted him to turn it into 3 movies instead of just 2... but still kept the original release date. So he had to rebuild everything from the ground up and create a whole other script, having to dig up outside "filler" content in the appendices and Tolkien's notes, along with some new stuff, to make up the run time.

The gold fever (dragon sickness) originally hit Thorin's grandfather because of the magic ring. The rings, when worn, would make humans and hobbits eventually fade into the wraiths we see, but the rings couldn't make dwarves fade like that. Instead they inspired insatiable greed, which is what drove them to ever enlarge their treasuries. Such treasure hoards lure dragons like sharks, since dragons are, by their nature, insatiably greedy. After the dragon took the hoard for its own, Smaug's presence laid a curse-like effect on the gold, to inspire the same greed on all who behold it.

Benedict Cumberbatch not only voiced Smaug & the Necromancer, but also provided the performance capture aspect of the role. The BTS footage from Weta is amazing!! The trilogy is in no ways perfect. Jackson had to salvage a huge amount from what he & Del Toro had worked on prior to the latter departing the production due to ongoing delays to the start of filming. Also, the over reliance on CGI compared to LOTR is at times jarring. That said, the end result dovetails into the LOTR trilogy pretty well. The ending, being the start of Fellowship was an excellent choice. The artwork on the end credits; as with LOTR was done by Alan Lee & John Howe. Both had been hired by Jackson during pre-production on LOTR, but ended up becoming fully fledged members of the production & invaluable, due to their history illustrating various publications of Tolkien’s works.

As others have no doubt said, part of what killed smaug was the fact that the arrow seemingly pierced his heart. Part of what was changed in the movies was that laketown was actually on top of a fairly deep and incredibly cold waters being mostly glacial meltwater. After the arrow hit smaug in the chest he was supposed to have fallen into the water and thrashed around, not being able to muster the strength to get out (possibly with his attempted wing-strokes driving the arrow deeper) which also caused him to drown poetically "extinguishing his fire". The water was almost as much of a threat to him as the arrow itself was, and while the arrow was what made him fall, it was really the water that sealed his fate. The movie dramatizes the effect of the arrow, including it making it way bigger and intended to be used in an artillery piece rather than just an arrow that was special only to bard.

What a refreshing take on this movie. Great reaction! Unlike some of the other Extended versions, the Extended cut for this movie actually improves it (and its still the shortest runtime) with scenes like Thorin's funeral. And it's the only Middle e Earth movie that got an R rating from the MPAA.

Dain was heavily CGI'd because actor Billy Connolly became very ill and was unable to do the necessary reshoots in full costume and prosthetics (he had early stages of both cancer and Parkinson's, though I believe a surgery cured the former), so they had him record lines in the studio and they tweaked Dain's original design to make it more obviously Billy (who is a prolific and well-known actor and comedian in his own right)

@@Edd25164605 What really happends is that the White Council send there troopes to drive out Sauron but nothing says that Galadriel,Elrond or Saruman was fighting. Gandalf and Elrond might have been leading the troopes from behind possibly but it is not known. Legolas was not in the book but he was probably in Mirkwood at the time of the book so its not to far fetched that he could have been in the Thrandils army atleast

My father read this book to me many many times, (and LotR), and my favorite part then and now, (whenever I reread them) was looking up the locations the text references in the many many maps in the prefaces, and researching the family trees in the appendices when a new character is introduced. Books will always be superior to movies because they include the thoughts of the narrator, whereas film can only show a smirk or smile if not a voiceover to express the same. Read the book. It is a children's book, The Hobbit, and an easy read; one of my first, (AND about a hundred years old.. respect!)

The story of Thorin’s Company doesn’t end here. In the books, Balin is killed in Moria after trying to re-establish a dwarven colony there. His tomb is the one we see in the Fellowship of the Ring. Also, Ori (the youngest member) is seen in the Fellowship of the Ring, holding the book that Gandalf reads from in that movie. Third, Óin (the dwarf who uses the cone earpiece) is killed in Moria by the Watcher in the Water (the squid/kraken thing that attacks Frodo in the Fellowship of the Ring). Lastly, Dáin Ironfoot dies about the same time as the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in Return of the King. Again, this just goes to show that the dwarves and their story isn’t done after this series!

The fight between the Nazguls and the white council close to my favorite part of this movie. Also, you may smile at Galadriel insulting Sauron but that is literally how casting magic works in this universe. The insults she throws at Sauron are literally just spells to make Sauron weaker, saying "you have no power here" basically casts an enchant on Sauron that... well weakens his power

I recently went to NZ on an lotr and hobbit tour for 2 weeks back in November. Big bucket list I can cross off. Had a lot of fun and met many different people from around the world. The sights are just breath taking everywhere you look. Met Daniel Reeve and got lots of his maps lol all handmade and he signed them all. Any hardcore lotr and hobbit fans out there I highly recommend looking up red carpet tours you wont be disappointed. Family run business and our guide Julie was the absolute best. Our group was also the first to see some rings of power film locations and they are on the same location where parts of unexpected journey was filmed. I could go on and on with stories. Was really hard to leave such a beautiful country. Thank you New Zealand.

The actin of Martin Freeman wuz SO on point, Benedict Cumberbatch made a darn good job as the greedy and poison speakin fire lizard and yeah it made me warmth up with Legolas more, cause he seemed much less round edged and more adult than in lotr to me (yeah 'fcourse Bloom got older so the figure looks diferent but meant more the way he acts and speaks). Totally enjoyed yar reactions, laughters and tearin-ups here and be sure I'll join on patreon to watch it uncut 😁👌✨
