In Joel's defense, _nobody_ is quite sure how a siphon works. (The longstanding assumption was that the difference in atmospheric pressure kept the liquid flowing, but siphons have been proven to work in a vacuum too.) Also, mad props to Joel for making it up to the 33rd floor. I'm not quite his age yet and I'd have *died* somewhere in the teens.
@Galiant2010 Жыл бұрын
That's not true. The liquid itself is the atmosphere, so to speak. It pulls itself through the tube because if it didn't keep pulling more it'd just leave a cavity of nothing at the end of the tube beneath the liquid. But gravity pulls the rest of the liquid down. And liquids always flow to the lowest point, so as long as the end point for a siphon is lower than the bottom of what you're siphoning from it'll keep pulling itself. You'd need to at least also have no gravity to be unable to siphon.

One thing that i like of the show is the fact that you could see both sides of the situations. There are no agressors in the apocalipsis, there are no good or bad people in the last of us, there are only survivors and dead people. And that also happen in the game
@afqwa423 Жыл бұрын
That is a false equivocation. The QZ survivors are definitely in the wrong. They ambushed Joel and Ellie first, probably with the intent to take their things if they could. Their leader doesn't warn nor lead her community away from the burrowing Cordyceps infestation under their feet because she knows doing that would divert resources from her manhunt. She probably is aware of her son's banditry as well and decides to rope Ellie and Joel into her own internal politics anyway by making them additional targets for a manhunt. (I don't know whether it's out of a selfish desire to get revenge against them specifically or as a means to an end to get the other guy.) She is a tyrant and her people are bandits. Just because I understand their reasons doesn't make their reasons excuses. Joel and Ellie are 100% in the right here and were morally right to defend themselves. She also probably shot their only doctor and only considered sparing him because he _might_ be immediately useful. She's a Karen. And I empathize with Karens myself. I can really see it from their angle because I also remember what it was like to be a spoilt child who threw fits when they were denied a toy. I can put myself in other people's shoes just fine. But it doesn't make me _like_ them. If you had any real empathy for her, then that empathy should engender contempt and a desire to be a better person than her. She's absolutely 100% a terrible person.
@TerryYelmene Жыл бұрын
Bella as 'Ellie' and Pedro as 'Joel' are... special.... perfect.
@nezfromhki Жыл бұрын
Another note, I like the small moment where Ellie asks Joel "they're not FEDRA, they're not Fireflies, so who are they?" and Joel simply responds "People." It works in two ways: first of all to simply convey that Joel does not know nor care who they are, but it also highlights the idea that no matter what kind of labels you want to stick on your enemies, they're still people at the end of the day. I appreciate the lengths the show is going to humanize the "enemy."
@afqwa423 Жыл бұрын
I kind of interpreted it negatively. People are still capable of banditry when it comes down to it. Joel has echoed this sentiment in the past episode and during the camping out. Infected don't come far out, but people could. I suppose that seems edgy, but "evil" as we understand it isn't some unique nor isolated cosmic incident. It's a banality of evil type of statement.
@kylecasey7010 Жыл бұрын
I think you got the same message I did. Joel admitting to doing exactly what Bryan did was enough to convince me that it wasn’t about good and bad but people trying to survive.
@afqwa423 Жыл бұрын
@@kylecasey7010 No, I'm saying people are indeed good or bad and that you can critique their behavior. You need to detach the concept of virtue from the harm of their actions. So when I say somebody is bad, I don't mean to say they're _innately_ bad, but my judgment I have of them is still there. And it is often to unrealistic to assume people will simply reform if you think of the right thing to say or reason with them. You should not mistake niceness for goodness. Do not allow charisma nor how much you like a person to sway your judgments or your critical thought. Being able to have a beer with, let's say, a fascist doesn't mean we are not political enemies even if he's nice to his family and friends in isolation of those political goals. Do not allow the desire to be civil to lead you to ignore other warning signs. The QZ leader in particular is just a bandit leader or warlord. She never thought of herself as such but the next episode confirms my initial low opinion of her. She's the villain of the story. She's just a change in management from the KC FEDRA regime. She's a vindicative Karen with too much power. And that here is the point. She always had it in her to be just as evil and to tread the same path as her former oppressors. People like her are a dime-a-dozen. They talk about justice but their actions and speech show they're only interested in power. I know her _reasons_ they just aren't very good reasons. And there actually does seem to be a very political message with her character. She _offers_ no real reform or better government than the previous regime. She uses he clout to basically chase Moby Dick instead of taking whichever actions were best for the QZ survivors. She ignored that her son was a bandit and that Joel was 100% morally in the right to kill him. She ignored that Henry wasn't an important priority, the Infected were. She kills former collaborators rather than offering a world where such collaboration is unnecessary. Where was her empathy to them? Rewatch the scene where she executes the doctor -- notice how impulsive and bratty she is about it. She never had good reasons to kill him. Empathy doesn't mean you need show her compassion. To the contrary, if you had any empathy, you would feel disgust at her actions. Your empathy should only relate to her because you remember what it was like to be a spoilt brat who was denied ice cream and be glad that you do not have to repeat her mistakes. She was no ruler nor statesman. And it was clear that while her brother didn't get "results," he would've been an infinitely better leader. On her account, all the KC survivors died. She's a bad person. They didn't die due to a strategic miscalculation. She said it herself, it was only ever about revenge. Her bodyguard was a stupid fool to have followed her.

Then when he answered the Scare Crow joke. Joel is an 'honorable man' - as best as he can be. After their talk about 'killing/hurting people' - he realized that he can't do this by himself as he almost died because of it. Also - he feels responsible for El having to do so. That was the bonding moment; everything after is just 'how much.' "We'll get through this." Then when she's climbing into the window: "Look around first. Ellie Godammit!" "I've been on both sides. We did what we needed to survive.' El: "Did you kill innocent people." He's not ready to confess to her. He calls her "little shit." He says: "Good night" to her. Then he asks her about 'hurting people.' He's ready to talk with her about it and we see it. He's also ready to try his best to help her cope with such an awful thing. Then the diarrhea joke!

That business about killing innocent people in order to survive was bullshit on Joel's part trying to avoid the reality of what he's done and who he's become. In fact, when traveling from Texas to Boston he, Tess, Tommy and the group they were with became raiders, robbing and murdering anyone they came across. it's the reason Tommy left Joel for the Fireflies and then when he left the Fireflies he didn't try to return to Joel. In the game he tells Joel that he still has nightmares about what they've done. here he reminds Joel that they weren't just "things" they did, they murdered people. Murder is a very different thing then saying they killed people. It means that there was no excuse like survival, Tommy says there were other ways, they just weren't any good at them. Killing people was easier. people are scared to death of Joel in places like Boston. That's not just because he's a tough guy, that world is full of tough guys. he has a rep as a sadistic, remorseless killer. When we see how he interrogates people what should be apparent is that this is something he's done many times. He doesn't do what he does just because it's about Ellie. This is who he is. This is the monster inside that Craig Mazin points out is not only inside Joel but in Ellie as well. It's something they share and what drew Ellie to him from the moment he beat that FEDRA soldier to death in front of her. When Sarah saw him kill Nana Adler she was horrified and cried. When Ellie saw him kill someone in front of her, she was as Craig said, activated. She was turned on.

I love it in the game, but here I was distracted how line for line it was the same, to the point that I couldn't help but to unconsciously compare it to the original line deliveries. And while I can't honestly say which one was better, to me the scene from the game will always be "the better one." It made me realize how much I appreciate the changes the show has or even completely new scenes, like the ones about coffee or the diarrhea joke towards the end.
