As Ellie said, Joel doesn't hear very well with his right ear. In that last scene, we can see that he's sleeping with his left ear down on the cushion and his right ear - the bad one - facing up, meaning that, in that moment, there was a pretty good chance of someone approaching them without Joel being able to hear it. Just a nice little detail.

As soon as I saw her pull out *THE* joke book I actually threw my fists sky high. And I’m so glad that they added the diarrhea joke because I was afraid they would *run* out of ideas. But seriously, this show is so insanely faithful to the game that it doesn’t feel like a show but almost like and expansion pass/extended cut of the game. Even though I do miss the scene of Joel teaching Ellie how to use a rifle and then saying “No matter what happens, you make every show count” I still love him teaching her how to use the pistol because a) it shows the bond between these two growing and b) it tells the audience that Ellie had some training from FEDRA so her learning quickly feels natural. And now we are getting to see the more human side of the people who were trying to kill Joel and Ellie in Kansas City (instead of Pittsburgh like in the game). Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin said their inspiration came from how throughout history there have been cases where the revolution that usurps a repressive regime becomes just as bad if not worse than the previous regime. Also loved that we got to see Jeffery Pierce (aka Tommy from the games) finally show up in the show as Perry, Kathleen’s right hand man!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Hey, Magy! The Hank Williams song, the sticky magazine, the pun book are all from the game. In the game, the setting of this segment is Pittsburgh rather than Kansas City but Ellie saving Joel enabling him to trust her is the key milestone. The second key milestone is meeting Henry and Sam. Jeffrey Pierce, who plays bearded Perry, portrayed Tommy in both video games. Melanie Lynskey, who plays Kathleen, is a new character original to the show. John Getz, who plays Dr. Edelstein, is a veteran character actor from shows like "Timeless" and "Bosch" but is best known for the movies "Blood Simple" and "The Fly". The undulating floor implies something big underneath which is likely a spore-spewing bloater! The ambivalence you're meant to feel about Melanie Lynskey is something of a motif in the games which might be helpful to recall the further you proceed. Every altercation involves two people with their own back story. There's a story on each side of the gun. Joel has implied with silence that he has killed innocent people yet he is the protagonist because he's our POV character into the story. If Kathleen were the POV character, Joel would just be the guy who killed Brian. Something to chew on.

I cringed when I saw Ellie in front of the mirror with the pistol, as she explains later she was taught by FEDRA military school, and I saw a serious problem with her form. Your finger should never enter the trigger well unless you expet to be firing. looking to see how badass you look in a mirror is a zero need to enter the trigger well. The fact she didn't unload and clear the gun prior to playing with it in front of the mirror as well. For remnants of government trained firearms proficient personnel, they don't teach essentials which can keep you from accidentally killing half the team you're with before an enemy fires a shot. I didn't catch this until watching your reaction, and it's not something you mentioned. But remember in episode 2 after the dead body in the water 'jump scare' in the hotel, when Joel helped Ellie up? As soon as she was on her feet they both abruptly pulled their hands back and Joel glanced at his hand (it was the arm she was bitten on) After she tells him to get up, he takes her hand (same hand) to help him up, and neither of them pull away from each other after. Small detail, but it's in there.

So, what I did, before watching the show, was, I watched the TLOU Part1 play thru on KZbin, so I'd have a good idea of what to expect with the story-line, and when the show would deviate from the game. Although I loved Ep 3, it was kind of a detour from the game. This episode was pure game, a huge treat for fans who played it. From dealing with blocked doors and shooting over disabled vehicles, right up to Ellie’s puns, it was an incredibly fun tribute.

I am NOT a gamer but I own a PS4 for just these 2 TLOU games, and though I have watched a lot of game play with my daughter and her friends growing up and also here on KZbin, this is the only game I know of that was created in such a way that you can tell Naughty Dog intended the player to feel remorse for killing many of the 'bad guys'. Many of the walkthroughs I prefer watching really don't like killing those they don't have to, especially the dogs. Most other games don't make you feel anything when you go on a killing spree. Kudos to Neil Druckmann and the others at Naughty Dog for that! SPOILER ALERT!!! DON'T READ BEYOND THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW THE WHOLE STORY FROM THE GAMES! Another thing they changed from the game is when Ellie tells Dina who was her first kill, it was the hunter that was about to kill Joel, but in this version she says that wasn't her first. The sad part is that I think we're going to find out her first kill was Riley after she finally turned. I could be wrong, but she was only bitten 3 weeks before she met Joel and Tess so to fit in this time frame that doesn't leave many people that she could have shot. Really heartbreaking if you think about it. This part is not so much a spoiler but in the game version Ellie was reading a comic book in the back seat when she complained about the comic book she was reading was a 'To be continued' leaving it at a 'clif-hanger'. So what did the people at Naughty Dog and HBO do to us? Leave this episode off at a 'CLIF-HANGER!!!'

The Last of Us - giving us the most romantic thing we’ve ever seen on tv during a zombie apocalypse, and using diarrhea jokes to advance character relationships. And we can’t get enough.

Kathleen's bearded right-hand is Tommy's voice actor in the game. As I understand it, Henry is responsible for Kathleen's brother death by betrayal. I guess he betrayed them because Fedra threatened Sam. I think Kathleen's brother was the leader of the resistance movement and she was probably the mom of the troops. That's the only reason I can imagine why the group follows her at all, so insecure and focused on revenge she seems. The bottom line is that she has absolutely understandable reasons. Just as good reasons as anyone else on the show and Joel wouldn't do anything else. Shows again that no group is good or bad. Joel's poor hearing has been shown throughout the episode. He always sleeps on the right side and Ellie often had to repeat when she called Joel. In the end, he slept on his good ear, so he didn't hear Henry and Sam. The only criticism so far is really the lack of brutality shown by Joel, because that is very important. Firstly, Joel was brutal and ruthless and secondly it's important for the second season. I think it is a mistake not to show this in all its brutality. The show still has to improve and I hope it will be later. It just has to. Btw... I still believe that Ellie pocketed the two grenades that fell at her feet when Tess had her heroic death. I think the bloater will get to eat them.
