Hey guys!!
This time we threw it back to Gladiator from 9th grade history class! LOL for some reason everyone I know who had gone to high school in the US has seen parts of if not the entirety of Gladiator in class and I remember just seeing a fighting scene so this isn't really a rewatch!! I liked Gladiator a lot, it was a tear jerker, it was written wonderfully and I LOVED the twisting and turning plot. I hope you guys feel the same!! Thank you so much and Episode 8 comin RIGHT UP ❤❤

@@B355Y Including that butchered german attempt that the english actor playing the enemy general makes. He says, quite famously in german "You are cursed dogs!" (Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde). But because obviously no one made sure that his phonetical reading of his lines were correct he uses the incorrect english pronouciation rules and out comes: "Ihr sied verfluchte Hunde." Screamed at the top of his lungs it couldn't be more obvious to anyone who speaks german, that this guy isn't one. ;)

Also the real Marcus Aurelius was a fascinating person. His book "Meditations" was never intended to be published. It was basically his notes to self about how to be a just and virtuous emperor. Morality was extremely important to him and he made a point of incorporating moral philosophy into every aspect of his life. He believed that there is no difference in morality or wisdom between an emperor and a slave and he lived accordingly. He is one of the only exceptions to the maxim that absolute power corrupts absolutely who has ever lived. It's sad that his son was such a brat.

HIs last line, "shadows and dust," just before he is killed, was actually an outtake from when he said it earlier in the movie. He had said the line, and said it again subdued, almost under his breath. Ridley Scott took that footage, touched it up digitally to match the location for his death. I also remember the first time watching Gladiator, wondering why the hell he scared me, and made me uneasy. I couldn't figure it out for a long time. Then I was watching Oliver Twist again, and I remembered that he terrified me when I was a kid when I watched Oliver Twist.

"Sometimes the frost makes the blade stick." This is my favorite historical line in cinema. Praetorian guards (The soldiers guarding the emperor, like the secret servic, were elite soldiers, but with limited field and combat experience). That word of advice he gives the soldier before killing him is advice even the lowest soldier in the ranks in that campaign wouldn't need. They would know.....the frost on the blade would make it stick to the sheath, so best to at least prep it for utilization beforehand (like drawing it before intended use). He is challenging the soldier with a direct call to his lack of skill and expertise in true combat.............

Gladiators were usually on the plumpy side so to speak - because they had so much fat, the possible cut wounds were not so dangerous, but still bled a lot to give the audience what they wanted. What I love about the Colosseum Carthage recreation, is that you can see how Maximus ended up in his position in the military, without an origin story. None of those people are soldiers (except for one), and they’d all be killed, but because he’s able to keep it together and guide them efficiently, they end up forming a warband and win. Gives more weight to the adage, “I don’t fear an army of lions led by a sheep, but an army of sheep led by one lion”.

There was a lot of improvising when "Gladiator" was made. From Crowe's "At my word, unleash Hell," Harris's "your faults as a son are my failures as a father," the later scenes of Proximo and the final scene of the movie. (Oliver Reed died in the middle of the film). In all honesty, Gladiator was shambles to make but resulted with a brilliant movie (the non-extended version anyway,). A bit like "Team America: World Police," although I doubt that any-one would pair the two films.

After watching it, I think this movie is also heavily based on "The Fall of the Roman Empire", a movie from 1964 that hits a lot of the same plot beats. There's Marcus Aurelius, a faithful general he wishes to pass the throne to, Commodus assassinating him to get it for himself instead, and while the general doesn't become a gladiator, at the very end the movie is resolved the same way: a one-on-one gladiatorial combat between him and Commodus. It's actually a really amazing fight scene. At the end of it, the general could get the throne, but ends up leaving and retiring on his own as he's disgusted by the corruption in Rome, where the senators start fighting over the scraps of power they can get. The movie's title comes from the implication that Commodus' reign marked the beginning of unstoppable decline for the Empire.

Derek Jacobi, who played the senator who allied with Maximus, starred in what is widely considered to be one of the best tv miniseries ever, “I, Claudius,” where he played the Roman emperor Claudius. It’s from the mid-‘70s, so it is very old school and done on the cheap, with all studio sets and rather cheesy music. However, the writing and especially the acting is top-notch! It’s filled with actors who are at the beginning of their careers-Jacobi, John Hurt as Caligula, Patrick Stewart (with a hairpiece) as the evil henchman, John Rhys-Davies as another evil henchman, and the terrific BRIAN BLESSED (whose name should always be in all-caps, like the man himself). And then there is Sian Phillips as the amazing Livia, a character so iconic that the creator of The Sopranos named Tony’s mom after her.

And on another note - gladiators were entertainers. Most gladiator movies/shows don't bother getting into the specifics, but trained gladiators were specialists. They used very standardized equipment and fought in a particular style. The net/trident guys would be paired against a guy wearing a full helmet with small eye holes set just far enough apart that the tines of the trident could not fit through 2 holes at once, thereby ensuring that the helmet guy couldn't be killed by a thrust to the face. Gladatorial bouts were published in advance, so people could bet on them, and just like in modern horse racing, they'd have published stats on individual gladiators. So everyone knew each gladiator's track record. Most injuries weren't fatal (because the purpose is to entertain the crown, not to kill an opponent). That's why the crowd got to vote on whether to kill a defeated gladiator. They'd typically give a newbie a break and spare his life. But if a gladiator kept putting on a shitty show, they'd get tired of him wasting everyone's time and just vote to off the guy. If you put on a really good show, fame and fortune, including freedom, could be yours. The fame and fortune part is why even some free men fought as gladiators. Desperate times and all that. And then there were the gladiatorial bouts that were all about executing criminals. Those were just straight-up slaughter-fests. Beheading or crucifying is fine and all, but watching some poor sod get mauled by a tiger is a lot more "fun". But if you managed to kill your tiger with the pocket knife they gave you, obviously the gods favor you, so you'd likely be pardoned. Or die later of your wounds.

Her: Is that his sister or his wife? Commodus: Yes. Also, you were shown this in history class? I mean... It's a great movie, and it does do a god job of showing and contextualizing certain aspects of ancient Roman culture, but the events and characters are far from historically accurate. It was possible for gladiators to win their freedom, though it wasn't as if they could earn it as a prize by winning a certain fight. Basically a gladiator could earn his freedom by earning enough of a profit to buy his freedom. You have to remember that slavery was incredibly common in this time. Chances were that if you didn't own a slave that meant you were a slave, or at the very least poor. The slaver/gladiator school-owner played by Laurence Olivier would not have been considered a terrible person for dealing in slaves at the time, not even by Maximus, who, judging by the size of his farm/estate, was a prosperous land-owner. He would've owned many slaves himself.

@@tehdipstick Maybe maybe not the golden age of labour slavery was in the waning days of the republic. Gladiator has awesome production design with beautiful and gritty attention to detail, but historically it’s kind of a joke. Literally nothing in this movie happened except for Commodus fighting as a gladiator. Maximus wasn’t a real person, Marcus Aurelius was not killed by Commodus and he explicitly declared Commodus as his successor, even co-ruling with him in the years leading to his death. Lucilla and Commodus never married and Rome never returned to its Republican origin.

@@eatsmylifeYT There’s a difference between being a pedantically historically accurate movie and being a work of total fiction where nothing in it actually happened. It coopt the veneer of History to give itself legitimacy. You think you’re watching a story about a certain time in history, reflecting reality in some way, but it’s actually complete and total fiction, and directly counter to what we understand of history’s overarching themes. Look at HBO’s Rome. It’s a very entertaining show, yet it still works as a mostly faithful account of the fall of the republic. Gladiator is just... a pure lie. You should see "Spartacus" - the movie AND the show. And you should see HBO's "Rome" "Gladiator" was heavily fictionalized, Maximus was not a real guy. (Commodus was a real emperor and he was almost as bad as portrayed, but was not killed in the ring. The conspiracy got his training partner to strangle him in his bath) Spartacus was the real Gladiator who escaped and lead a slave revolt that destabilized The Republic. "Rome" is the story of how, a few decades after the slave revolt, The Caesars seized power from The Republic and declared Rome an Empire.

Gladiator matches usually weren't quite as deadly as shown here. Many died, but the life of a fighting capable person was generally considered worth more than just a single match, and people in the crowds loved seeing people come back and do better than they had before. There were even semi-choreographed historical battle reenactments (which is what the fight with the chariots was) with predetermined winning and losing sides. It was kind of like professional wrestling taken to its most imaginable extreme. The most famous gladiators would literally get paid by establishments for their endorsements, which would be featured on proto Billboards (they though about including a bit of that in this movie but thought general audiences wouldn't believe it).
