Vladimir Horowitz interview (en français / in French with English subtitles) - Paris 24 octobre 1985

I've done my best to provide English subtitles (click the "CC" icon at the bottom of the screen).
Horowitz occasionally slurs through words and phrases when speaking French. There are a few instances when I did not understand what he said, and so simply inserted [?].
If anyone can assist in translating those mysterious phrases, please provide details in Comments and I'll edit the subtitles to include them.

Horowitz was a modest, even humble person given his extraordinary pianistic capabilities and charisma. In other words he never liked to grandly present himself to interviewers, after all his unique playing said everything about this remarkable human being.

Filling in some missing English captions and correcting one where VH was misheard: @1:24 … Success for a pianist is when there is no coughing, when the audience is listening. @3:13 But a slow piece, on a percussion instrument, is difficult to make sing. @6:13 … was tried out, as we say,… @7:55 But I wasn’t born 34 years ago!

Who is the interviewer?

I don't know. I pulled this off the air in October 1985 from a channel representing an international consortium of French-language broadcasters from around the world. Most of the content came from France. I didn't record the entire program, and so don't have access to the credits. Sorry ...

Pour ce qui concerne Cortot, il y a des zones d'ombres et de lumière, la vérité est plus nuancée que « c'était un nazi". D'autre part, j'ai en tête l'interprétation de la première ballade de Chopin par Horowitz, on croit entendre à chaque seconde les commentaires de l'édition de travail de Cortot, si on ajoute à cela que Cortot était un élève de Diemer... la réflexion qui dit qu'il ne pouvait pas jouer les études de Chopin parce qu'il n'avait pas de technique est ridicule d'autant que ce n'est pas le recueil le plus redoutable techniquement, l'opus 10 et l'opus 25 sont des chef-d'œuvres absolus et l'exercice narcissique de vouloir jouer l'intégrale est fort vain. Quand à ceux qui pensent qu'il y avait un gentil pépé Horowitz rigolo qu'ils aillent se documenter un peu en lisant la biographie de Glenn Plaskin...

Oui, il assassine Cortot en le traitant de pianiste nazi sans technique, mais perfidement il commence par dire qu'il était bon chef d'orchestre. Il y a visiblement de la haine et de la rivalité là dedans. Cortot faisait pas mal de fausses notes, certes, mais il ne faut pas oublier que, contrairement à Horowitz, il enseignait énormément. Et il a laissé des enregistrements magnifiques, d'une incomparable poésie, notamment de Schumann. Je ne crois pas qu'il y ait beaucoup de grands pianistes qui soient véritablement gentils.
