“He’s been literally the greatest gift to NATO since the end of the Cold War, how ironic that is.”
Vladimir Putin has caused damage to the Russian Federation, but not enough for him to leave Ukraine, says General David Patraeus.

The cunning Biden has built up Ukraine's armaments step by step, but we're at the final stage, with long-range missiles and F16 aircraft far superior to Russian migs. The Russian navy was driven out of the western Black Sea by the Ukraine, which has no navy - a feat that will go down in history. Putin knows nothing about war, it's the trap of the dictator who thinks he's a genius because he has power. Democracies are talkative, but far more effective than dictatorships; free criticism allows mistakes to be corrected quickly. And Biden the GREAT is making a flawless job of it: the crescendo of arms deliveries to the Ukraine will go down in history as a model of finesse, with Biden pretending to refuse the deliveries every time. The Ukrainians now have an armada that will enable them to destroy the rest of the Russian navy and air force. If Russian migs fire from the Black Sea, they'll be shot down - they're not on Russian territory .... . Yes, the end of Putin is now very near. The spectacular destruction of the Crimean bridge will be the signal for the end of Putin, who will have his greatest tantrum.

Truth is most of us wanted the Russian people to flourish and do well after some 70 years of utter oppression and in particular those who experienced the tyranni of Stalinism. We really did want them to have individual freedom and we wished for them to prosper. Norway share borders with Russia and so yeah…the Russian people are our neighbour. Very much so…for millenniums and in good times as well as in bad ones we wish them well. Putin however…not so much.

This is true. Ruzzia was still so paranoid after the Cold War that it refused to allow Western investment during “privatization.” So the people in Ruzzia with resources and connections-the KGB officers, high ranking military officers, high ranking Commies, and the mafia were able to buy up all the assets and consolidate their power. Ruzzia also refused Western assistance to design regulations to limit this sort of corruption (which will always happen, but got to absurd levels in Ruzzia). Then, when Ruzzia did open up to Western investment after those initial few years, experienced Western businessmen were able to run rings around the Ruzzians, who had no real private business experience. And Ruzzia had no legal mechanism to control this because it had refused help in designing regulations. But of course, Ruzzians only remember the second part where businessmen got rich off them, and totally blocked out the first part where they refused assistance and handed their country over to control by the mafia, which basically remains in charge today, except now it’s called the Putin regime. And of course Putin has invented/encouraged the narrative that this was all a plot by “the West” and not just Ruzzia’s own intransigence and incompetence.

I’ve often commented on You Tube that desire for a weak Russia was never desirable in America. Most of us were always pulling for the Russian people and excited for how modern and beautiful the main cities had become. Traveling there was on the bucket list of all my friends. The collapse of Russia and the mistakes of Putin are not a source of joy here, but rather a source of great disappointment and disbelief at the reversal of all the good that was accomplished over the last couple of decades

Are they? When are you going to wake up and understand the reality? The Ukrainian people are just the victims here. Their government is in the hands of corrupt criminals and Nazis. Ukraine failed to honour three sequential peace treaties they signed with Russia which would have avoided all this. They have lost 500,000 men fighting a proxy war for the USA who want to break up Russia. It hasn't happened. Zelensky (on whom check the Pandora papers) has tens of millions stashed in bank accounts and homes all over the world.Where did they come from? Servant of the People? It's not even funny. They are finished, Ukraine is finished. Anybody who funds this is a fool.

I was about to get the coffee in the vrong throat when I heard that Sweden was seaking membership in NATO , and especially under a social democratic government. I live in Denmark but my parents were Swedish and I grow up as a Swede.Sweden only ca 5 to 10 years ago held a conference about their 200 year old neutrality and how it had kept Sweden out of war.
@andersgrassman6583
@andersgrassman6583 7 ай бұрын
Swedish neutrality has been the official dogma publicly communicated. The truth though has been that Swedish and USA military intelligence have been in close cooperation ever since WWII, with Sweden even running spy airbourne operations into the USSR. It even became written doctrine in Sweden to rely on USA's nuclear deterrence in the 1960's, although it was never communicated to the public. When I attended technical college in the early 1980's, I did my programming exercises on an export restricted American super computer, of which there were only four in the entire of Europe, because one department was - and had done so for years - designing the propellars for the US strategic nuclear submarines. It's doesn't get any more secret! I perfectly understand the Americans both getting annoyed and puzzled by the double standards enacted by the then governing Social Democrat government towards the USA and the Vietnam war. Primeminister Palme was publicly ranting against the USA, while military cooperation was at the same time very trusting. The majority of Swedish people haven't had a pressing reason to seriously think about NATO membership before the Ukraine invasion. When people actually thought about it, they quickly came to the only sensible conclusion. I seriously doubt the Russian's ever considered Sweden neutral. Personally I'm very happy the ludicrous charade is finally over, also for the general public. I'm 60 and the situation has been perfectly clear to me since I was a teenager, reading and speaking with politicians and military. Politicians and the military even overtly moved to an "almost member" situation already around 2000, with all major weapons systems beeing integrated or compatible with NATO standards. Also having joint excercises. And Sweden actually beeing a very active "observer" at NATO headquarters.

It's not just NATO that's benefitting from Putin's mistake, the EU is also benefitting with more support among its members and serious talks of reforms and expansion, basically, safety in numbers is helping EU countries and all it took was a threat from the outside. But the EU and NATO are not the only ones benefitting from this, we are all benefitting, because now there's a big push on renewable energy in the 3 major markets, the EU, US and China, that's going to benefit us all in the long run by making renewable energy cheaper and better, the only ones losing out here is Russia and the fossil industry and it might not seem like it at the moment, but with the big push away from the fossil industry, it's going to put downwards pressure on the price until it eventually squeezes them out. China if they are not careful could be another major loser in all this if they back Russia too much, especially as the EU and US among others are pushing hard to diversify away from China and China is making it easy for these countries to do so as long as China continues to support Russia and if they continue with hostile actions around the world like on Taiwan. It's going to be really interesting to see what the next 10 years look like, and I suspect EU and US relations could get much closer, especially with the rise of China.

@ryanharriss, your comment is very much to the point. thanks very much for bringing it up. warriors differ from peacemakers in their abilities and attitudes toward conflict, but too often we discount the effect on the people who suffer the consequences of their decisions. we need a strong military which must refrain from hubris. this is a fine line, easily crossed. at times these men go too far in their self congratulations. i dont mean to discount their expertese, we need people with a strong sense of conscience to make these decisions, but it is borderline offensive to hear them chuckle at their own little jokes. we need men like them, its clear they care about the consequences when policy mistakes are made. bottom line after all, it is a book review, but a bit too chummy for me given the seriousness of the subject.

My certain view is that Ukraine will reach Tokamak before the end of the year, and then be able to disrupt the land bridge to Crimea. Having already severally degraded Russian assets in Crimea, this will be significant, and lead to Ukraine kicking Russia out off Crimea.

Considering the UK is literally a fraction of the size of the EU, that is hardly surprising. The UK's significant role has been in establishing precedent. In terms of training and preparation of Ukrainian forces, pre-invasion. Then providing anti-tank weapons. Then being the first to provide Western main battle tanks, which overcame Western reticence. Most recently, the provision of Storm Shadow long range missiles, which led to Germany and the US following suit. Without these strategic firsts, the US and other NATO members would still be prevaricating about escalation. Where would Ukrainian forces be today, without the UK?

The destruction of a designated enemy state cannot be the purpose of a defensive alliance, by definition. It can be the purpose of an aggressive, offensive alliance. The only way Putin and his mistakes are a "gift" to NATO is if NATO's objective is the destruction of Russia, and all it needs is an excuse. So... If this is indeed the prevalent sentiment in the NATO countries, then in some twisted double-triple-cross-hypocricy-over-hypocricy way, Putin is right and Russia needs to defend itself from NATO, and NATO is also right and needs to find a way to destroy Russia or be destroyed. If NATO is not really defensive, and if Russia is really the arch-enemy of the US-led NATO, then everything that happens makes perfect sense. The proxy wars, the lies, the propaganda, the shills, videos like this, the constant accusations and political maneuvering and angling and re-interpretation and omission, from all sides.... Now I'm bored, what's next.

You forgot Ukr leaders are (at least have been before the war) corrupt. Yes, about NATO: in history even naz*s defended their barbrossa (after war) by showing ussr massed attack tanks near their borders - so "offence was the best defense", one will have your powerbase intact while enemy's area is affected by warfare. Very odd war, two not so developed countries (usa and rus) against eachother. One thing I don't especially like is (as seen in ATACMS) usa calculates its support like: (should dismantle old bradleys/ATACMS they're end of their usable lifetime, dismantling costs etc etc) - let's give Ukr bradleys, buy new equipment from own countrys companies and put the price tag of a bradley to the new IFV that's replacing almost useless (in NATO defence) bradleys. And say "we gave that much military dollars". Meanwhile EU gives money and Ukr just points that money to what they want to buy/upkeep. I guess it's kind of american thing, suits your, sir, suit suits you :P This odd kinda proxy war's pretty nasty but I do hope, despite all the history that Ukr would get back the areas they had before 2014 (krim also) and peace as fast as possible. Heavy military action (jets to Ukr, Rus mobilization) is going to happen after Putin is re-elected again to be Khan (best exit strategy for Rus as nation would be Putin slipping out of a window imo though). Keep on pushing, nobody wants a frozen conflict. Ukr has shot mines with arty (so no fast advance anyhow), and the area east [civilians/population] is now Rus-positive so Ukr can't have so good data from civilians what/where to attack any more, so slow advance may be strategic decision usa just don't get. Bit like thunder runs until they succeeded.

The price for arrogance is high. 5 months after Ukraine's much-vaunted counteroffensive, which produced minimal territorial gains despite the enormous cost of men and equipment, support for Kyiv is clearly waning. Frustration stems from the growing economic burden of the war and ongoing corruption scandals in Ukraine. But the situation is aggravated by a negative reaction to the excessive self-confidence and arrogance of the Western, especially American, foreign policy establishment.

I’m very disturbed over Patreaus’ cavalier attitude towards America’s financial contribution towards funding the Ukrainian conflict with Russia. While Patreaus skims over American lackluster battlefield accomplishments since WW2. Korea was a draw. Vietnam was a colossal goatf**k. Panama was unnecessary. The 2nd Iraq incursion turned into another disaster. Afghanistan was a ten year waste of time, materials and human lives. And not even a year since running from Afghanistan leaving over $200 billion of working military equipment behind, the US military-industrial complex is already planning on spending more in Ukraine. The US is over $33 trillion in debt. Roughly $0.48 of every tax dollar goes to debt interest payments. And Patreaus is ready to commit the US to another undefined military engagement. Hasn’t provided a single clue what military success will look like in Ukraine. Not a clue about the financial commitment AFTER the war will be to get Ukraine back on its feet. And finally, not the least concerned how the current inept Presidential Administration has managed to unite Russia, China, Iran and North Korea for the first time in history. No, the US needs to stop being the world’s policeman.
