id watch joo sae hyuk gionnis lacks the forhand chop in his game you can see he loses many point from being too agressive with his forehand or just being to predictable with the forehand, he hits into the net or too high and gets a smash he cant defend, playing safer is usually better for defenders especially at amatuer league like me, obviously it higher levels you need to take risks but I feel like Joo's playstyle is one to strive for gionnis is a bit of an odity
@rayc79144 ай бұрын
@@bryanwells4063 yeah I agree, he is predictable. I think Gionis lacks aggressive forehand loop fundamentals as well. When he attacks with his forehand he seems to want to guarantee the ball over the net so he spins it into a high arc, but the lack of forward momentum (which brings risk as you said) means he is always vulnerable to counters or balance shifting. The Chinese are able to have their forehand loops at a fast pace so that the opponent has less time to react while also generating enough topspin to get the ball over the net, and Gionis is unable to do that which is quite a large hole in his technique

Wow! I haven't seen Samsonov lose to a chopper in ages! Amazing game (plus some luck) by Gionis
@qazwsxa10298 жыл бұрын
+Green Light Transport A LITTLE luck, Gionis didn't win the match by coin flip. However, he won the first set on a net at 11-7, and got an un-returnable net and an edge ball in the third, which he won 11-8. The last two sets were deuces. This 4-1 isn't the same as Ma Long's decisive 4-1 victory over Samsonov in the German Open this year, at least 3 of the sets Gionis won could have gone either way with a lucky ball or two for Samsonov.

Wonderful , beautiful table tennis on the highest level with one of the most elegant player of all time, Vladimir Samsonov, and the Greek wall Panagiotis Gionis with his wonderful variations. I hope, that this "old" players Vladimir, Panagiotis and Timo will play as long as possible. They are the good old wine of the international table tennis. Phantastic.
@LeTDDswag8 жыл бұрын
What a match from Gionis he was like a wall, he's a bit like a good wine, at 35-36 he seems better than he ever was. But I think it's also due to Samsonov's relative lack of power, he has a good placement but can't really choke Gionis like the Chinese do against defenders for example, so the rallies are very long and it's tiring for Vladi...
@ottoparts7898 жыл бұрын
Samsonov let gionis go from the table to far all the time, allowing him to play how he wanted. If you notice, gionis would back up then loop to samsonovs backhand and every time made that shot. Crazy match

Last set Samsonov was clearly exhausted, mentally and physically. It's not easy to play a chopper when he has a good day. And indeed Samsonov seems to lack the power to take advantage of the softer returns.
@ktosomcosom19 Жыл бұрын
Sorry for a late reply (just 6 year-late, so hopefully it's fine). Samsonov did seem physically not alright here, perhaps he had a cold/flu. Normally, he has the power when he needs it to finish the point, and is extremely consistent with placement and extremely good reading of the spin that can frustrate even the most patient defensive players. Joo Se-Hyuk chose Samsonov as the player who is hardest to play against.

great match from gionis. it seemed that in the first 2.5 sets samsonov has a tactic which is attacking to gionis' backhand and then slightly pushing him to the middle knowing his is going to use his backhand there, and I guess the rest was attacking stronger to his backhand side. however it didn't really work since each time samsonov attacked slightly too far to his FH side, gionis attacked so sharply samsonov didn't return almost any of those. not to mention what happened when samsonov just attacked his FH side. afterwards I think his main tactic was to attack and then push shortly which worked better, but still not quite did the job due to samsonov lack of power. with less power gionis didn't get very far from the table there had an easier time returning those short balls quite low and spinny and because of that he didn't have to get much faraway from the table in order to chop. both these tactics are very popular against choppers and they usually work, I guess with the lack of power samsonov couldn't quite control the game as he should against chopper

Gionis has a simple and beautiful style. Maybe it is a bit too simple and him lacking some forehand fundamentals made him unable to contest the Chinese, but I always enjoyed watching him
@zazenforever49407 жыл бұрын
Lets just say it, Panagiotis played great. I know at times it is difficult to say that a "chopper" beat an "offensive" player, but that is what occurred. I could be wrong, but there does seem to be a certain amount of looking down on defenders (of all types) from the general table tennis community. I dont understand it as there are many, many styles of play in this sport, yet somehow unless someone "offensive" it is considered to be an inferior style.. Strange.

Are the new balls better for choppers?
@riujithetechnician8 жыл бұрын
a lot of people say that you need more power for this ball to generate spin. So if you already have good power on your spin, there shouldn't be too much problem
@sjjapp6 жыл бұрын
Reduced speed helps for sure, but spin is a defenders ally. Heavy backspin and variation in spin is essential for defenders. Numerous interviews with guys like Joo Se Hyuk back this up, that the new ball is another change in the sport that negatively affects defenders.

Looked like the Panagiotis guy was just playing passive waiting for unforced errors. Good strategy, terrible entertainment.
@angeloskoulas21577 жыл бұрын
That's the whole philosophy behind modern defence: play a disruptive, passive game trying to find an opportunity to attack when it's best for you. Notable advocates for that style are Chen Weixing, Joo Se Hyuk and Panagiotis Gionis

When you attack and win points you are making points from others errors. He couldnt block your topspin, was his error, he could not read your heavy topspins' spin, was his error too. So put how you want to put it, every time you make a point in this sport is because the other guys error.
@beanburritocs8 жыл бұрын
+jazzyjester lol. how is defense cowardly? you have to stand up to your opponent's attack. if you miss your loop against my chop its no different from me missing my chop against your loop.
@JazzyJesterTechPing8 жыл бұрын
Its different, I try to win the point by me attacking and making the point depend on myself and you try to live from my mistakes , you just return and return until I make a mistake. Its like to play with myself against a defender, defender is like mosquito, suck all your blood until you have no power.
