This video is by far the best demonstration I have ever seen of what needs to occur during the take-off phase, and "hinge moment", in order to jump really high. It is a several minute excerpt from a German television production "Im Korper der Topathleten", translated "In the Bodies of Top Athletes". The actual demonstration is about 3 mins into it, but I've included some of the very cool footage of Holm that surrounds it. In this version, I have included my own commentary in just a few places throughout the video. This is from their episode on the high jump, in which they compare and contrast Stefan Holm and Donald Thomas. By the end of the entire episode, you know there really is no comparison between Holm, the greatest high jumper of all time, and Thomas, possibly the greatest raw athlete to ever compete in the high jump...and a cautionary tale. The German series also includes a great episode on Asafa Powell. You can find the entire high jump video at the KZbin channel, groeg92, or embedded on my website, www.gojumphouse.com.

This is one of the best high jump technique videos I've ever seen. Notice how when he's over the bar he pushes his head/shoulders down towards the mat. Although he could improve slightly here, I think he could get a few more cm from that jump if he waited a bit longer before straightening the knees.

Do you have any idea what the scientist has on the bouncing end of the bar? I tried this a couple of times and can't get mine to bounce like that. I love this video!

Hi Tyler, I do not know exactly how the bar was put together in the video ... just that it appears to be a crossbar and is weighted at the top. I've tried it with one of our broken/cut-down crossbars and it did not react with the same height as in the video, although it did rotate when I got the right angle on the throw. Our bar was pretty old and not as rigid as the one in the video. I've meant to try stuffing a super-ball in the end and trying it again, but haven't gotten around to it. I've also just been satisfied to use the video as a demonstration rather than create my own. It's the power of a smart phone with a KZbin app. Us coaches now-a-days are so spoiled:)

i think you hafta round off the bottom of the bar inorder to make it work properly, also you hafta have the correct amount of force with the weight of the bar to get over certain heights with certain angling like in the video, you need to treat it like a real high jump.
