Superb uploads! Thank you for sharing! In my humble opinion, the straddle is aesthetically the most beautiful high jump technique of them all. As far as I remember, the last great athlete who managed to put it to good use was the (East-)German decathlonist Christian Schenk.
@lMobiuscidl
@lMobiuscidl 10 жыл бұрын
Not only that, it is also the most functional. The fosbury flop would be impossible without the mat. The straddle is the natural way. I think the mat should be removed, or at least keep two high jump disciplines: the classic one, and the modern.
@bojandolinar1535
@bojandolinar1535 5 жыл бұрын
@@lMobiuscidl So why not go further and also demand landing on feet only or even landing looking straight? Eastern cut-off technique would probably be the winner. It also wins aesthetics prize.

A well executed straddle is still a beautiful sight. While neither Yaschchenko nor Beilschmidt was exactly classical in his approach when compared to someone like Brumel, they show different corners of the same technique. Beilschmidt has a much straighter lead leg and rolls to clear, whereas Yaschchenko is more your dive straddler, which explains why his rump is so high relative to the rest of his body. Both offer object lessons in how to take off. For all the fuss made about bar clearance technique, nearly all the real work is done on the ground.
@markcheckley3715
@markcheckley3715 2 жыл бұрын
We are told that the advantage of Flop over Straddle is the ability to force the centre of mass downwards by "bending over backwards" and thus allow the centre of mass to pass underneath the bar whilst the body of the athlete passes above it. Understood. But a human body can bend over forwards at a more acute angle than backwards, so would that not enable the centre of mass to be forced even further down? If you then look at the biomechanics of the dive straddle, which is the direction in which Yashenko was taking the event when he was so tragically invalided out, it would appear to have been heading in that direction. Might it be - and I only ask the question - that the arrival of the Flop technique, by ushering in an era of "going over the bar backwards", has restricted the advances which might have been made if athletes had continued to develop the straddle into what would eventually have been something resembling an aerial forward roll ? Maybe someone will try it one day.

Just unfortunate no matter how one looks at it. Both Brumel and Yaschenko never got to achieve full potential due to horrible accidents and injuries. It just was meant for the Fosbury style to take over and succeed. That's just life.
@markcheckley3715
@markcheckley3715 Жыл бұрын
@@mr.sinjin-smyth I think this > kzbin.info1w483-gNelc - is where natural evolution would ultimately have taken straddle, if Flop had not created what I believe to have been a "blind alley" in the development of the event. I am glad to see that some people have been thinking outside the box, and will watch with interest to see if we encounter this technique at a higher level in due course.

It's easier to raise your hand than your leg above your head to move the mass centre higher
@markcheckley3715
@markcheckley3715 Жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. Flop is easier, for that reason amongst others. Good results are achievable more quickly than with straddle. But I wonder if a fully-developed straddle (with the additional work and practice that would undoubtedly entail) would ultimately yield a greater height - all other things, including the skill and quality of the athlete, being equal. @@medureczek

@@thethirdman225 Of course it would have made a difference. Why do you think all high jumpers now use Fosbury technique instead of straddle ? Jumping 2.35 with straddle technique is unbelievable
@thethirdman225
@thethirdman225 3 жыл бұрын
@@moltimondi People use the flop these days because it is easier to teach and learn and results come more quickly. The idea that you can jump higher with it is wrong. Their relative efficiencies are about the same. There are some high jumpers who would probably get better results using the straddle, due to differences in physiology.

Would have made no difference. The straddle takeoff was more efficient than the flop and the flop bar clearance is more efficient. The most important part happens on the ground. Without the height you won't make it.
