@@hansmuller4338 There is a massive difference with how the Russian accent flows in English and how it does in Russian- that alone is proof there's nothing propaganda about it. @@rebeccam.7249 the "Russian" accent Trevor showed is not how anyone would say at all. He very exaggerated it. He literally applied Russian phonology to English words, without ANY change. I have never heard anyone to talk like that. The actual Russian accent in English is much softer, because most Russians actually roll their Rs (English-style R) and pronounce a in bAd, sAd as an English equivalent and not, as Trevor portrayed, as a Russian э sound.

I think Trevor actually hit it on the head there, if a language/accent is constantly presented in a menacing way for example in the media, we develop caution or even fear towards it in real life. And it doesn't even have to be good representation of that language or accent. The number of times I balked at US media casting people with a bad German accent or language skills instead of an actor who could actually portray a realistic German accent or speak German...

I've learnt that just mentioning that you're Russian can make a room go silent quickly. I was in a barber shop getting my hair trimmed and talking to the barber about how my family has lost our heritage a couple generations ago and I was trying to relearn what my family has lost. So the barber asked me what was my heritage and so I said "Russian" apparently my family moved to Canada from Saint Petersburg just before the civil war started. the moment I mentioned that the room turned real quiet for the majority of my time there. I've learnt to use this to my advantage if I just don't feel like talking much that day. Once this covid is all over i plan on making a trip to Russia to better understand my heritage and hopefully teach it to the next generations.

I'll admit, growing up in the 1980's in rural America, the Russian accent & the Russian language scared me but as I grew up & was exposed to more people that were from other places or looked different from me I learned that people are people. There are good people & bad people in all walks of life, color, language, accents, politics.....whatever. You need to judge people individually and by their actions - not anything else. I'm going to have to check out more of your videos because I really like listening to your perspective on things.

I'm a child of Russian immigrants and speak both languages without an accent. Here's the thing, I think: Russian is spoken lower, more to the back of the throat. To English speakers, that can sound menacing. To Russians, Americans sound like they're very, very soft spoken, very gentle, when they're speaking Russian. So Russians speaking English can lighten up, talk from the tip of the tongue, kind of, and English speakers can deepen those vowel sounds.

It is about different language groups. English is a part of Ango-Saxon language family, so basically most of central and western Europe, while Russian is a part of a Slavic group that is not just a different language but a completely other group. For example, the first non-Slavic people we Slavs came into contact with were Germans (Germanic speaking groups) and how do we call them? Nemci, Немци, Німці, Niemcy, Немцы (that's basically all Slavic variations depending on the language). And no one else calls them that. Why? Because to us, they were "unable to speak". That is what the core of the word, nem, means. So it is not what sounds like what to whom, it is about something being strange, unknown. And it is a natural response to be afraid of something strange, that's biology for you. To Slavs, Ango-Saxons sound "evil" and to them, Slavs sound "evil". And yes, Hollywood helped A LOT in the perception of other groups.

Accents can make a HUGE difference in perception. Here in the UK, your 4 different people can read out the same paragraph and what accent they have can make it soooo different. Your accent can make you perceived as sexy, intelligent, a little slow, aggressive or always positive, all depending on where you come from and not what you're saying.

When it comes to movies, the Russian guy is either the villain or the guy the hero had beef with but they shared a vodka and are now friends. The guy in Red is my favourite because he was menacing for like the first five minutes then became a hopeless romantic for the rest of the film so from now on the Russian accent is associated with that guy when I hear it

Vladimir you have a nice smile & Im glad you didn’t get afforded by the video. I was trying to learn Russian before a car wreck & TBI, so now I put that on hold for now. A few years ago when I first decided to learn it to teach people about the Bible I didn’t know that in my family history on my dads side we have some Russian ancestors. I know a little Spanish but not fluent & a little French, German & Italian words. Spanish is Latin based & I find Italian seams easy to learn as it’s close in many ways to Spanish on everything divided up being either male or female words. Russian is Greek based at the opposite of the spectrum from when I was learning Spanish. I know you should start learning the alphabet & it’s sounds. I would like to learn Russian but find it hard to learn even before the brain injury. Any advice to help me? By the way I speak English. Thank goodness I learned it as a child as it is such a complicated language to learn & I give credit to anyone learning it as an adult from another country.

I'm Russian, in Cold war time we didn't have a single movie with American villain. We actually didn't have the therm of a "villain" or "that guy is evil" in movies. Well if it's not Richelieu. If there was a movie with "some bad guys doing bad things", I'm sorry that I have to admit it, it would most likely be Germans because of Ww2, but in WW2 movies... Well, war movies never had a happy ending here. Everyone dies in a gruesome death, women, children, everyone, and Germans would be pictured like a heartless war machine rather than human beings or villains. It's about horror and madness, not "the good guys came and saved everyone" And yes, I hate "Captain America: The first avenger" with all my heart for mocking about WW2

You know he's joking of course. He's a lovely guy who studies so many accents. And does them very well. I don't find you at all scary. :) When I was a child my father worked with what were then known as White Russians, I believe they were Ukrainian. He picked up a number of Russian phrases, just the usual everyday things, and brought these home. I did attempt to learn some Russian at one stage, much later, but having already learned some French and German at school and some Ancient Greek and Hebrew at University, it was proving too confusing to learn yet another alphabet. :) So I only know a handful of Russian words.

It’s a “fact” based on an American set of believes and the American definition of “scary” . It doesn’t apply to all the countries. I’m Mexico we find the Russian accent very masculine and robust, fearless, brave like with lots of balls. Respectable but not associated with fear. I love Russians I have Russian friends and two professors in college that are beyond Fantastic.

Back in the day we had the stand-up comedian Yakov Smirnoff who made the accent more light and friendly and approachable. To be more precise, his Ukrainian accent. (Most of us can't tell the difference.) And there is a great scene in the movie "A Fish Called Wanda" in which John Cleese starts speaking Russian (which he actually does) and it makes Jaime Lee Curtis writhe in passion. However, in most US movies a character speaking English with a Russian accent is almost always an antagonist, a bad guy, so we tend to associate the accent with that. The language really is a grand and passionate one, much like the music of Russia, and my parents enjoyed their several trips to Saint Petersburg.

You're such a good sport, going along with the joke and demonstrating it in your own way - loved that part! We older folk in the Western half of this crazy world were brought up and indoctrinated to fear the Russians, which is no doubt why we find the accent "scary", but you, kind sir, show that you guys are just as human and cool as anyone else and that we should discard the preconceptions we have of other nations based solely on what politicians and the media that they control have shoved down our throats in order to further their own selfish pursuits. We South Africans need to learn that of all the diverse races living in our very own country, too. Mind you, that's true for most countries, I guess. Peace brother. I'll be watching and appreciating more of your content.
