Part 8: • Larry Holmes Correctly...
Part 6: • Larry Holmes on Going ...
Part 1: • Larry Holmes on Droppi...
--------
Larry Holmes retired from boxing at 37 after losing his rematch to Michael Spinks. However, the former heavyweight champion was back in the ring less than two years later after Don King gave him $500,000 on the spot to fight Mike Tyson. While Holmes believed he could beat Tyson, he was only given a few weeks to prepare for the fight after the date was pushed up. Holmes ended up losing the fight but was paid $3.5 million. While Holmes referred to Tyson as a good guy, he talked about accurately predicting that Tyson would encounter personal trouble and end up in prison.

Fun Facts: Larry Holmes was 38 years old when he fought Tyson, and lost in the 4th round, in 1988. After that fight, he fought 24 more times, for another 14 years! This fight was the only time Larry was knocked out in 75 fights

Exactly, and the guy got up from big shots against shavers. It just shows what level Mike was on back then. That was his absolute prime and he'd make short work of just about anybody who got in the ring with him. Since him what heavyweight fighter has captured the public? None, his popularity to us kids back then is probably what others thought of Dempsey, Louis, Ali during their peaks. He's certainly earned a spot with those guys in terms of how big he was for the sport.

I know Mike is much faster, and has better skills. And isn't just a slugger. But like Shavers, that's what he wants to do, is slug it out with you. And Larry had enough skills and boxer IQ to prevent it from being that fight. And Larry can take a hit, too. The fact it took Tyson 4 rounds to knockout a older and out of shape Holmes. At first I thought Holmes was full of S-h-i-t, b/c all I remember was him being koed flat, but rewatching the last 2 rounds, it does appear accurate. Holmes conditioning was terrible, he probably didn't have enough time to prepare for the fight and he gave Tyson a very hard time in round 3. In round 4, Tyson kd him 2x times but Holmes got up quickly 2x and was engaging with Tyson. For the final kd, Holmes throws a left and his right upper cut that had bothered Tyson all fight got caught in the ropes and mike tyson gave him the perfect left hook with Holmes arm caught in the ropes. Really, shitty for holmes to be honest, but he was never in the condition he needed to be to win the fight so it probably changed nothing.

Tyson was going for the kill, I doubt that Larry could even think straight like "I'm gonna lure this dumbass to the ropes so I can hit him with an uppercut"! He was on the ropes more because of Tyson relentless pressure on him: a couple of seconds before his arm got caught on the ropes Iron Mike had already hit him for times! Larry's _forgetting_ some details or minimizing due credit to an opponent (not unusual for Larry) and that Tyson actually dropped him twice before the final KO - the first time with a bazooka of a single punch that literally spun Holmes around on the way down. Credit to Larry that he got up at all and tried to walk it off and tie Tyson up but he was still being battered by Tyson, and when he tried to fire back in the middle of that ongoing barrage he caught his arm in the rope while trying to launch a 'Hail Mary' uppercut and Tyson dropped him for the 3rd and final time in that same round.
