Actually in the beginning of rap up until like 87, like 3/4 of rap was party records (Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaataa, Run DMC, Newcleus, the Miami Bass scene, the LA electro rap scene, UTFO, Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J). It wasn’t til the introduction of an alternative more lyrical and more hardcore artists that things became the “Golden era of 88-early 2000s” that all the old heads talk about. And even then all the alt hip hop and gangsta rap’s biggest hit of the 90s was party bangers

That's an oxymoron, to be technical it takes getting to a level of artistry to a point where you are able to be technical with it. You literally and philosophically can't say technicality doesn't mean you aren't a great artist. It would depend on what you mean by great and what I mean by great. Which would spark another debate in which we would argue who's version of great should more value, yours or mine. We would never agree so there's no point. I agree with RA that the respect for the craft isn't what it used, but it's really debatable whether rappers could have become even more lyrical than they were in the mid to late 90's without totally alienating potential fans in the process. If you listen to Ras Kass, Canibus (1999-2003 especially), or some of the stuff that underground rappers like Sir Menelik and El-P were doing in the late 90's, you will probably reach the conclusion that that whole ultra lyrical thing arguably went as far as it could before it simply became a chore to listen to. Don't get me wrong, I love lyrical rappers, but they just aren't as marketable. Kendrick and Cole in some ways built on what artists in the last decade like Common and Lupe Fiasco started, mixing lyrical, socially conscious rap with pop hooks, and those guys are killing it right now commercially, but it's an incredibly difficult balancing act and most fail at doing it. Not even Kweli pulled it off on a mainstream level (e.g The Beautiful Struggle and Eardrum) and that guy had strong critical support and love from the hip-hop community. And both of those guys are much bigger than Common, Lupe and Kweli ever were. They are huge exceptions to the rule that aren't really indicative of anything in particular. They are talented guys that managed to break through and sell a shit ton of records, but it doesn't happen often. In short, I think the problem with mainstream rap being dumbed down isn't as big of a problem as the new underground rappers lacking innovation. That is a much bigger problem in my view simply because the underground was traditionally were the lifeblood was, where the most original ideas came from etc.

Kayne West overrated????Compared to DJ Quik, 9th Wonder, the late Jay Dilla, Madlib, Apollo Brown, Pete Rick, Q-Tip, Organized Noize, The Medicine Men(Beats By the Pound), RZA, The Beatminerz, DJ Premier, Khrysis, Cold 187um(Big Hutch), Daz Dillager, Warren G, Havoc, Diamond D, Large Processor, the late DJ Crazy Toones, DJ U-Neek, DJ Pooh, Erick Sermon, Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, Swizz Beats, David Bannerr, Big K.R.I.T, Bangladesh, DJ Paul, Mannie Fresh and Timberland and a few more. Kanye West is good as a producer. Just not on their level. Same goes for P-Diddy and DJ Khalad.

R.A is fire but you have to see the scale of kanye west's movement in the culture of music and lifestyle for sure. He has broken down so many doors and cnstantly pushed creativity kanye is a legeend for sure This takes nothing away from Top musicians like alc and preemo but Kanye is way more than just a rapper or producer or designer. He is definetly reached icon status right up there with hov, nas and em
@higglyjuff4 жыл бұрын
Sure, but that doesn't make him not overrated. He is an okay rapper with some excellent production skills. He is iconic to a lot of people, but in a way that extends beyond rap. So whilst he could be a legend in music generally, he isn't a legend to hip hop and rap culture in its purist form.
@akhilchandrashekar17254 жыл бұрын
@@higglyjuff overrated or not only depends on perspective there is no scale to it. Why Kanye is legend to hip hop and culture 1) the aim of any game is to grow and branch and no one has done that bigger than Kanye, maybe Tyler with his recent body of work maybe. But don't forget hip hop sounded mad different before graduation and 808's. 2) as T.I stated on why Nipsey is a legend in the same exact context Kanye is, and you opinion or mine will fade but his name amd work won't that itself proves it. 3) Also look at how much of hip hop he is anchoring with his label and co signs. If hip hop is dinner Kanye just made the table bigger and brought more food. There is no way Kanye isn't a hip hop legend.
@higglyjuff4 жыл бұрын
@@akhilchandrashekar1725 As I said, Kanye is more influential to music generally speaking than to Hip Hop. If you want to talk about what he has done in music generally, then sure, his music is fantastic. But as far as Hip Hop, it's incredibly overrated. If you want another example, take Kendrick. There goes an artist that came through to the mainstream with an incredibly unique style, whilst still being distinctly Hip Hop. When I look at Kanye's music, I want to instantly compare him to pop artists instead of rappers, simply because that's where his style belonged. The raw and gritty side of Hip Hop is lost in the polish that his music offers.
@christophertanner77574 жыл бұрын
Dj Vlad is not as hip hop savvy as he thinks he is. He uses popular "hip-hop" to his advantage. Difference is. R.a. knows hip hop and is hip hop.

johnnycage435- Kanye is not the only one who did John Legend 1st project! My man William aka Will-I-Am. Did several songs on that project including co-writing "Ordinary People"!!! Speaking of which, Kanye has mad respect for Will as a producer-musician/rapper/beatmaker Will was a big influence on Kanye's decision to become a pop artist, even though it wasn't Will's intention initially to be Pop!!!

Kanye used to be a dope producer and song maker but after his first 2 albums, he just fell way off. He just now has a few good ones here and there nowadays. As a rapper, when will you people ever realize that Kanye is in the same boat as Diddy and Dr. Dre? He's a producer first and foremost amd just like Dre, his rhymes were written for him
@hennessyapplejuice83317 жыл бұрын
This is why DJ Quik is the best artist/producer of all time but bcuz he's underground he doesn't get the respect he should.You can not like his subject matter but he still a slick rapper that has funny and clever lines.Is he a Nas or top 10 MC of all time? No..but he still is above average and writes his own songs among all the rest of the many things he does in the studio that most people have to go to school to learn
