Deon Cole on Damon Wayans Quitting Standup After Cosby Joke Backlash

In this VladTV Flashback from 2016, Deon Cole spoke on a run-in he had on an elevator in New York City with Damon Wayans. Wayans told Cole that he'd quit standup after receiving backlash over a Bill Cosby joke he did on the Breakfast Club. "It hurt me to see how sad he was in a sense because he told me he retired. He told me he retired from standup." Cole says since then; Wayans was questioned about the EgyptAir plane that crashed in May and his response was simply, "I'm an American, I no longer have an opinion."

Just because you laugh doesn’t mean the comedian is not serious about the underlying message. Some jokes are meant to reflect honest opinions about the world but are repackaged in a humorous light. Damon Wayne standup jokes on Bill Cosby’s situation was his honest opinion. Which is fine but be prepared to be criticized for it. But even if a joke doesn’t reflect the comedian's honest opinions it can still be in bad taste. Jokes can perpetuate prejudices.The cold hard reality is this: some jokes are just bigoted. There are racist jokes out there and there are sexist jokes. A comedian may do it unintentionally. One good example of this Eddie Murphy’s Delirious bit on homosexuality. It is very homophobic. Eddie Murphy realized this and later apologized because he understands how it was harmful. Unintentionally laughing at a bigoted joke doesn’t make you a bad person. I laughed when I first saw it, but like Eddie Murphy I grew as a adult and realize this is pretty homophobic. The butt of the joke are gay people suffering from AIDS. People can be laughing at a joke for different reasons, one being “it’s funny because it’s absurd” the other being “it’s funny because it’s true”. We can and should analyze our entertainment especially when a growing number of people says it’s bigoted. You don’t have to always agree with them. Sometimes people really are reading too much into a joke. They are being too sensitive. But I think we should be more open to criticism of our entertainment instead of getting defensive.

I loved this interview. I got to hear Deon Cole TALK-No Interruption. The world is so sensitive. I spoke on a issue about correctional officers and inmates and relationships. This black male officer got offended on a matter I knew first hand from family who were incarcerated from various state facilities and federal facilities and my career with law enforcement. The guard from Georgia reported me to Face books Police who. Not only band me but closed my entire account down, taking friends I met around the world messeges, pictures, Voice Cards and the last three video messages my late husband sent me before he died in 2018. All because I stated that both men and women have sexual relationships with inmates in jail. So now my remarks to everything will be, "I am a American in America and I have no opinion-Periodt".

I was looking for tickets at my nearest comedy club and I couldn’t believe how some of the OGs, who have been in the game for 20+ years, were struggling to sell out while a couple of social media comics, who are super famous & have millions of followers, were sold out every night. The times have changed. People want what’s popular rather than what’s original like he said. Additionally, some of the social media comics that are selling out were skit makers, and now all of a sudden are “stand up” comedians, but never studied the genre, fell in love with genre, didn’t grow up watching the greats, etc. Makes no sense to me.

I love Deon Cole. He's just too real. I'm so tired of how overly sensitive society has become. COMEDY has NO BOUNDARIES. I have tremendous respect for Deon for what he's achieved but some of what he's saying isn't accurate. I'm from Illinois so I know a lot of Chicago comics with whom he has worked and they are among the most creative, innovative, and fearless performers in any genre. There is no shortage of talent and courage in Chicago, let alone the stand-up comedy world at large. Once again, I have nothing but love for Mr. Cole bu it surprises be that someone surrounded by so many brilliant comics would paint such a bleak picture.
