I had a bit slip out of the collet during a cut recently also! It was crazy scary. It was a 1/4" shaft bit, so it did break the bit, but in a weird place...very near the non-cutting end of the bit. It can actually still be used, in fact, since there is so much of the shaft of the bit there. Glad you're ok!

Interesting and good feedback about the bit with the cut being too aggressive. I managed to gouge a 1/2" hole through the 3/4" sacrificial board and well into my vacuum plenum in the early days of getting to know my cnc. I now pay a lot more attention to ensuring the bit is in the collet is as tight as possible! Also, there is a neat trick to tightening and loosening the collet chuck with the way you hold two spanners so they are slightly apart from each other, with one hand you can squeeze the spanners together. This results in a lot more control especially compared to having a spanner in each hand. Having noticed the end grain on the base of legs for outdoor furniture tended to rot fairly quickly, I now cut a rubber pad the same profile as the leg end and apply it with contact adhesive. Legs 5 years later show no rot where they have been sitting on the concrete. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David

Hi Jay, Great project ... thanks for sharing. From experience ... collets (as well as router bits) are consumables. I've worn out three sets of collets (1/2" and 1/4") over the last 20 years using a Porter Cable 75182 router in my CNC. If I have a bit slip (and I have ... it's never nice), I toss both the bit and the collet. I keep spares on hand to keep running ... and I buy replacements as I use them. Osage orange is used for fence corner posts here. It's never straight but will outlast barbed wire without finish. It's almost a nuisance tree and will take over if not controlled.

maybe a torquewrench so you "know" you have not undertorqued or OVERtorqued the collet? replacing the spindle because of overcompensating seems expensive too

Collets do not require excessive torque when tightening. They supply you with a wrench set that shouldn’t allow over tightening. If you use a snipe or longer wrench set you run the risk of damaging the threads on your spindle. Also make sure not to bottom out the tool.

Agree completely. If a bit is loose enough to come out of the collet after tightening with the wrenches provided either the collet is damaged somehow, there is dirt or grit in there, or the shank of the bit is out of round. Years of machinist work behind me and never had a tool come out of a collet, and way more stress than any wood cutting. I would take a close look at the collet, the ID of the holder, and the shank of that bit. The collet shown in the video is the best design available, they hold like a miser holding a gold coin.

Hi Steve, that is not my experience. Matching the bit shaft diameter to the collet size and going "as tight as" has proven most successful to me. It is difficult to describe the right amount of force to be applied, but it is higher than what I expected it would be. For the most part, I doubt this is as tight as what is physically possible (especially so if you are using very long handled spanners). Ensuring you have the shafts, collet nuts, collets and the tapered recess they neatly fit into devoid of any dust, debris or detritus is also critical. Cheers, David.

Kidding aside, I've had a a pattern bit slip while I was cutting with a plunge cut router and when I finally realized I had a problem, after I seriously messed up my template 🙄🙄 At first I thought the depth stop on my router was slipping... Tightened that up so much that it seemed overkill or a design flaw... I still noticed depth drift and then I checked the bit and it practically came out just from pulling down on it. Scary as hell.

When you say Osage Orange is a dense wood, I remember when I was younger and into Archery in a fairly big way, I bought a half dozen arrows for myself and they were Osage Orange, Even the best archers mess up sometimes and while I was practicing one day, one of the arrows hit the side of the target and deflected into a concrete wall in the range. The tip was a bit blunt after that incident(target arrows, not broadheads), but there was no damage to the shaft.

Over tightening the collets will eventually lead to loose collet. There is a reason for short wrenches

Very nice build, Jay~! I have my grandmother's antique 5-legged sofa table made of Mahogany that is beautiful. I rarely see a 5th anywhere and it's a huge conversation starter with our friends and visitors. Also, very happy to see that no flesh or tools were harmed in the making of this video. I've had a router bit start to slip out of the collet in my handheld router while making a dado with a 3/4" bit. The bit was in the original collet that came with the router, and I guess after so many years it just failed and didn't hold tight anymore. I caught it in time to prevent a huge gaffe in my project (only shop stuff, so it wasn't a big deal), but it would have gone into my workbench and likely hit an aluminum t-track if unnoticed. The collet was plenty tight, but just wore out over time. I had a spare so no biggie.

Great video of the build. You mentioned the you used a wax oil finish for the outdoor application... have you ever thought of epoxying the bottom of the bench legs? This would stop any wicking of water when the concrete gets wet.

The mach 4 program itself i dont think is the problem its the os. Should prob come up with a easy flip up style safety barrier or something at least on one side of the cnc. I think i would be freaked out to, just thinking about what could have happened especially with a big bit.

I use easel to run my cnc sometimes for simplicity and I’ve noticed that if I change the feed rate mid project it has a tendency to glitch out on me. The glitch usually presents itself as going out of the cut path which is annoying. I’ve found that as long as I leave it alone while it’s cutting I’m good to go 😂

I had that issue with upcut spiral bits, switched to downcut and it pushes down on the material and doesn't try to pull the bit out.
