Rest easy, Cleo. It sounds like he fulfilled his mission and you gave him everything a dog could hope for. I have a 15 year old catahoula/lab mix and when her time comes I know I'm going to be a wreck.

I once read a book on Near-Death experiences and my favorite story in it was of a young boy who flat-lined during an operation. He knew the Lord was there with him, and was approaching this gorgeous, bright place, but couldn't quite see it clearly through the haze. He could make out his grandparents coming toward him, and about that time two family dogs that had passed came busting through the haze and were on him. The kid didn't want to leave but the Lord told him it wasn't time yet, and that He would take very good care of his dogs. : ) He knows what we love and will take good care of sweet Cleo.

Losing a dog SUCKS! I usually spend the last 5 years of a dog's life worrying about the coming end. It is horrible. I swear. sitting with my last dog (an Australian shepherd) while she was put to sleep (she had cancer and was suffering) was the worst experience of my entire life. And I've seen/endured some bad stuff in my life.... I have a 12 year old dog right now and every day I look at her and wonder when we will have to go through that nightmare again. But somehow, the good years we get so spend together makes it worthwhile.

Hey Jay, I'm a long time follower of your channel, going all the way back to when your workshop was an apartment. I am terribly sorry to hear the sad news about Cleo. Last September I had to put my Pitbull/Whippet mix, Eva, down. She developed a very fast spreading cancer in her bladder. As much as I loved her, I didn't have it in me to make her suffer through cancer treatments. She gave me almost 14 very enjoyable and loving years. It's never easy to say goodbye to our four legged family members. Keeping you in my prayers.

It's been 20 years since I last had a dog. After I had to put down Hobbes, I came home drank half a bottle of vodka to get past it. Haven't had a dog since. I look forward to getting a dog when I hit 73 years of age since I'll likely pass away before the dog!!

Hi Jay. I'm sorry to hear about your dog. We had a dog named Cleo several years ago. When we had to put her down, it was one of the worst things ever. Since then, we've had a couple of other dogs and it is very hard to lose one. They really are family members and they love us unconditionally. I feel myself tearing up a little bit now as I think of the dogs we have now and our sweet Cleo. You're a good person. She was blessed to have been a member of your family. I really appreciate your content!

Oh man, I feel you, we have 2 dogs, but the house seems like a sanctuary for birds. We have taken care of many injured birds. Currently, we have a small pond for them because of the heat and none of them are in a cage, they just come here to eat a refresh the only ones we have in cages are the ones in recovery, but after that, we release them. Sorry for your lost, I know is hard

Hard to lose a dog. Our dog we lost a month ago after 17 years with us. We got here when a couple moved and just left the dog in the house. She had lost her hearing and went blind the last 8 months. It is amazing how they can adjust .

Jay, so sorry about Cleo. We had Thor, a Chow Chow, that we had for 12 years and that was so hard saying goodbye then Sam, a Rottweiler, and after a short 6 years we had to say goodbye... it just isn't in me to have to say goodbye again. I get my dog fix from Rosy, a Golden Retriever, down the street... nothing in the world like a dog's greeting when you come home. They don't care what sort of day you had they just love you... IF (big if) I were to ever get another it would be a shelter dog. You will never forget Cleo time has a way of numbing the hurt. Good on ya' brother! People could learn a lot from (loved) dogs-just sayin'

Jay, sorry about Cleo, always rough. Just a quick comment on Scooter. Please do not give pets haircuts thinking that your making him more comfortable. Haircuts actually have the opposite effect. Dogs do not sweat to keep cool (except their paws). Instead they have built in AC (basically a swamp cooler). By panting, they evaporate fluids from their nose, tongue, and lungs, which cools their blood and body from the inside. Cutting their fur is like removing the insulation on your house, the AC must work much harder to keep things comfortable. Even humans who live in very hot dry regions will insulate against the heat. Insulating a 98F body in 120F heat with heavy robes helps to keep the heat out while their loose fit allows evaporating sweat to create a cool pocket of air near the skin. A good brushing to keep their coat in peak condition, some shade, and lots of water is all your dog needs to keep cool on all but the most humid hot days. They will naturally be lazy to keep from generating excess body heat, but that doesn't mean they are uncomfortable. If its very hot and humid, then a pool and some fans can help them cool from the outside in, if bringing them into AC isn't an option. Note: Fans alone, again, can have the opposite effect. Without sweat or other moisture to evaporate, your taking them from an oven to a convection oven. The hot air circulates through the fur removing any cooler air close to the skin, making them hotter rather than cooler. If you pay attention, you will often see dogs laying stretched out, belly on the cool ground and nose into the breeze on hot days. This streamlines the hot air over their body so it doesn't get under the fur, while using the moving air to aid evaporative cooling on their nose and tongue.
