A nation is a group characterized by a common culture/history. Eg.the Maori. A state is a sovereign governing polity. Eg. New Zealand. A nation state is therefore a sovereign governing polity characterized by a common culture/history. Eg. Japan

Is there really? There might be variations, but from what I've heard, Japan is really quite japanese. Singapore is not a nation-state, it is a colonial/imperial cosmopolitan city-state, or something like that.

I like you. You aren't some boring, old professor trying to explain this, but a young guy who can break down a complex subject such as this one, and many others like it, and teach those of us who are uneducated in that subject. I always come away from your videos with a new thought or idea in my mind that I want to discuss, but nobody around me shares the same enthusiasm. I wish there was a whole website of people like you, and a forum to disuss said topics. I could lose myself in such a site.

It is amazing that we have an outlet in which we can speak our minds without judgement--or at least without peer pressure. Yes, that causes people to say awful things. But it also enables us to discuss complicated topics with respectful peers and not feel like everyone in the room is judging us or not smart enough to understand.

@5:23: "What are the remedies, when you have 2 peoples living in a territory to which both can lay claim. Territories which are part of their history, their family history." What exactly is the difference in this history between the aboriginal Palestinian (Jews, Christians and Muslims) and the Caucasian settlers? All you really need is the moral/intellectual courage (which you seem to possess) to talk about the Balfour Declaration, just like you eloquently dissect any other issue. @5:35 This is the one thing we can do as an international community to understand the history and example of the Balfour Declaration which is the cause of the mess. Then we need to apply the same medicine as we applied to the apartheid problem in South Africa. It's really that straightforward.

@gombost I see that now, thanks for pointing it out. However, a decloration is only affective if all nations sign onto it and abide by it. I guess that's the rub. Like here in the US we think of ourselves as Americans before we think of ourselves as New Yorkers or Iowens. We need to think were "Earthlings" above all other divisions before the tide can raise all our boats.

I LOVE THIS CHANNEL. great job man! quick thought though, I don't think Kurds are the largest ethnic group without a nation state of thier own, considering that there are 70 million Marathis without a Marathi state, 70 million Tamils without a Tamil state, 40 million Sindhis without a Sindhi state, and 40 million Sikhs without a Sikh state. (All figures are from Wikipedia and may be wrong/biased). I'm pretty sure that there are other sizeable ethnic minorities in Africa and China. Hope this offers some perspective.

Interesting that you use the term "North Ireland," most people do not. The Protestant community might say: I live in Britain, and the Catholic community might say: I live in the North of Ireland (not recognising the authority of the UK State verbally). Peace in the North came about in 1998 after the Good Friday Agreement (unsure where your reference to 2007 comes from)? I also appreciate that you have made a point about the ill treated minority Catholic community. The majority of 'The Troubles' as we call them, revolved around civil rights in an apartheid state. Most people don't know that. You could also make a similar claim about the apartheid state of Israel today. The other issue in the Troubles was reunification for the Catholic community, which many are still working toward. The issue in the North of Ireland, however, is reawakening because of the loss of power experienced by the Protestant community, over the last 15 years, since civil rights were achieved. Keep up the good work!

To keep it short and sweet, "State" refers to the Government itself(Institutions,etc) where as "Nation" generally refers to the people. Usually a common language, race, history,etc. Although in Multicultural nations such as The U.S and Canada, the race part isn't always the case.

I thought 'nation state' was seldomly used unthinkingly. I thought 'nation state' was always used in a way that emphasises the distinction from 'nation' from 'state'. It's 'country' which confuses the ideas of nation and state.

You might want to revise the map of Ireland. It's completely inaccurate! It's a minor detail, but it was harder to get it wrong than get it right. Also, a bit of revision on Irish history might not go astray if you're going to use it as an example.

Interestin'insight, but do the people really need to have the same identity to consider themselves a nation. A good example of this is Morocco, a multi-ethnic nation ruled by a state. Berbers and Arabs, even though devided by history and origin, and also ethnicity, consider themselves moroccans in a deep sense. Even language is not the same. While berbers speak Rifi, Shalha and other minor dialects and Arabs the same, you never really feel that there is a "them". Or at least no "them" in a xenophobic or outsider sense.
@gaycarddealer8371

Its not necessary for their to be only one ethnic group in the country in order for them to be an operable country. By definition maybe but multi ethnic nations can work. But mainly if they become multi national. Switzerland for example has made it work. They posted several official languages and have local governments tending to the affairs of the many ethnic groups. They maintain peace throughout the country. By definition they may not be a single unified nation, but they are a multi ethnic state that has been able to make peace without these solutions that have been proposed.

i think you are wrong. I think after the industrial revolution and with the increase in production the bourgeois wanted to protect their markets so they came up with a solution to draw up borders. This was the nation state. when their production exceeded the demands of their markets they had to come up with a new solution to sell their products, the solution was consumer societies without borders. Like the EU. multiculturalism played a big part. Nationalism was used as a means of wealth trans

This is obviously an old video, but since Brexit there have been even more talks between the Republic and Northern Ireland and it was accepted by the EU leaders at a Brexit summit just this week that Ireland will be a whole nation once again, the North may rejoin the republic. I am Irish (from the republic) and have no religious views I am neither Catholic nor Protestant, but this could lead the way for other Nation States to solve their differences peacefully, I never ever thought this would happen in my life time!

It's interesting that people often say it was the 'southern' Catholic Ireland. This is not even geographically correct. The most northern part of the island of Ireland is Donegal (which is in the Republic of Ireland). Northern Ireland is not even all of Ulster. Hence why it is called 'Northern' Ireland and not 'North' Ireland. It might be more correct to call it 'Northern-Eastern Ireland'. Or possibly give it a new name. Since the geographical name causes a lot of confusion - I've met people before who believe a line is drawn across the middle of the Island. It would as if Canada was called - 'Northern America'.
