Hi Gissele! I am Greek, but my Mother is from Montana, and she was born in a Hutterite Colony. She used to tell me all these stories, and showing me pictures but I could never imagine the life in a colony. Two years ago, I visited Montana for the first time in my life, I met my family, and we also visited a Hutterite Colony which was wonderful and I got emotional to see were my mother was born and grew up. You are such a hard working, special people, and I couldn't be more proud of my Mom's heritage. You keep the tradition and love. I absolutely love your videos, and I am so happy that I can finally show to my Greek friends & family how Hutterite life looks like, through everyday life videos. Thank you ❤

@@gisellewaldner9406 I would love to share my parent's story. My Mom was born and raised in Montana, at the age of 18 she moved in New York for studies. My Dad or Pateras ( in Greek) was born in a Greek Island, Kefallonia. At the age of 15 he moved in New York for work. Things were pretty hard back then in Greece and it was quite common for people and especially young kids to leave the country and move to the States. After a while the rest of my Dad's family moved in New York, that they were still back and forth, they never really left Greece, especially my grandparents. After a few years my Dad opened his own restaurants, whith the last one he owned in New York, that would be the lucky one to meet my Mom. My Dad was working behind the bar, and my Mom went to that restaurant with her friends. The guy who ordered her drinks was my Dad! This how they started talking, and after a while they became a couple. That year they visited Greece, and my Mom absolutely loved it! This is how the took the decision to move in Greece. They had 4 children ( including me). My grandparents from Montana visited many times Greece and they loved it!

@@gisellewaldner9406 yes, my husband and I had a silage business that used to do some crop cutting/silaging for a colony in AB and Belle Plain colony in SK. My dad visited regularly in his job as a SaskPower lineman. He was always welcomed so warmly and given bread and fruit. His mom’s colony broke up, I don’t know why it didn’t survive, in the 1940’s or 50’s, outside of Langham SK. He loved her so much and always talked about how her food was how she showed him Love. Her name was Mary Gross. She was widowed and married an ex-Mennonite and they had my dad as their youngest child. His fathers name was Jacob Penner
@gisellewaldner94063 жыл бұрын
Hmm that's interesting maybe someone here knows why they broke apart the older generation usually remember such things I can try to find out for you if you wish. 😊
@ldp67883 жыл бұрын
@@gisellewaldner9406 that would be interesting, thank you. I know there are still Penner Mennonites in MB.. I don’t know much of our history except I think my father’s Father and brothers came first to the States to Nebraska and then on to Saskatchewan. I also think his moms side (Gross) also immigrated from Nebraska. I believe both the Mennonite and Hutterite Colonies his Dad and Mom came to join were around Langham, outside of Saskatoon, Sk. The Korean War might have been an influence as some of his half brothers ended up fighting in the Korean War, two died in that war, one came home. They were adult men when my Dad was little. I only met his mom once as a small child before she passed away. She still dressed Hutterite even after living off the colony. His dad, Jacob Penner, kind of became a recluse in a small shack in their back yard! He spent his time writing political letters and commentary and sending them off to various newspapers. I wish I knew more, I’ve tried doing some research but I haven’t found much and my dads recollections are more memories than historical fact and my dad passed away last year. 😔 Dad was always proud of his Hutterite roots and it definitely made me more sensitive to some of the less kind words and thoughts towards our local colonies. I’m proud to say I have defended your way of life, my whole life, even if I don’t completely understand it. I believe there is more positives than negatives in your lifestyle and it takes strength to not conform to societal demands to behave or look a certain way. 💪🏻🙌🏻

She always made a quick stringbean soup for lunch or dinner using canned ingredients. Canned green & wax beans, canned small potatoes & evaporated milk. I’m not sure if she used broth. It was a very inexpensive version that you could always have the ingredients on hand. I have never seen or heard of this soup anywhere else until now. It brought back some wonderful memories! I was lucky enough to have my grandmother live until she was 94. She spent at least a month with us summers while my children were young. We love to tease visitors from other countries by offering them bunny chow which has absolutey nothing to do with bunnies or chows. Since you don’t like taco soup, try chicken tortilla soup. It’s literally just chicken broth, chicken, black beans, corn, and ice tomatoes. I just use salt and pepper seasoning, but you can certainly use my pepper flakes jalapeños cumin or whatever your people like. Then you Toupet with cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, tortilla strips or chips or the broken pieces at the bottom of the bag, and avocado. It’s very versatile and you can pretty much put In it and on it whatever you like. It’s our family’s favorite soup.

I notice you all have quite an abundance of food. Was wondering if you ever prepare meals for the poor in the community at various times or if you ever contribute any pantry items to them.
@gisellewaldner94063 жыл бұрын
yes we do a lot of times we prepared food on the colony and served it at the local soup kitchen although with covid right now we have not been able to go in and serve them. during the summer months we send a lot of our veggies to them, potatoes for one example get put in massive totes and sent in.

Giselle, wow! What an incredibly busy week for you. I was just reading your description. I also really appreciate you putting in the times for where to find the recipes in the video. What beautiful food. What do you use for your 'soup broth' in the Strankl Soup recipe? Very intrigued at your lifestyle, a few other questions, if you have time ... At what age does a girl start cooking for the community? ... and who trains her? I'm sure at home she learns much from her Mother, but to cook in the big kitchens is much different. Also ... who comes up with these huge recipes and timings to create these batches of food? That's quite the feat to create that much food and make it still taste well. Do Mother's with children have to do community kitchen duty? The hours are so far reaching. Thanks so much. ❤️🌷
