best advice is, r kid , have a bash/word of mouth, if you can put up with loads of hours ( to make a decent wage). the crack is, the turn over of waggoners is massive. they spend "plenty" to get the ticket, 12 month later, f/that. some get a good crack, alas, not many. good luck.

Brilliant video Hayley you did really well. When I passed my test the guy at the agency I was signed up to said I've got just the job for you I was shunting trailers at the Cowley Rover parts delivery centre I spent more time going backwards than forwards but it was great experience. All credit to your company for giving you the time in the factory as a shunter lots of others would have just told you to get on with it. I'm sure you and them will reap the rewards of this time spent gaining confidence.

@James Ross .... And I hauled 360's and Dump Trucks in and out of the Cowley plant when they demolished it James !!! 1993 if I remember correctly ....I was bringing a punctured Volvo A30 back to London and at 11 pm on the A40 I got pulled over .... The cops thought the Dump truck was about to fall off the bed !!! Looking at the lowloader from behind and in the dark also , you would think 'twas about to go .....They were good times ... Let's try and be encouraging towards Hayley ... There seems to be something very genuine about the lady

You did well, using the space and setting it up is the trick. When you parked the flat you were more fluent. My dad taught me, he used to say, stop using the steering wheel! So he meant go from your good side, if you get it wrong stop, and pull forward and give it another bite. You will crack it very quickly. Thanks for posting

Shunting is great for practicing manoeuvres. The condition you received that truck is disgraceful. Ive never had that in my years of trucking. Now on freight trains, those locomotive cabs are just used by everybody. You’ll get the hang of manipulating the auto box with the throttle after a while. Biggest tips I got when starting about reversing that helped me: 1. Use small inputs, don’t start turning the wheel left right like mad, that’ll come with experience as you will know exactly what it does before the trailer does it: 2. Don’t concentrate on where the back of the trailer is going, but draw an imaginary line that the centre axle of the trailer needs to follow and try stick to that. 3. The shorter the trailer, the smaller your steering movement wants to be. 4. NEVER LET ANYBODY HURRY YOU, if you need to take an extra shunt or 5, do it. If you want to get out and take a look, do it. Any idiot laughing at you for doing that has either forgotten how he started or will inevitably hit something soon enough. Best of luck! It’ll seem become second nature soon.

@Jim Bob I’ve only tried ETS once recently. I did a reverse on it. It’s not completely the same, but yes, I would say I does help to get used to reversing. I think it mostly helps to think about which way to turn the steering wheel. When I first started I imaged I had two ropes attached to each corner of my trailer to the steering wheel. You pull to imaginary rope in the direction you want the back to go. So if for example you want to trailer to go right, you pull with the imaginary rope attached to your wheel, so you’ll be turning your wheel to the left. Hope that makes sense. See what works for you :)

@Zinc Partriot ...."any man ( or Woman ! ) that never made a mistake never made anything " .... I'd say that if someone started a conversation with stories about clusterf.cks , silly situations and downright stupidity , it would merit becoming a theatre comedy !! Shout out to Jake from Jake's Autos Nottingham , thanks for the help in getting me into my locked truck back in '95 .... Engine running , doors locked and John locked outside in his boxers and boots at 8 pm ish , first week of January and raining ..... One expensive pee .. The mighty Foden with the early fly by wire ' , now you'd be halfway across a roundabout before that yoke would decide to pull .... New drivers had little problems coz they weren't set in their ways .... You needed to allow the truck to feel the load and respond ..if you hit the accelerator you'd confuse the ECU .....oooh

Well done Haley. My tip if it helps. A farmer once showed me (On an really old truck without power steering) to think of the steering wheel as a 50p, move it slowly one section at a time which I have since gone on to find tends to stop me from over steering and then having to wind it madly back again to correct it on modern stuff. Drive safe and enjoy your new drives.

Well done , reversing is an art and takes some learning and I'm impressed for your first few days. I was always taught regarding reversing, that what ever lock you put on the steering wheel take it off twice as quick. That was you will straighten up quicker. And also when you have to correct a mistake you don't need to go as far forward you just need good mirror checks and quicker steering to get results. 👍

My first day involved blind reversing into a side road as I couldn’t get out the other end of a road as it narrowed to less than 8 feet with no warning signs! Took me about 15 mins to turn and I upset a lot of “rat run” rush hour traffic! Cars parked both sides all very tight had to get out 10 times to check everything but still saved doing accident forms!

So proud of you Hayley you just get on with it and a smile as well xx What you have to remember is with the drag system the tractor unit is nearly twice the length of yours so the steering pivot point is that much further back so as you said you could correct it more easily . So in reality you need to just accept you have you have passed your test in the drag outfit and now move forward with a shorter tractor unit and the longer trailer and the steering pivot in reality is just behind the cab . As another driver had said quick hand and slow foot xx With the doorway just make a mental note of the width difference between trailer and the marker posts and get half each side xx You will make this no problem xx

I have just come across your vids, so first off: 🥳congratulations on passing your test and those maneuvers were absolutely fine. I've been on class 1 for about 3 years now and still make a pigs ear of reversing from time to time. Even some older drivers have said it will always happen every now and again. First day went well. When I was learning to reverse I was always told to baby steer, ie smallest movement on the steering wheel to acheive the direction you want. When you was going in middle door, the jackknife was correct but when you was told to take it off, just enough steer to bring your unit in line with trailer. you are not trying to change the trailers direction at this point. If you want stop, handbrake on and assess. You can now see where the vehicle is heading from both sides. Now you can see what small adjustments need to be made. once continuing you should be able to reverse on the mirrors, if too much of the rear of the trailer is in the left mirror a small(baby) steer into that mirror ie left hand down a bit to left mirror and vice versa keeping the back of the trailer in both mirrors. Good luck

Well done Hayley 👍 nothing improves your general driving and reversing than experience. It’ll all click after a few months and you’ll be slotting that trailer in to ridiculous places with ease. Once it starts taking longer to get the paperwork and reference numbers than to reverse in somewhere you’ll know you’re a real trucker 😝 longer trailers without rear steering axles require more steering to manoeuvre than shorter trailers and even less if they have got rear steer. Gentle movements needed in that case. I have to reverse petrol tankers with no overhang so they go all over the place really easy. Keep up the good work we are all heroes keeping the economy going. 👍

Well done halye the reversing will get easier the more times you do it as always practice makes perfect and shunting trailers is a great way to get the experience of manouvering in tight spaces going backwards just rememeber to know your enviroment and whats around you and give yourself as much space as you can find infact the more space the better and never be afraid to put the handbrake on and get out to have a look to see where your at which is what i used to do when i first started out.. My first artic job was driving to switzerland and id never been outside the uk up to that point so you can imagine how much i was bricking it when i got to dover to ship out to calais and was told by the steveodre i had to reverse up the ramp and into the wings at the rear of the vessel…yeah i was sweating bullets but done it in one and perfect parked between the chain restraints holes on the floor😊 Every time you get better its a personal victory for you and eventually you will do it wothout even thinking so just keep at it girl your doing just great and to be honest from watching this you have already nailed it when you reveresed inside the building coz its a nightmare going from daylight into a dark factory loading area well done you..👍😎

When I look back I laugh now.. Why didn't I just pull it over so it was straight?? Haha. Go for it I say - why not? 😊

Good video shunting is great practise, used to do loads of it when i first started. Backing from light into dark is a nightmare but your banksman should make himself visible. nice and steady away is the best idea and get out and check.

We all started on day one looking like numpty when reversing. It's nothing but seat time and practice. When reversing a tri axle use the middle one as your guide that's your pivot point. So sort of stear that axle where you want to go .

One thing I see lots of drivers doing, new and not that new on the wheel is, going from full lock left to right to left to right... Once that skip allows You to see the big gate, relax. Lean your back back, look thru the mirrors and move slowly. Use the steering gently too. The mirrors are set to your normal driving positiom, so hanging out the door's window to look at your strong side might give You a sense of confidence but You need to get used to reversing using the mirrors. Also, there were some people there. Ask them to watch You reversing, just in case. You're doing very good. All the best

Always difficult backing in the dark,it's all guess work. Best advice is small steers and often instead of big handfuls if that makes sense. Small corrections are easy to chase once you start snakinking your forever going lock to lock. Been doing it 31 years and it still bites you when you relax! Anyway, well done you, stay safe.

That is one of the trickiest reverses I know, your going from brightly lit area to a dark are, through a tiny doorway, and you did fine from what I could see.

@@chrishoggett1375 I’ve had drivers who prefer coming later in the day, when the sun is behind the canopy, and it’s a little darker because it’s easier for them to see.
