I am ex-forces class 2 driver from the 80's and have not driven a HGV for over 20 years, I am taking my class 1 at the end of the month and finding these types of videos extremely helpful in getting my mind back in the game. I must say that this video is by far the best one I have seen, you manage to explain everything very clearly. Thank you for taking the time to make these as they really do help.

Good video Haley. A note on the Shunt Button, when used the trailer has no brakes at all (not just ABS) which can be risky with a loaded trailer. All in all you have covered lots of tips that lots of us have had to learn the hard way. This video will be of great value to new starts and some experienced drivers too. Keep up the good work.

Excellent vid. What this young lady is teaching is mostly Technique i.e...the required fundamentals. For new drivers this is infinitely a lot more valuable than experience and skill. Technique on a normal Days driving will probably get you out of most situations, experience and skill will get you out of the most unnormal situations. She would make a good instructor.

Hey. Hayley great tutorial. One other way of releasing air instead of pumping the foot brake there is a little bung clip thing under both the rear air tanks. Hold that to the side / push it in and it releases air a lot quicker than pumping the brake. It’s also good practice in winter time to drain the air tanks this way to dispel any moisture that may be in there. I learned about this when I had a coolant leak in my air system and had to drain it every day before it got fixed.
@michaelthomas3646
@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
to be honnest I thought Hayley would have mentioned the valve release, but think she is thinking of instead of walking around to the passenger side of the cab to the air tanks say like you got all your other lines attached then safest way off the cat walk is down on the drivers side, and think that is why Hayley mentioned the brake pedal instead is a lot quicker to get to than the air tanks. but there are circumstances whereby the valve release can get stuck open, so maybe another reason why she didn't mention the air valve.

Great video Hayley. I was always taught to lower my suspension before coupling to a trailer. But never attach fifth wheel right away. Raise trailer so the legs are slightly off the ground, the jump back in, and attached 5th wheel. Them your 2 tugs. I guess everyone is taught differently. Thanks for sharing, this video was very helpful Hayley 👍
@michaelthomas3646
@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
the problem with raising the trailer before you are attached is if the brakes on the trailer aren't on, like sometimes the case in a dock, then you could roll the trailer. or if parked on the edge of a hill, the only thing stopping the trailer from moving is the landing legs. while this should be checked before coupling up to a new trailer there are instances whereby you don't want to fully lift the trailer legs totally off the ground before the tug test. so kind of another safety thing in another way.
@michaelthomas3646
@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
but also less damage to the cargo if the trailer slips off the 5th wheel by rolling back. so all perfect logic if you think about it, just that unless you see the mishaps or experience them yourself then you wouldn't think of things like this.

Hi Hayley, this was a great video, really helpful to get a few tips before doing class 1 as well. Did an assessment drive with the wag and drag nearly 2 weeks ago and I even had to reverse it, one shunt to get it back in its parking spot with guidance, really surprised at how little lock on the steering you need to get them started. Going onto hookloader training next then hopefully class 1, not sure if it will be with the artic or wag and drag, the latter follows so well and the other drivers who drive wag and drag have said it's much easier. I will look out for part 2 video😊
@michaelthomas3646
@michaelthomas3646 2 жыл бұрын
I think Hayley's main problem at the start of her career was that she was taught on the wag and drag, so not used to how an artic operates differently, and in certain situations how an artic is better than a wag and drag like in a yard, until the comments helped her, and hopefully these videos will help more new drivers.
@elizabethmaybrown6715
@elizabethmaybrown6715 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelthomas3646 some firms only run wag and drag, the one I work for does have both but I am more likely to be out in a wag and drag hookloader than an artic, the tips are still relevant regarding airlines though. Our yard has a one way system for vehicles and as the trailers for the RORO bins are front loading you have to unhitch then weigh in

I learned it kind of from experience from the days of helping my grandfather about too much weight on the headboard, and that being the reason why the trailer legs weren't easy to do, that was back in the days before air ride suspension. but did mention it to another youtube driver about lifting the trailer as the headboard had too much wieght. even though didn't help her on the day due to the delay of upload, think she will always remember that tip now. as in work smarter not harder I think I said. 🙂

@danielfriar6169
@danielfriar6169 2 жыл бұрын
@@azeemshahidmuhammad8199 Yes I did car to class one. The training is quite intense. My trainers didn't really run me down, they did however point out my mistakes that I made while on my lessons. Best advice is to listen and take what they say and take it on the chin and change it. The whole point in lessons is to make the mistakes and learn from them so you don't make them on your driving test. I never passed my class 1 on my first driving test, I had a really bad experience with the test day and examiner and it just went pear shaped from there and it really knocked my confidence to the point where I was ready to throw in the towel on attempting it again. Needless to say the 2nd time went alot better and had a much nicer examiner and I managed to pass. I think the pass rate for car to class 1 first time is only 59% so not very high. Just keep going with the training and I'm sure you will smash the driving test :)

Thank you for the reply and I know exactly what you mean about throwing towel in. I've had 16 hours so far and have got 16 left and test Friday. My mistake are correct distances from kerb keep getting told off too slow too fast too close to wide. So hopefully get this used to in time or another £500 for re-test etc.. these you tube videos especially hayley are really detailed better than instructors.

yeah agree with everything in this vlog, while mentioned a few things mentioned here, one I know I didn't was about lifting the trailer if the legs were stiff, but did mention it a while ago to another new driver after watching her struggle with the legs in a vlog (who stopped vlogging). I was wondering about modern trucks with the indicator thing, as only really worked on, and been out in the classic trucks of the 70's and 80's which had a 2nd bulb next to the main indicator that would flash for each direction. while did drive a modern S-Reg Daf (or private number plated) that was only on a runway, and only truck on the runway so no need to indicate. only thing I wasn't aware of is curtain sided trailer curtain types as never worked with them. yeah position of the trailer axle is very important when doing sharp turns like too far forward gives more of a tail swing, too far back gives less of a tail swing, that is why I said in the comment at the time to allow an extra 2 feet extra for the chance of error/caution. the number of axles can also affect the tail swing as well. but overall a good video Hayley.

I wish we had those buttons on American Trailers. If I have to move a trailer I have to connect my red(emergency) air line. Also I like the way European trucks have the ability to lower and raise the airbags to such a degree. Most American trucks have a switch on the dash to lower your airbags. But not nearly as much. I've been driving for 30 years so obviously I don't need a tutorial but it's a good and interesting video

Hayley. Thank you so much for the video. I started driving class 1 about a month ago. My biggest problem is knowing when to take the lock off whilst reversing into a bay-space. Seems like im snaking back in all the time. Im getting the job done but it's not pretty.

usually when you position at around 45 degree angle you want to straighten the truck and trailer at around 10 degree angle (front trailer wheels compared to rear trailer wheels with the line). you will get the hang of it eventually, but if you look at the angle of the wheels it will give you a good sense of when to straighten and this is only a pointer, as not a fully licenced driver, just spent most of my life being in trucks, around trucks, pc truck simulators, reversing a truck on a runway into a marked area. Hayley did do a reversing a trailer video if you look that up.

but to stop the trailer from sneaking off to the side the best action is to keep watching the mirrors as well, then you can see when the trailer is turning one way or the other. the other tip I would give is never to reverse more distance than is needed, like if a yard is 100 feet wide, keep 10 feet to the dock side as maximum, and the 40 feet for the trailer, so in effect you aren't having to reverse the 50 extra feet. another tip is the trailer will always want to turn, there is next to no point of the trailer even being perfectly inline with the truck even if you backed up 1 mile you would still find the trailer wants to turn even when you think you are perfectly straight, the trick is just take your time that way you can catch it sooner, and allow for more observations.

Hi Hayley you say should do a walk around your lorry for a safty check for your safty and others. Well a few years ago i did that in a car park and got hit by a Luton van whole vehicle brushed against me when driven by and i was not at fault So on the safety not always the case 😆
