As a brand new pass that's only been taught to pass the reverse manoeuvre needed for the test this was very helpful to me. I do think that the reverse test should be at least reversing into a parking bay

As someone who has taught students reversing in motor cars to test standard I've always reckoned HGV class1 driver s to be the most talented drivers. This very informative and clear video has cemented my opinion. Great reversing skills and keeping it real in a working yard with real moving hazards to deal with! I see HGV drivers doing impossible reverses in far too small supermarket car parks, in the dark, in the wet, with parked cars every which way! Much respect to you all.

Good tutorial. The instructor is decent; knows what he's doing and explains everything well. Also the other guy did really well; top reversing. I used to be a shunter driver in a factory yard and passed on my second attempt. Difficult skill to learn and what I found is that there isn't a lot of middle ground when learning to reverse a lorry; either you are good at it or terrible! Top tip: practice shunting trailers in an area with limited forward movement because there will be times on the job when you have hardly any room to manoeuvre.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I’m now back behind to wheel delivering to DCs and it’s like I’ve never drove one. I still struggle to back on a bay my angles can still go to shit I still can’t get use to reversing with an automatic gearbox. Very good training there. Wish i had the same training when I passed the class 1. The driving school only teaches you to drive an reverse on a certain level just to pass the test. I recently had an assessment and faild because I was unable to put the trailer on a bay. The positioning at the beginning is very important, I didn't know that. Hopefully next time I'll do it better.

Thanks for a great video. I'm back on the wagons after a 30 year break and your phrase about "driving the trailer in and not reversing it in" was just the reminder I needed to get my mindset back. Cheers. Love the scented candle gag at the start :)

Would love to see more of this kind of content Jason. Especially with the licenses being combined soon, my main fear is going to my first job as a fresh pass having only experienced the one reversing manouver which you can just remember what to do based on the cones and being confronted with a tight bay or challenging reverse where you actually have to know how to manipulate your trailer and adjust to the surroundings. I was recommended this video 5 years later in the comments of a vlog, and as far as I've seen, it's still by far the best guide on KZbin. There's a lot of information about passing the tests and vlogs following people on the job, but very little as detailed as this on the in depth techniques and mindsets that really help the new drivers being thrown in at the deep end.

Not driven any trucks for around 15 years due to health issues. But now looking to return to some sort of driving work. I am stressing about my reversing ability after so long. I drove triple spits on Seddys for 10 years when I was young then did 20 years of IT sat at a desk, now about to take my medical to get my Class 1 back and go back to driving at 53. In all the years I did IT I don't think I was ever as happy as I was at the wheel of a bendy one. But I still get the shivers when I think of blindsiding it. Over confidence causes more accidents then lack of experience in my opinion. 100 shunts is better than one accident. But I'm nervous as hell of the reversing after all this time, but Ill do what i was taught by my old driving mentor, slow as fuck.. safe as fuck.. again thanks Jay.

I found it a lot easier with my head out and looking back. Afterwards I was doing fine, getting a bit to cocky and taking a a shunt or 2 but getting in for a pass. On the actual test you're mind just goes blank and your nerves kick in bit luckily I did fine and passed with 2 shunts, the examiner said I didn't have to take the 2nd one, I know but I wanted the trailer straight in the bay.
