Happy Vyshyvanka Day, Anna! All three of your embroidered garments are really beautiful. I quite like the second one too, the colour combination is lovely too, as well as the embroidery design. I giggled at your "inside and outside" remark, it reminded me of my Dad's attempts at getting the English language right! The region-specific embroidery patterns are incredibly interesting to read about. Many vyshyvanka tell a story too. Each area has its well-known colours and pattern designs. I love that aspect of the vyshyvanka! I know a lot of the cultural history became hidden because of the past repression of Ukraine's cultural traditions - but as with everything in Ukraine, you can't keep a good thing down! I heard that some shirts and other garments were actually hidden underground to keep them safe - now rediscovered. It is wonderful to see the research and handed-down knowledge being documented and kept for posterity now. The internet has really helped too, to preserve that important history. Some of the seamstresses who make vyshyvanka in traditional hand-sewn style, in Ukraine, are donating the profits from their sales to the Ukrainian Army, etc., It's lovely to see Ukrainian women online passing on their sewing skills and knowledge - for us descendants who were unable to be taught by our ancestors. It's a lovely way to connect us to our heritage.

Thx for todays vlog. Vyshyvankas are so cool ❤️ Because Picasso had one, I want one too ! Can you identify areas where shirts are from, based on ornament? Can you tell where Mr. Presindent Zelenskys shirt was from? How about Picassos vyshyvankas area? I think Linen is best material for Vyshyvankas. It looks best. Cotton might be nice as well, you probably refer that with canvas? I like roughness in design.. is there winter vyshyvankas? Thank you for consistent stream of intellectual and educational content. I have my Mother's embroidered items that she did in her Elementary school years, it is priceless to me and my Sister, it shows her progress, and also some crocheting, she said her Mother keeps those with her during their flight from the Russians as they fled West, her thoughts were that it would be some of her kids only real things of their heritage in Chernovitsi. I'm hoping that my kids will cherish them, but for now culture means little to them, 2nd generation Canadian, and really no interest in what we call " The Old County".

@@AnnafromUkraine I did visit, but was during USSR days, 1984, it was nice, but really about the people, country, not about the Government, I was mid 20s, single, the cute girls wanted a date, marry, move to Canada, Mom said it not smart, they will miss home, and it's not good to live under Russia, so today I understand, then felt flattered, but was a shy kid. So here we are and I see why that was such a very wise statement, now I have 2 daughters possibly a bit older than you.

E Pluribus Unum Out of many, One. We are a multinational nation, so we have diverse traditional dress and different time period dress. If you examine American Girl dolls, you will discover multiple examples. Native American regalia differs among regions, from cedar hats in the Pacific Northwest to the Southeast Seminole Indians. We have a tremendous collection of museums, from the Smithsonian Buildings in Washington, D.C. to scattered museums across the United States.

The Austrian/Hungarian side of my family regularly attended social events at a Donauschwaben German club near Cleveland OH. This branch of the German diaspora, in the wake of the world wars, endured heavy persecution at the hands of the Yugoslavians, Soviets & Warsaw Pact powers before immigrating west. Like many ethnic diasporas, preserving their language & customs is paramount. One verse in their anthem loosely translated emphasizes this pretty well: "Deiner Sprache, deiner Sitte, Deinen Toten bleibe treu! Steh in deines Volkes Mitte, Was sein Schicksal immer sei!" "Remain loyal to your language, customs and ancestors, no matter what the cost may be!"

I know I am a few day late, but I'll share the link that Anna was talking about (I browsed throught the comments and the description and I didn't find it, so I'll give it here) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH-pdpaVlrCZi9k It's a playlist of the "spadok" project, with the traditional costumes of various areas and I think it contains all the videos made. I watched them all, and I really recommend it to you guys, it's a work of quality and beauty ! I love the collar of the third vyshyvanka, it's unusual and I like it! My favorite is the second with various colors and rich embroidery, and indeed it must look very nice with jeans. I was watching a documentary about Ukraine (before the war) with my mom the other day, and we both agreed that your traditional costume is very beautiful and good looking, and compared to it, the traditional costume of my native region is not attractive at all, haha. Some traditional clothes from some regions are known in France (like Alsace or Brittany) but the one from my area is defintely not popular at all or attractive. I don't know it super well but the couple times I saw it in pictures I didn't like it much. It's so cool that you have a day to celebrate traditional costumes.
