I noticed Pres. Zelenskyy’s very cool, very Ukrainian military vyshyvanka during his Independence Day speech, so I’m glad to learn more about the artist behind it. It’s especially cool that the design was by a Belorussian artist, because her country is also a victim of Putin’s aggression (via his support for the dictator Lukashenko). Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦

Unfortunately you will not be able to visit any of the Ukraine Black Sea coastline .... because they won't have any ! After it has mopped up in Kherson, the Russians will move on West to Odesa. In Afghanistan, during the time of the Soviet occupation, there were carpets that featured designs of military equipment. I was not surprised that tanks and other armaments would be incorperated into Ukrainian garments.

Very noticeable that the Soviet - whoops, Russian - senior military staff appear wearing their full regalia and insignia (have to say, on cheap shirts about the quality I wore in the Boy Scouts), whilst the Ukrainians have been pretty understated - a T-shirt with just one rank insignia. So when Zelensky appears in a hand-made shirt that is still understated but reflects his culture - we know we're backing the right horse. Slava Ukraini.

I am so glad the Ukrainians have their own national shirt, the vyshyvanka. My native country Cuba, has the Guayabera from the times of the war of independence from Spain. Its usually white linen with 4 pockets in front. The back has pannels that resemble the flag minus the colors. The side have slots to slide in a machete. It was fought on horse back then.. The Mexicans and others have tried to steal the design but we KNOW its origins. I hope Zelenskyy brings back the vyshyvanka popularity as a National object of Ukrainian pride. Slava Ukraini.
