My first class practicing simple turns.
More challenging than I imagined. Now that I’m not going into landing right after the tow release, I have to break my habit of pulling in so hard to gain airspeed when I release the tow line.
In the last half of the class easterly cross wind developed which made the task even more challenging but it was a lot of fun.
Hoping for more altitudes and progress in the next class. Thank you for stopping by to check out.

The rear view from the keel is better for reviewing how effectively you turn, to check if you're cross-controlling, and to study your landing approach to the LZ. The side view from the crossbar is better when you're reviewing your flare timing and position, and for checking your angle of attack when foot launching. When you try to turn right, do you pull in with your right hand (so that your right hip goes to your right wrist) and at the same time PUSH AWAY with your left hand (you're pushing yourself away from the left down tube)? When you turn left, do you pull with your left hand and push away with your right hand? You need to use both hands at the same time during the turn, otherwise you end up cross-controlling (or twisting your trunk if flying upright). By the way, is Mie Greenberg your second KZbin channel? I can't tell if that's also you.

Omg thank you so much Romano! No I’m not doing what you said here. That makes sense. I’ll talk to my instructor about it before try executing it in the next class. So Mie is another pilot. She is also Asian like me and similar in height and built it’s been confusing to some people😅 She is my role model though, we’ve become so close through this sport and we talk almost daily😊

Thank you so much for your feedback Pete😃 Ok, good Im going to keep the camera on the keel for now. It is at Blue Sky Flight Park in Manquin VA. Steve Wendt is my instructor. My plan is to focus on getting truck tow rating from him and move on to foot launch. Mountain launch is my ultimate goal and I want to travel different sites eventually. I think Lookout is going to be the place to go as far as me pursuing my first mountain flight experience. A looooong way to go still😅

@@nanoraflyz keep at it. You’re doing a great job. I started out at Lookout Mountain and got my foot launch and now working with Steve for truck tow. I was there Thursday and got some flights in but the weather was to crappy for the long runway.

Review your video again, sometimes you think you’re moving your weight but you twist on your shoulders instead of moving the weight. Good control on tow and also the fact that you push out for flare with open palms! You seem a bit stiff, that to me seems you’re overthinking. Try to have some fun too and you’ll be surprised how everything becomes ‘easy’ ;)
@nanoraflyz
@nanoraflyz 2 жыл бұрын
Ya I noticed that body twisting as well😅 Before this class I was getting more and more comfortable getting towed, Steve could tell too. But now I have this brand new task, my brain is back to super busy mode. I couldn’t even think about how high he was towing me up to. More I practice I know I’ll naturally be less tense. I really need to break my habit of pulling in hard, that’s actually my favorite part in every flight though… Steve kept reminding me to pull in just a little like a half inch to release the tow line… Im pretty sure I was pull in easily an inch every flight and that was the main reason why I lost altitude so quickly.

It’s easier said than done Bari. I cannot make myself comfortable at this stage. Im so focused on with my senses trying to understand how the glider will react my maneuver. I’m sure with more practice and confidence the full joy of flight will naturally follow. Im enjoying every moment of it tho😉

Word of serious advise. NEVER let your bridal hang over your speed bar. If you ever step on it or it gets caught on anything, Including a week or crabgrass. You will have a serious WHACK problem! If the tow person lets go of the tow line, let go on your end also. ALWAYS!!!!!!!! Be safe,,,,,,,,,,, You're doing great. Just remember this. If they have not taught you the J turn, Make them teach you. It's hard to turn at slower speeds. Pull in, turn, the push out slightly as required to keep for side slipping. Speed is your friend. You should be pulling in real hard on your landing approaches to be able to deal with wind sheer etc. It's a real thing. We here in AZ learn that really quickly. The last one was VERY GOOD!!!! You did a great job on that one. Realizing you flared a tad soon, but kept enough energy for the final flare. Great job!!!!

I actually had a lockout condition on Saturday and a 1/2 second prior to my releasing, the aerotow pilot released the tow rope. I in turn released the tow rope on my end and tucked the bridle into my harness.

@@HGAviator That's great! interested in seeing more vids of your progression. I'm hoping to get back in the air after missing 2 seasons from shoulder trouble. Here in AZ we start in October. So you are doing aerotow now? Or did you mean scooter tow?
@HGAviator
@HGAviator 2 жыл бұрын
I've never done winch or scooter tow. Just the thought of it scares the heck out out me. But, I got aerotow rated at Wallaby Ranch Hang Gliding, with Malcolm around 10 yreas ago. And I also had a season of aerotow in AZ at Sonora Wings. If you were there last spring, we may have met. I've been flying hang gliders for over 44 years. 99.9% foot launch in CA. Although I've also flown Point of the Mountain and inspiration point in Utah. I live in Florida now, so I've flying at Wallaby Ranch.

@@HGAviator My brother and I learned to fly at Sonora Wings with aerotow a few years ago. I agree that it's harder to be towed up than foot launching. But until I get to H3, I can't do Mingus because the ramp is so short to launch. It's either drive to Andy Jackson and spend a few days hoping the weather is right, or get towed up here. The nice thing about getting towed up is that you can land where you parked your car. That being said, I prefer foot launching way better even if I need to catch a ride up the mountain.

Thank you Garry. My instructor gives gas to tension the tow line and I think that’s one last check he does to make sure everything is intact and all the cables are in the right placement. I’ve never stepped on or got the tow line caught in something because he tensions it. There obviously is a backup tow line in case anything were to happen to the main one. And yes, check check check to all your advice. I’m aware. Something I’m still working on. Im pretty good at keeping airspeed. Sometimes I’m pulled in a little too much I was told by my instructor and senior pilots at the park. Last stretch of landing approach is my favorite part of flying!!! Love to pull in hard to land! Lol Im a baby bird still has so much learn and getting used to. But I’m forever thankful to have Steve as my instructor. He is all about safety and makes sure we both are on the same page before moving on to next thing. So happy to have all of this support from everywhere too. Can’t be more grateful. Thank you sir.
