VLOG #8 - FEEDING MY BABY TEGU & BUILDING TRUST!

I've been researching non-stop about how to tame a tegu, and I finally came across an awesome video from @clintsreptiles where Kevin McCurley from NERD explains his process for understanding and training his reptiles. AWESOME STUFF! Link below!

Awesome video. You should make an update video. We just got a tegu the other weekend and working on getting him to not freak out when we walk in front of the enclosure. He's awesome when you pull him out but for some reason he runs and geeks when he's in his enclosure.

Now I know I have to move his enclosure because it’s on the floor so I’m raising it up and I’ll be building a bigger one with a front enclosure sooner than I thought because I think coming in from the top is what is scaring my baby tegu.

Good encounters each time are great because one bad one will set you back a ton. One good thing to do is put a shirt that you have worn all day in his enclosure. The shirt will have your scent on it and by placing it in his enclosure he will get familiar with your scent. This should allow the tegu or monitor to come around easier. Food for thought.

Thanks HHX! I did have a shirt in there but tossed it when I moved enclosures. I need to get a new one in there. How long do you think until he starts warming up? About a month in and I'm just starting to get tongue flicks on my hand, and he runs to me for food, but if I just pop my hand in and lay it there he's still afraid and scurrys away.

@@SNKELTD Honestly, Its really up to the Tegu. Some are more skidish than others. Some can come around in months and others a year or more. One thing I did see you do is while you were feeding the Tegu you tried to lead him on your hand with food. That is a good way to help build trust but do not grab them. Let them crawl on and off you as they want. I think you are already on a good road to socializing your Tegu. I look forward into seeing your progress.

Just got my baby tegu. Shes a month old and quite the little ass already.

have my baby chaco tegu for about three weeks now and I just literally scoop him up and take him in my room and he sits on lap untill i pick him up and let him walk on my arms / only on first day he was scared after no more .Also put in tub or bucket with a bit of warm water (shoulder height) and let him use you to get out , every tegu is different tho but mine so far is cool with me getting him out of his burrow

I want to get a tegu once I'm able to to get someone in to work part time with me on my breeding ventures. In addition to my balls, I have 10 permanent bearded dragons and 6 permanent blue tongue skinks (along with over 100 offspring a year from them), and they're quite the handful.

I need help my baby tegu will not eat at all. All he does is hide in his hide and just sleeps all day and night. Might be brumating not sure.

What lighting do you use for your baby getting one in a months time like to hear how others do it I’m keeping him in a 3 foot vivariums until I build my custom adult vivariums any recommendations?

uvb important as well as 75 watt basking bulb and i like blue night heat lamp for a bit at nights
