I love how serious you take your job ! You was not playing about showing any names ! I love to see it. I can also appreciate seeing a young black female as an SLP. There’s not many of us ! Not only is this a great field if you have a passion for kids but it also pays well. So who wouldn’t want to do a job that they love PLUS getting paid well ! - I’ll also be going to school for the same thing after I’m done getting my BA in psychology (currently)... thank you for this vlog sis ❤️

I enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing! I know working with high school age is different from smaller, elementary school children. Just another video idea: You could do a room tour and discuss some of things you use/how you stay organized.

Thank you very much for sharing! I am currently a first year middle school teacher and I am interested in the SLP world. I think it might really be the career for me and I would love to work as an SLP in a school. I have the greatest impact and find the most meaning when I work with students in small groups or one on one. Building those relationships is what makes me feel like I’m being a good teacher. The parts where I am trying to manage a large group (30 students in some classes) exhaust me as an introverted person. I am not naturally authoritative and dislike this aspect of the job. Being a school SLP seems to have all the parts of the job I like minus a few of the things I dislike, plus some extra duties and paperwork. I appreciate you sharing as I research and try to figure out if this path is right for me. :)

You gave me a really great idea regarding my business. I have my office space and now I am building my clientele. I had a contract with the state to eval and it fell through so I am starting from scratch. I love they idea of waking up early and working on something so I am not worried about it throughout the day. I currently contract myself with a special needs school 3-22 yrs of age and 95% of my caseload is AAC and autism, I have some ED kiddos. I also PRN for a residential hospital for one side Autism/behavioral (6-18 yrs) and the other side adult psych. So I am having a good time with all of this great experience. When I was in Nashville, I had some high schoolers. I did the same thing as far as making them take ownership and come to tx sessions at designated times. They knew the consequences if they didn't show up. I have to admit, if a student was absent too many times I would go get them and discuss responsibility and so on and so forth. Im currently a junior in high school and i’m really interesting in Speech Language Pathology, so watching your videos these past few years has been SO helpful! Random question, but in college how much science was required? (Chem, bio, etc) Kinda worried about that part, bc science is definitely my weaker area haha :)

Current grad student here! Math and science have never been my strongest subjects (I honestly struggled through all my high school science classes), but Kacy is right; working hard is all you can do. *Utilize KZbin educators!!* The coursework is a lot more medical/scientific than I previously expected, but I've loved it anyway. I like to think that speech path is a fun mix of education, nursing, linguistics, audiology, and psychology. The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) requires us to take a physical science (chemistry, bio, or physics) and a social science (psych, sociology) that is NOT associated with a speech path department. I don't know if AP classes can count towards that. Some graduate programs require a full anatomy and physiology course, but not all. In my case, I took intro to chemistry at a community college over the summer. Undergrad programs will also include a speech-specific anatomy course (basically everything from the diaphragm up) and an acoustics/speech science course. Other courses will include information related to different diagnoses in kids and adults, like autism, strokes, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, and language disorders. TLDR: You can always Google something like "COMD course descriptions + [the name of a university]" to get an idea of what to expect.

Social Thinking! I did a lesson on say it vs think it with my AU support class last year and I used lots of videos. Have you ever used PlayPosit? You can input videos and ask questions during certain points throughout the video. That was my first year doing that type of lessons too but when I found my footing, I really enjoyed it.

I am 22 years old really wanting to get into being a high school SLP. From some research (minimal!) it states that only %4 of males major as an SLP. It really is making me hesitate should I let that bother me? Are males just not suited for this field? Not trying to be sexist at all just had an amazing SLP throughout middle school/high school and want to make the same difference she made in my life. Please let me know cause I really want to do this!

It's true that there are not a lot of men compared to women but I think it's slowly changing. Men ARE suited for this field but our field still has a long way to go as far as people knowing about it and what it is we do. I had a few male classmates in grad school who are thriving now. If you follow me on IG and DM me, I can share their pages with you. You should absolutely go for it. Never let a statistic stop you. You'll be great! ☺️

I don't simply because I have done my best to master being as productive and organized as I can during the day with documentation. Not that other SLPs aren't, but I set up strict boundaries with bringing work home. And since I've done that- I know I have to get it done at work.

@ABlessing2019 I know this is late but don’t let your age stop you from pursuing this if this is truly something you want to do. I’m starting SLP grad school next week and I’m 39 (will be 40 in a few weeks, actually). I spent the last couple of years completing grad school prerequisites while working full time and it was tough, but I made it through and so can you if you’re committed. It’s a cliche but it’s true: you’re going to get older anyway so you might as well spend the time doing something that’s meaningful to you. Good luck in whatever you decide to do!!
