Thank you Ana for your guidance in watering cactus in winter. I've been told by every cactus grower that to keep my cactus totally dry in winter but I've been feeling very nervous. My cacti are changing color and shrinking and shriveled. Worried that I may lose some of them, I watched this video and you gave what to watch for when it is ok to water your cacti. I just gave the neediest ones a sip and I feel much better.
Thank you for this! I've seen so many people tell beginners not to water their cacti and succulents during the winter, some even insulting me for advising to water in the cold months. To happy to see someone with such a large and happy collection shed some light on the topic.

I learned my lesson the hard way. I felt guilty admitting at first that I water even during winter. But then after saying it, I found out many (like you) do the same thing. 😉 Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, Ana! As you know, we've had a lot of rain in CA so my cacti and succulents aren't suffering from water loss. It's always good to know what to look for though and since it's normally very dry here, your advice is appreciated!

I was wishing we’d get some of that California rain at that time so I can at least collect rainwater. But whatever I collected just evaporated the next day. Hahaha. But the slight shower helped my garden a lot.

This was a great update on your winter cacti care😁🤲💖I see you give water because it is a dry winter👍I have been trying my Notocactus leninghausii in my unheated greenhouse and it is doing surprisingly well👌You made a great point about watering your cacti☝️They need a bit of water to keep their roots healthy, exactly🤲💖Your Aloe blue elf is winter hardy. I have been looking for one, and your blue elf has flowers coming😁🙌Wonderful! I see your Ferocactus cylindraceus is doing fine👍And that trichocereus turning orange, that's what mine does every winter too🙏No worries there. Thank you for the video🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Very interesting video, Ana. Here in northern Italy there is a lot of humidity during the winter, so I won't wet anything until spring, on the contrary I have to try to protect from humidity to avoid rot. I only water the plants that I keep in the house in the warmth. Each wrong watering means a dead plant. Sooner or later I will learn not to make mistakes ... I wish you and your plants a good 2022 🌵

Oo nga Kat, somehow naiinggit ako sa inyo kasi May rest din kayo from plant chores kapag winter. You can afford not to water. Ako, I have to still water. Lalo na yung mga aloes and Haworthias kasi growth season nila is winter time sa akin. Pero your method works din. You get so many flowers sa greenhouse mo kapag spring. 🥰 Can’t wait for spring!

Awesome video, Ana. A few of mine will need a little bit of water soon, some of the smaller ones are a bit dehydrated. Can’t wait for spring as well, hopefully some of the ones I left in the greenhouse to overwinter will bloom well this year. Your desert gardens are looking great as well considering the time of year. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day and weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜☕️

It seems to be working as i see some buds on plants that i never thought would give me flowers. Daz is right. Your desert gardens are looking wonderful. Looking forward to seeing your spring blooms again! 🌸🌺🌼🌵💚😍

Thanks to both of you. Yeah, I’m surprised how my desert garden quickly recovered with just a slight sprinkle of rain. A week ago, the Trichocereus were all shriveled and the Opuntia was flopping. What an amazing difference a little rain can do.

@CactusCaffeine2 жыл бұрын

Your videos are always so helpful and enjoyable. Whether or not to water in winter always presents a dilemma for me. I like your idea of misting some of them instead of actually watering them. I live in the Pacific Northwest, on the upper Olympic Peninsula, where everything grows mold. I keep my plants indoors with normal household day/night temps and naturally constant humidity of 60%. My cacti did better in my solar adobe house in New Mexico which was always flooded with sunlight & the humidity was a constant 40%. I recently acquired a lovely little Echinocereus Rigidissimus, 'Rainbow Hedge' cactus in a 2-1/2" pot. I noticed that the soil was bone-dry and had pulled away from the sides of the pot. So I watered it. Now, a week later, it has shrunk and become mushy. Is there any chance that it will recover?
@CactusCaffeine2 жыл бұрын
Oh no, mushy is bad. You can try to cut off the bottom mushy part, let it callous and try planting it. Though I doubt that you have enough left to plant considering your cactus pot is small, means your cactus is also small. 😔
@karolyn86442 жыл бұрын
@@CactusCaffeine Thank you. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I will cut off the top & see if it will callus over, but fear it is just $20.00 in the trash.
@karolyn86442 жыл бұрын
OMG, I tried that. The instant I touched it with the knife it came apart, semi-liquified mush all the way through. I've never had a cactus rot before. It was disgusting, shocking, and rather sickening. I'll get a new one in the spring. In fact, I have one on order from High Desert Gardens in Santa Fe to be delivered in April. Since it is one of the most "desert" of desert cacti I will hardly water it at all. If it can survive with almost no rain for many years in its natural habitat, underwatering will only do it good.

Hey Ana! thank you so much for all of the good information on watering I have been wondering this as it’s my first winter with a big cactus/succulent collection and I have been nervous about what to do. I live in Pennsylvania it has been snowing and raining nonstop and I keep my cacti enclosed on an unheated glass patio That I heat at night time if it goes below 35 degrees Fahrenheit. do you think with all of the rain that I am having that I should just continue withholding water? none of my cacti look too wrinkled so I have a feeling there’s a lot of moisture in the air. thank you in advance!
@CactusCaffeine2 жыл бұрын
Unless they are too shriveled, no need to water. High humidity is helping them and your soil get moisture from the air. Let them rest for now. And you get a break as well. 😉
