DUDE, Thanks for this! Very in-depth with the teardown. I have a '99 and it's true -- once you start tearing shit apart, that's the rabbit hole you create for yourself. I went from replacing the stator, to now changing the oil and coolant.... replaced the rectifier, gonna de-grease and likely switch out the chain and sprockets.... then I'm gonna install Heli-riser bars and an extended windscreen. I also bought a new fastener kit from SpeedyFasteners out of the UK. Gonna be nice when she's done. Still a little scared to take the brakes apart though...

Oh yeah, the big thing with these is the Reg/RecThey cook themselves for fun!...fit an after market mosfet type and solder the wires with heat shrink over them instead of the connecter block

Dude don't take the rear axle out unless you need to. I have owner VFR's. You do not need to disassemble unless the hub is corroded and the eccentric won't move to adjust the chain. Don't regear until you ride it. It's like a twin with torque at low rpm 4 to 6k pulls good for street and will pull to the red... it will sound like a 350 Chevrolet and I don't think you will need to change the hearing once you test it. Also there are ways to eliminate all the linked brakes and end with standard front rear and 10 pounds of dead weight. Txt me if you have ???'s

Great video. I have recently bought a 2001 VFR of similar mileage and will be interested in seeing how you get on with your project. First thing I did was get a front mudguard extender to go with the rear hugger. I intend fitting a stainless steel exhaust with Scorpion end can as the original exhaust is made of mild steel and are known to rust badly.

Pipboy, Thanks very much for posting this video. This will help all of us 5th Geners' out. I have a '98 and have not done anything with my swing arm, chain....or anything else at the rear end yet. looks very tidy now.

I have a '99 and done loads of work on it. Will be delinking the brakes and doing the valves (16k miles) Your starting problem may well be that the start valves need setting up and make sure the fast idle / choke lever is working and isn't seized. Nice find!

Once you ride it it would behoove you to keep it. Especially if you have never owned or ridden one!!!

I have a vfr 750 which i use on the track Not the fastest but what an engine I have thrashed this thing to death for over 3 years Just change the oil and go thrashing time after time I dont like to abuse machines but this one i have and it just takes it Re the rectifier I got a hose pipe off a vaccume cleaner placed it at the front ran it back to the rectifier and never had a problem it just keeps it cool My mates have spent thousands on their bikes for the track I keep up and have just as much fun for pennies and they do handle ok Mine always gets attention due to it looking like the repsol moto gp bike sheep in wolfs clothing comes to mind but hey bikes are for fun and trust me i have plenty of fun on this old vfr I will never swap it for anything else just love it to bits Now looking at a 800 for the road you just can't beat them not so sure re the V tek ????????????

The bike will have a fast idle lever, I barely move mine in summer, but about 1/4 in winter. Failing that, worth syncing the starter valves too. Beef up the stator to RR plug under the left rear fairing. New chain can go on connected by moving left foot peg assembly, be sure to note links needed with gearing changes. Check stem bearings, maybe raise the forks 5-10mm... then just ride it till it kills the RR

Good Vid really interesting even though i dont have a VFR. Should do something similar for the MT-09 for all us MT-09 owners without much mechanical knowledge :)

Why the hell are you looking at a Honda badge??? You are getting smarter as you get older. The best were from 93 to 97 carburetors and cam gear drive
