So the exact sequence is hard for me to remember, but you can see by the video (toward the end) of me and my friend trying to remove these little fuzz buckets from my room that this was odd behavior.
It was ALWAYS something I wanted to do...touch a hyrax, and if I remember correctly this was the first time I ever touched an adult wild hyrax. It took some mighty warm heat source for them to not feel threatened enough to just flee the scene the moment we came in.
In fact here in Kenya a LOT of people think hyraxes are rats, because when they come across them, most the the time, the hryaxes dash away so quickly that all anyone sees a blur of brown. You don't even notice they don't have tails.
So yeah, this was just the best. The BRAKES she puts on (or he, I don't really know) when we try to push her, was remarkable. You can't really lightly push them away at all. Those legs are muscular!
Someday I will make a proper outdoor heating something-or-rather to attract them to sleep where I can actually see them. Usually they are above my window at night and I can't see them from inside the house.
So anyway, it's been a while since I made a video and I feel like I may have more time to throw stuff up, especially early footage of baby Squiggy.
Thanks for watching my goofy stuff. I feel bad I put no production value into this, but I get the sense that my viewers are okay with just this mish mash of videos and stories and photos. Tell me what you think!

My conscience tells me wild animals should stay wild....but the temptation to invite hyraxes in every night for warmth and snacks and pets would be very hard to resist. 😅❤

@@squiggythehyrax The Great Beast would indeed give you domain over all the lands on Earth ... just so long as you provide heated platforms for them. I'd say that's a fair trade.

The beast is majestic!! I love that you live among them. They have tentatively accepted that you are sharing their domain. Let them stay up there if they want. Or get them heating pads. They deserve to be spoiled! I want a home full of Wombats, tiny Mouse Deer, Hyraxes, Quokkas, and Capybara!!

One really unique thing about Squiggy is that if I took her around outside she was curious about every single thing she saw. If I took her to another house and let her go she would explore every possible thing. They are very inquisitive.

It is a tempting idea to simply let them loaf atop there but ultimately it would just be better for them to not start messing with technology, especially if they start messing with the cords and stuff.
@squiggythehyrax
@squiggythehyrax 10 күн бұрын
Yeah once they are grown they don’t really mess around with stuff. They aren’t like stressed out adolescent dogs. I mostly don’t want males marking territory inside or any of them trying new pooping spots. They are known to take over a room or house and start new toilets. It gets tragically gross if they don’t have a relationship with the humans in the house.

@squiggythehyrax
@squiggythehyrax 6 күн бұрын
So, my experience is that some of the wild males will mark some areas with urine. And I would also have to be quite intentional with teaching them where to poop. If they pick their own spot, it becomes a massive situation because they will all copy one another. Wild ones, also, would all have to learn the physics of the decorations and things in my shelves. They would figure out to stop knocking things over, but the learning curve would be a pain. Plus they would congregate on the stove, my electronics and anything with heat like the back of the fridge. It would be a pain in the ass if they don’t grow up inside the house. And it could easily get over run on this property. I could end up with 12 or 15 running my house. That’s too many. I think my house would max out at 3. It would depend on which three it is. But yeah, it seems lovely, but in reality I probably can’t let it happen.
