So I have to put it out there that playing past the kill screen is even harder than John makes it sound. I'm sure he's aware and wanted to keep the video brief but level 29 speeds (aka kill screen speeds) are when the blocks start falling every frame. At 60 frames a second the pieces are falling 60 blocks a second. The board is 20 blocks tall giving you literally a third of a second to place each piece while rolling. Rolling isn't some magic movement method that just lets him move the pieces, he is tapping the back of the controller into his thumb at 25 to 30 taps a second. He is doing that for each piece in a third of a second. The pieces in NES Tetris are completely random (unlike it's modern counterpart which has the 7 bag system) and stacking is unbelievably hard to do already without having no time to think. And he is doing all this over and over and over again for roughly 30 minutes. Scutti is an absolute legend for this. Much love to John and Hank for sponsoring him and bringing more light to the NES Tetris community because it's a cool community. (As a side note 2 other players have crashed the game since he did Fractal and PixelAndy both very good players!)

Close but it's only 1/3 of a second. Three times faster than 18, at a full second. And roughly half again 19, at half a second. 18: full second (1 block) 19: half a second (2 blocks) 29: 1/3 a second (3 blocks) I don't know if you could even see 60 blocks a second. Like think of milliseconds on a stop watch... 😶 That would actually be super human...😊😊😊

Considering the largest Classic Tetris event in the world (CTWC at the the Portland Gaming Expo) is still so small that the prize money is crowdfunded live during the tournament by the audience and tetris community, having a real sponsor for a classic tetris player is HUGE. It’s so amazing to see a game I love being legitimized in this way 😭
@thomasdalton1508
@thomasdalton1508 6 ай бұрын
CTWC does actually have a bunch of sponsors. The Tetris Company itself (I think they put $10,000 into the prize fund, which increased to $20,800 after crowdfunding) and then a bunch of gaming companies. The sponsorship covers operating costs and enables them to pay for top players' travel and accommodation to make sure they can be there if they can't afford it themselves.

A little technicality at the start there. That isn't a space shuttle, it's the Buran, a Soviet clone of the Space Shuttle
@echoharmony926
@echoharmony926 6 ай бұрын
Calling it a clone isn't really true. While it looks quite similar, there are several ways it is refined over the US original. The boosters are liquid fuelled, rather than solid, meaning that they can be shut down in the event of an emergency, such as in the Challenger disaster. It could also be flown autonomously, removing the unnecessary human risk and financial cost of flying every mission with a crew. However, it didn't reuse the engines, as they are attached to the core on the Buran. There were some interesting proposals for further developing the Buran, such as adding fold out wings to the side boosters so that they could glide back to a runway (these weren't parachuted, as they launched over a desert, not an ocean). In the end, the program was cancelled after 1 launch, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, and there wasn't enough of a low Earth orbit launch market to justify the Buran.

This is more than good exposure for Complexly, in a way it validates the effort these kids put into games. This kid got crap off a news reader, saying he should go outside and play, or something like that but an educational company sponsoring him show’s they don’t think it’s a waste of time. It’s more of an indication of the kids dedication and persistence, and that’ll get channeled into other things later in life.
@thenovicenovelist

Hello John, I've been watching your content since I was a very young person, and I am no longer a very young person. Checking KZbin to see what you have posted has been part of my routine for years, and some of your videos (like "Perspective," "I Kind of Hate Batman," and your frank discussions of mental illness) have fundamentally changed how I see the world. I still describe my creative headspace as Cheyenne, Wyoming because of you. (I even went to Cheyenne! It's a lovely town) What with all of the KZbin retirees this year, and your own discussion of your place in KZbin, I've been kinda dreading the Vlogbrother's End Screen. We all know it will come eventually (All moons are temporary), but that doesn't mean I'm looking forward to it. But with that said, after you mentioned at the start of the year that your uploads may not be as consistent as they once were, my own feelings towards the channel have started to change. I still log in on Tuesdays and check my subscription feed, but instead of expecting that you will have made a video, I instead feel grateful when I see one. It's like, "How nice. John wanted to make something for us this week. What a nice thing for him to do." I hope that when this channel reaches its end screen, it is something that you and Hank choose together rather than something that is chosen for you. But I hope that you know that until that point comes, people like me will see your uploads and think, "How nice. John wanted to make something again." Whether you retire tomorrow or years from now, I'll always be grateful for the things you've chosen to make for us. I hope you know that.

Not to add a dark layer to this story, but I have seen a lot of stories about Blue Scuti's triumphs, but most coverage doesn't mention that Willis's father had past away only a couple of weeks before this happened. I love that the people I support support people like Willis.

This was 100% the kind of news I needed right now. Had a kind of stressful day with some really-not-all-that-funny anxiety spikes (for very little reason but that's anxiety for you), and this little piece of wholesome awesome news just gave my brain exactly what it needed. Actually tearing up a little

oh man that's wonderful! I was watching THE game in replay on the next day (KZbin pushed really hard on me) but without the context that he is trying to crash it so I was totally confused by the ending ;) Had to dwell into the history of last few years of Tetris competitions to understand the achievement, as last competition I was following rolling Just appeared! It's amazing what those kids have done in just a few years! Sponsoring bluescuttiis such a power move by you two)

Thank you for explaining this to me. I told my husband that I was sure I had beat Tetris as a kid on my Game Boy, I remember the shuttle and space ship. So, I didn't understand what this was about. Go Willis! Being able to figure out how things fit together has honestly been more helpful in my day to day life than almost anything I learned in school. You will go far!
