You have more restraint than I do. I met her a couple years ago at one of Hank's shows. I felt kind of bad for bothering her but I'd wanted to meet her for nearly a decade (I'd known Hank for some time but had never had a chance to meet her) so I couldn't stand it. I approached her, had a short conversation with her, and then left her alone, but I've never quite known whether I did the right thing or not. =\ I have to admit, though, I'm really glad I had the opportunity to talk to her at least once. I think she's fantastic.

Happy Christmas! The Christmas Pickle is an ornament you hide on the tree! First person to find it opens a gift or gets a special gift, depending on what the family does. That is the more modern tradition of it anyway.

As others have said the Christmas pickle is a thing. It is a German tradition of hiding a pickle ornament and whoever found it got an extra gift. A fun story about Christmas pickles is that about 8 years ago my sister and her doctor ended up talking about that his wife collected Christmas pickles, so my sister found a carved and hand painted wood pickle ornament and took it to her doctor's office. He cried after she gave it to him and told her it was one of the most thoughtful gifts anyone, let alone a patient had given him.

We have fruitcakes around the holidays because before refrigeration, cakes didn't keep very long. One cake that did last though, was the fruitcake. So people would have fruitcakes because they could be prepared beforehand. It was also more affordable-ish to make. They would also ice fruitcakes with this really heavy icing that helped preserve the fruitcake.

first, I was literally exactly halfway the video when noticing Katherine her sweater. (good Harry Potter) second, the tree is because of the Germanic tradition of liking trees and thinking their gods spoke through them and when converting to Christianity they were like "yo okay we will celebrate this thing but it falls with our thingy about light so we want to keep the tree and lights" and then the Christian people were like "oh hell no" but accepted it and now it's a thing for almost everyone. Let's all give a big hurray for what we learn in history in the Netherlands (for the pickle, I don't know. never heard of it to be honest)

It's a tradition in my family to put a pickle on the tree, and when younger family members come over, they look for it. The first one to find it typically gets a prize (usually a regifted thing). At least in my family, it's a way to keep the kids entertained through the duration of the evening.

For anyone interested, there's a new book called Christmas: A Biography by Judith Flanders. I just got it from the library a few days ago, so I'm not done reading it yet but I'm about 100 or so pages in and she goes through a comprehensive history of Christmas and where all these traditions came from and how they changed across the world. Some of what Hank and Katherine said was right...some wasn't, haha. But that's why this book is so informative! If you love Christmas or just want to know more, I highly recommend it!

As a German who has worked at Epcot (where there is a whole store selling just Christmas ornaments, including pickles, which are supposed to be a German tradition, though most Germans have never heard of it) I have had a soooo many conversations about what the deal is with the pickle! I eventually ended up writing a fairytale-like story to explain where this supposed tradition might have come from, because nobody knows and it's just so absurd :D

Once, I was home alone on Christmas Eve. Feeling a bit listless, I wandered to the fridge to try to fill the lonely hole inside me with food. When I opened the door, the only thing inside was a single pickle. "Where did this pickle come from?" I thought to myself. "I don't even like pickles. I know I didn't buy it. Why is there a single, unjarred, slimy pickle sitting in my refrigerator?" I looked around to make sure I was truly alone. I reached out to poke the pickle and make sure I wasn't hallucinating. When my finger touched its wet skin, the pickle came to life! "Hi!" it said. "I'm the Christmas Pickle! I've come to spread joy and holiday spirit to those in need of cheer!" What a wonderful night we had! We watched Pottersville on Netflix because Love Actually wasn't available. We wrapped last-minute presents, sang holiday songs, enjoyed hot cocoa (a mug of it makes a lovely hot tub for the Christmas Pickle), and even went on a short sledding excursion in the backyard! (This was much more exciting for the Christmas Pickle than it was for me. There aren't actually any hills back there, just snowdrifts that built up from shoveling the driveway.) As it neared midnight, the Christmas Pickle asked me to return it to the fridge. "It is time for me to move along, and time for you to get some sleep!" it said. "Remember that I am never truly gone from you. I'll always be in your heart!" I shed a tear as I closed the door to the fridge, knowing I was truly honored to have received a visit from the famous and mysterious Christmas Pickle. I know now that it is my sacred duty to spread as much holiday cheer as I can every year, in memory of the strange, jolly food that started it all.

Yeah, a movie about how any person can radically change the world for the better and any one who's kind has a life filled with riches is a bummer.

In Australia, we enjoy prawns (shrimp) and leafy greens alongside your typical fare at the Christmas dinner table. Some of us enjoy visiting the beach on Christmas day. Other than that, and the fact that most families will have their air conditioner on full ball the whole day, it's very similar to your Christmas.

I love the Jugband Christmas! So underrated. So sweet. Also I never thought I'd live to see Vlogbrothers shout out Chris Fleming. Magical.

Refrigerator = The Frig = The Icebox. (The latter was what my family called it when I was a kid even though we had electronic refrigeration.)

My mom calls it "The Icebox" as well - and I attribute this difference to the same reason why some people call it Soda/Coke/Pop - regions! My Mom was born and raised on the West Coast...

This elderly couple that used to babysit me thousands of years ago used to call it the "Kelvinator", which was an old name brand, but not the brand they actually had as I recall.

I always thought an icebox was a freezer or cooler.

Laura Lumos - An Ice Box usually refers to a type of refrigeration that was common, at least in the U.S. and Northern Europe, before electric powered refrigeration. Huge amounts of ice would be harvested by cutting it out of frozen lakes and rivers in the winter time. It would be transported to ‘ice houses’, i.e. warehouses, for storage. From their It was distributed over the year to homes and businesses. People had insulated ‘ice boxes’ , i.e., refrigerators in their home in which the ice was used to keep food cold.

We do the Christmas pickle! It's a German tradition. My mom hides a pickle ornament in the tree on Christmas eve and then the next morning whoever the first person is to find the pickle gets to open the first present. It's fun. I'm not sure if everyone does the Christmas pickle the same, but that's what my family does--we also just like hiding and looking for things....die hard Easter fans.

For those of you who are curious, Katherine's sweater is limited edition merchandise for the wizard rock band, Harry and the Potters. It was sold in 2015 and is no longer available to buy but you can find their music and merch at the DFTBA website :)

The Christmas pickle is a Christmas tradition for some people in the United States and Canada. A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree, with the finder receiving either a reward or good fortune for the following year.
