How exceptionally fitting that out of all the books to use as your example you grab "The Name of the Wind." Not just for the obvious reason in the title, I have read the book, because it talks about the names of things and how that works. The second book goes more in depth with that idea, both are great reads for many more reasons than that.

Hold on, though, Hank... Verbal communication isn't really something that can be done by only one species, is it? What with dolphins and stuff? Or did you mean speaking in the exact same way and/or at the level of complexity of language that we do? Also, 'mot juste' isn't so much a word as it is a /pair/ of words - funny thing, though, since, with those two words apparently being from a foreign language, those two words only mean something in the English language when they're together but not apart, isn't that right? Hey, I wonder if there's a word for that - an expression wherein the words it combines only mean something in that expression? Or, for that matter, a word or expression of one language, such as English, that obviously hails from another language?

Love this post Hank!! I'm a qualified Speech-Language Pathologist, and the amazingness of words and language continually amazes me. But did you know that there is a disability called Language Impairment where some people have severe, lifelong difficulties learning and mastering words and grammar? It affects around 1% of the population and has a HUGE impact on their ability to communicate. Imagine if even putting a sentence together to express how you're feeling or what you're thinking was a huge effort. In Australia it is a recognised disability in schools, but once kids graduate they don't get any more disability recognition and have difficulties accessing support, they basically have to fend for themselves. They have a normal IQ, but reading, writing, speaking and listening will always be difficult, having massive impacts on their educational, vocational and social opportunities. And most people don't even know it exists. I hope that one day we can raise awareness of this impairment, and help people access the support they need to reach their potential and overcome these barriers. But in the meantime, thanks so much for highlighting how amazing language is, and how lucky most of us are that it just comes naturally. You rock!!!

Chimeras involve lions, goats, and snakes. Not an elephant or llama. Right? Or can it be more broad?
@teunvandenbrand132410 жыл бұрын
Chimaeras are when a body consists of cells from two genetically distinguisable sources. Chimeric mice are/were popular animal models in lab studies. A healthy blastula is mixed with embryonal stem cells from another mouse that has the target gene modified. The resulting baby mouse has cells from mouse 1 and from mouse 2 mixed together.
@IamSamys10 жыл бұрын
It can. Wikipedia says: "The term chimera has come to describe any mythical or fictional animal with parts taken from various animals, or to describe anything composed of very disparate parts, or perceived as wildly imaginative or implausible." But you are right, the original chimera was more specifically mixed.

I kept mixing idioms today and was trying to figure out if there was a word for that. I found 'malaphor' which seems to have been originally coined in a Washington Post op-ed piece in '76. It is an absolutely brilliant description and everything I could have hoped for when I went out to seek if the word existed. 'Malaphor' is a mix of 'malaprop' and 'metaphor' which is what happens when you mix idioms BUT ALSO 'malaphor' is a port-manteau which I think just really subtly hits the ball on the head of what you're trying and failing to do when you mix idioms. Gosh. Malaphor. Brilliant. Now spot where I used one here.

Only one species can talk on the whole planet? I'm not so sure about that. Dolphins are pretty intelligent, and they have their own language and communicate, I think at least. Humans are the only ones who can understand what humans are saying.
@thinkingplace449610 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've always wondered about that. Do you think that other animal, even the technically unintelligent ones, have some method of communication? And if they do, shouldn't that be considered a language in it's own right? Ant's are a great example, they aren't very smart animals yet they somehow manage to function as a colony perfectly. That seems to suggest some method of communication, even if we're not entirely sure what it is; or how it's done.
@MreeAik10 жыл бұрын
Joshua Middlebrooks I think most animal species have some form of communication, be it to convey basic things like "stay away, this is my area" or "I want you to make babies with me" and stuff like that, but to call it a language completely depends on your definition of language. A guy called Charles Hockett came up with "design features of language", which a lot of linguists (at least partially) agree with, but it's still debated. I recommend reading the wikipedia article which also mentions animal communication things :)
@throwaway10210 жыл бұрын
well there's definately a difference between language and simple communication, and Hank says specifically speaking, not language. But I mean, whales make noises that convey an idea to other whales, which is what Hank is basically saying. Yeah language is a bit more complex than going "weeeeeeeeooooooooooo" but that's kind of the point Hank is making. We make strange noises and others' can know what we mean
@AGirlCalledLevi10 жыл бұрын
There is some scientific research that suggests whales and porpoises not only have a language, but also possible dialects as well. Regardless, I think, with out further study, we can't definitively say that human's are the only species that have linguistic communication.

In French class, I would just occasionally think about how weird it is that we just make sounds at each other that conveys meaning and different areas have different sounds that they make to do it. Also, we make markings on paper or chalkboards or the internet(?) to that also convey that meaning. Language is just so weird, and it took trying to learn another language for me to appreciate that on a different level.

I find it really intriguing that Hank talked about this today. I was recently given a chapter of a book that relates to why humanity is so different from the rest of the word in its ability to use language. Our ability to use language and to describe things and such has been of great value in the evolutionary perspective but it also causes us a lot of suffering as well. Our language is so complex and our reasoning skills so well-defined that we can think in terms of words about dangers that are not physically present at the current time which causes people stress and, in some cases, anxiety. This very talent that we have to be able to talk and form words about words about words causes us so much suffering we don't even realize it a lot of the time.

But there still isn't a word for a non virgin. THE LEXICAL GAP STILL EXISTS AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL
@OlleLindestad10 жыл бұрын
1. Nerdfighteria (or someone else) coined the term "virgout" to address this problem. 2. But of course the real problem isn't that there isn't a word for non-virgin; the real problem is that the word "virgin" exists at all.
@danieloconnell29310 жыл бұрын
Just because some people use a word that can be used in a completely non-offensive manner to belittle others doesn't mean we should get rid of it entirely. Is it a problem that "uneducated" or "disabled" exist as words? The problem is the context in which they're used. Edit: Also, virgout will never catch on.

Like, for example, how there's no English word for Schadenfreude...so we just borrowed that one! :D
@TheSapientity10 жыл бұрын
I feel like they're less frequent, mainly because sometimes there's a single word in a language that needs an entire sentence to describe in another. See schadenfreude. Though it only really works when the person you're talking to knows the same languages...
@Flocko_10 жыл бұрын
IceMetalPunk Actually there is an English word for schadenfreude! Epicaricacy. It's almost never used. In fact the only context I've seen it used in is to correct people who say there's no English word for schadenfreude! Like this!
@PumpkinSparks10 жыл бұрын
TheSapientity But that's what I mean. I realize that there is a lacuna, because another language has a word for that thing. Like Schadenfreude! Or the fact that we don't really have a word or describtion for "coming out" or "being in the closet" in german. We have to describe it in a long scentence or speak denglisch! :(
@PumpkinSparks10 жыл бұрын
Flocko7x that is the most epic word ever!

I'm studying linguistics at university, and you're right, language is amazing and I'm only just realising how complicated and intricate our language faculties are. Please do a video on linguistics someday, because no-one knows what it is and always ask me "What languages do you do?" and I just say "ALL OF THEM."

In this case, patient - with a lot of outtakes. In general: gabble - "To speak rapidly or incoherently; jabber." is all I can find. Personally, I'd like coining "fusceloquation" from (L. fus = "pour") + (L. celer = "fast") + (L. loqu = "speak") = a fast pouring of speech.

I think that if you talk fast you are either an auctioneer or a person who thinks a lot of strange concepts a lot of the time.
