You're absolutely right about the word "dracul". In modern Romanian it means "the devil", but in Vlad's time it also meant "the dragon" and it's 100% the way Vlad and his family used it. In fact the name of his line, the house of Drăculești, essentially meant "descendents of the Dragon" and Vlad's chosen name, Drăculea, meant "the son of the Dragon".

I think I read somewhere that the Latin term "Draco" originally bore the meaning of "serpent" or "dragon" and it was only in Ecclesiastical Latin that the meaning started to be associated with "devil" Regarding Vlad's surname, Țepeș (the Ț is pronounced like the "zz" in "pizza", and the ș at the end is pronounced like the "sh" in "cash" or "wash") has roots in "țepuș" or "țeapă" which is the Romanian word for stake. I cannot think of an appropriate equivalent for the verb "to impale" in Romanian. It would usually be described by the idiom "a trage in țeapă" (to pull through the stake)

When impaling his victims Vlad didn't just shove the sharped sticks into their bodies. The spikes entered through... the backdoor, if you catch the drift. The weight of the victim then slowly drove the spikes further and further into their body. They lived longer and suffered longer because of this.

The reason the name Steven is prevelant is because of Saint Stephen…but not the one from the book of Acts. Rather, King Stephen I of Hungary who was kind of like Alfred the Great on steroids in terms of his importance to the development of Hungary, to the point that Attatütk is probably the only real comparison I can think of for a man who left such an imprint on his country, to the point that he was canonised by Gregory VII, which is why his name remained so popular among Hungarian royalty and aristocracy for centuries to come.

I can confirm as a Romanian that you very often see the enemy/antagonist/devil/monster in fairytales be dragon shaped. They're known as "balauri" (plural form), sometimes also looking like a sort of hydra, having multiple heads. They are very commonly depicted as the beast St. George is killing in his famous depiction.

Tepes is derived from the romanian word "Teapa", which is the spike Vlad would impale people on. It's basically him being called Vlad the Impaler, or Vlad the Spike dude? XD whichever you prefer. The word in modern romanian is nowadays mostly used to mean "scam", so you would hear Romanians basically saying "that guy impaled me on a spike!" (he fooled/scammed me).

Since I was a kid, my cousins have claimed to be direct descendants of Vlad III. I'm now wondering if they're direct male bloodline descendants of Dan the Pretender. Could be. But I also think it's likely that Dan the Pretender had brothers and cousins who were also Dans that have direct male bloodline descendants today. Next time that I see one of those cousins, I'll ask them if they know the answer.

It's possible (though I'm not certain) that the popularity of the name Stephen comes from St. Istvan, or Stephen I, who was coronated as the first king of Hungary when the title was created by Pope Sylvester II in the 11th century. His crown came to symbolize the rule of Hungary, and was used in Hungarian coronations until the last Hungarian king was deposed after World War I, but was preserved even after the monarchy was dissolved when the communists took over.

The many Stephens (István - you actually pronounced it pretty well!) in Hungary (including my father) can be attributed to Saint Stephen I of Hungary, the first king of Hungary, who is concidered the founding father of the country. Hungarians before his reign were nomadic people, kinda like the Mongols a few centuries later, following their own pagan religion. Stephen and his father Géza realised, that for Hungary to survive it needs to adapt the customs and religion of the Western European powers. Géza started this but it was actually Stephen, who successfully (although rather violently) formed the pagan tribal society of the Hungarians into a Christian kingdom. History proved him right: at that time there were several similar tribal groups roaming in Eastern Europe but only those, who adapted to European culture and were transformed into Christian kingdoms survived. Even though this wasa political thing, Stephen actually became a true Christian himself. His wife, Gisella of Bavaria was a devoted Christian and later as a widow went into a nunnery and is venerated as Blessed Gisella in the Catholic Church. Their son, Imre is also venerated as a saint. He died young in a hunting accident (just like William II not long after him - under similarly suspicious circumstances). Since Stephen had no surviving sons, he offered his kingdom to the Virgin Mary, who is considered as the patron of Hungary to this day. So as a founder of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Hungarian Catholic Church, Stephen is a really popular figure in Hungary (somewhat like George Washington in the USA - although they lived in very different times under very different circumstances). That's why Stephen (István) is such a popular name in Hungary, because he is a great saint and a national hero.

I am a descendant of King Edward III, which Queen Elizabeth is a descendant of King Edward the first, Edward III grandfather. So I am related to the royal family, so technically I can say I descend off of Dracula, Vlad The Impaler.

No, you can't. The Queen descends through her father's mother, so it's a completely different line than how she descends from Edward III, which is through her father's father.

2:40 actually that is (supposed to be) common knowledge for romanians as long as they finish school (since books that are mandatory for tests etc contain this knowledge), "balaur" which today is closer to dragon in romanian used to mean devil, (or a evil spirit, forgot exactly which) and "draculea" meant dragon, which now means devil. They somehow reversed the meanings of those words over time.

Fun fact: John Hunyadi’s father was wallachian, so the killer of Vlad’s father was half romanian 😅

One of the most historic buffer states that had leaders put on the throne by others I can think of is Armenia, the Romans and Parthians/Sassanids fought many wars over it.

Romania is a lovely country, and I wouldn't mind having property, there, either. :) Back in the Early Renaissance, such buffer areas existed everywhere, and modern political theory uses the terms "shatterzones" or "shatterbelts" to refer to them. Since the fall of the USSR, the Eastern European shatterzone has shifted eastward, and now runs through Ukraine and Georgia, on the south and southeast. Belarus is the westernmost of the old Soviet territories, and it's flanked on three sides by western-oriented powers -- some of which (the Baltic States) have even been accepted into NATO. That means it's now part of the "shatterbelt," now, also and that sort of geopolitical situation tends to make leaders of such areas rather tense. That helps explain some of Belarus' questionable activities, lately.

Romanian here, and it's really refreshing to get some history about your people without all that patriotic bias. I remember that in school during history classes we were told about Vlad as a national hero who was a just ruler and fought against ottomans for the country freedom (and that all the bad image he got was manufactured by the Hungary king to justify why he didn't help Vlad with soldiers and resources in his wars against the ottomans). But obviously I never heard about him being put on the throne with ottoman or hungarian support or that he attacked Brasov at some point, or that many of the nobles he killed were not exactly corrupt but because they were not supporting him. Fun fact: whenever there is a political crisis in Romania you will always hear some patriots talking about how we need another Vlad to "cleanse the country of thieves". Because it is pretty largely believed here that because of Vlad's harsh punishments, the country back then was clean of thieves and murderers. P.S. Keep up what you're doing, your videos are awesome! :D

Tepes is Romanian for The Impaler. So Vlad Tepes is Vlad the Impaler. As for Stephen being a common name it probably goes back to St. Stephen or King Stephen I of Hungary
