It must have been hard on the resistance to feel confident. Especially the SS Officer who brought his wife and kids to the castle for protection from the people his own people had imprisoned. But for Lee... If the Army was anything like it was in my time in service, he must have been cocky as hell. Will the Americans come save us? Maybe not... But I'm American, and they'll send half a battalion to get me back even if it's just to court martial me for this stunt!! He essentially made himself a willing hostage in need of rescue. Oh, and I made some foreign friends who also need a ride out of here...

@@Isometrix116 Part of it also is that Hollywood would instead let the production die out and not see the light of day, seeing how, since the 50s, the Allied nations wanted to portray the German people as all evil people who aren't savable. Even in 2024, the victors don't want people to know that some Germans still had their human dignity intact.

There actually is an imdb listing for The Last Battle about the battle of Castle Itter. It's listed as in pre-production and Sabaton is listed in the soundtrack section. I don't know if things have stopped or slowed down due to Covid, or if funding has run out, or if work continues remotely on it, but we might actually see a film about it in a few years. :)

One of my favorite Sabaton History is the one about the six days war, from the music Counterstrike. It's incredible to see how a new and small nation, surrounded by enemies, managed to go into the offensive against three much larger countries at once and win. Also when you asked about the timeline, Captain Lee arrived on May 4th and the Waffen-ss arrived, started reconnaissance and attacked late on the 4th and into the day of the 5th. Finally, the Nazis' definitely didn't have time to cut the communication line, those tanks left to guard the line of retreat also protected Captain Lee's ability to contact the larger part of his command.

This would be a great movie if done correctly. Too bad it has been stuck in development hell for years. Hollywood has no intention of showing the German soldiers in a positive light despite what Major Gangl was like but this event is not widely known about in the US. I am so glad Sabaton and other people are helping to highlight events like these on KZbin. Yes, we shouldn't glorify Nazis but we should note Germans and Austrians who fought against Nazism once they were able to do so.

When Indy mentioned passive resistance in Austria, I’m reminded of a beautiful film I watched recently called A Hidden Life about the Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter. He was a devout Catholic and, before the Anschluss, was a pillar of the community. He alienated himself and his family by being the only person in his small area that saw the Nazis for what they were and voted against the Anschluss. He was eventually called up for military service in 1942-1943, he refused to take the oath of loyalty to Hitler and was imprisoned, brutalized and eventually executed as a traitor. A beautiful film by Terrance Malick and a wonderful story about a true hero. Highly recommend it

Also since you were wondering here is a link to the story where the Japanese aided the British. In Java, the Dutch civilians would have been massacred by the Java military, due to them being previous colonizers and probably not particularly fair or just to the natives of Java, if other Dutch colonies are anything to judge them by. The Japanese soldiers defended them and when British forces arrived the Japanese were placed under the overall British command to continue to defend the Dutch civilians on Java. japantoday.com/category/features/how-japanese-soldiers-helped-the-british-in-1944-java-conflict

Castle Itter is private property now, so better ask permission first before you visit. ;) Interesting fact that no one has ever mentioned: Erich Blechschmidt, Gangl's second-in-command, wrote that Itter village lies slightly above the castle. "An attacker can therefore target part of the castle courtyards with effective fire from this section." I'm guessing that's where the sniper was.

This is one which does make me wonder about what happened to some of my nth cousins who left the UK in the 17th to 19th centuries to the colonies, one of which turned out to be rather rebellious. . . I'd known from childhood that some had settled in the antipodes, some in Canada, and an unknown number in the US. Of course, our family name is not really rare, but it isn't exactly Smith, Jones, or Wright either. And although in a reserved occupation and as a pacifist, my grandfather was non-combatant in WW2, he certainly had a pair, as he served as district gas officer in the ARP (Air Raid Precaution) wardens throughout the war. It was not known if the Germans would use gas bombs against us, and every member of the population was issued with a gas mask and trained in its use (and in assisting children with theirs), and it was made a criminal offence to be more than a few seconds away from it. As district gas officer, my grandad's job (just like all his comrades in that role all over the country) was to inspect any and all unexploded bombs, take samples and make tests of the soil as they were dug out by sappers, before it was cleared for the heroes of the bomb disposal teams to defuse them. I only learned of the details of the role after his death, and I don't believe he ever told my grandmother that he was actually swabbing UXBs when on call-out, and taking a sample from the bottom of each fresh hole made by the carefully used spades of the sappers. Not bad for a reserved occupation pacifist non-combatant. There is some serious iron in the nerves of us Lees. I doubt if anything I will ever do will require that kind of nerve. The Sabaton song I really want to hear is one they haven't written yet, but I hope they might, someday, as it is right up their street, and perhaps you may wish to research it and do your take - the sacrifice of 155 Battery, Royal Artillery, Sidi Nsir, Tunisia, 26th Feb 1943. My father served in the RA in the 50s, and it was legendary then, but has now been forgotten by all but scholars of military history and a decreasing number of RA servicemen, and now, women.

I have a problem with one sentence in the text, so I would like someone to explain it to me. And it's American troops and the German army Joining together at last. At last? English is not my native language, but from this it seems to me that someone regrets that the German and American armies had to wage war against each other. Here, Hitler is one to blame, but in fact, the German and American armies should be together. Against a common enemy. A Slavs, for example?

It is still there, is a private home now, should be respected as such and I get the impression that the owners are not very accommodating of people trying to appreciate its historical significance. The narrative that accompanies the song here is largely accurate but cannot begin to tell the full story, for which you are highly recommended to get a copy of Stephen Harding's book 'The Last Battle'. My main dispute with this narrative is the disposition of the SS major Schrader, who is portrayed as a disaffected Nazi turned Austrian resistance fighter. Looking Gangl up, there is no doubt he was exactly that and is regarded as a hero, having a street in nearby Worgl named after him. Schrader was a soldier, badly wounded in the leg and convalescing at home in the village below the castle. Whilst there, he was expected to turn up at the castle and report to the commandant at regular intervals to show that he was still there and still unfit to return to duty, however those visits invariably turned into a drinking and reminiscing party. According to the book, he visited and conversed with the prisoners while he was reporting in which led to their surrendering themselves to his protection when Hitler committed suicide, the main Dachau camp was on the point of being liberated so the commandant committed suicide, and the castle commandant and guards decided it would be to their benefit to quietly disappear. When you created this post you would not have known this, but there is a movie to be made of this story, based on Harding's book, and I will be looking to be at the head of the queue to watch it when it comes out as this is one of my favourite stories from the war.

Hi, if you’re looking for another reaction video idea HBO had a 2 episode special a while back called Assume the Position about little quirks in US history like the history that isn’t actually true or the history that was left out (one of the things he mentions is Paul Revers ride and how Israel Bissell made a much longer ride but his name didn’t rhyme with anything so that kind of thing) with Robert Wuhl. It’s all done in a very entertaining way and it might be interesting for you to give some extra context to some of the topics he goes over. I think it’s on HBO max but if you don’t have HBO I have it on my hard drive and would be more than happy to upload it to the cloud for you. Also I don’t know the laws and I don’t know what you can show on your KZbin channel so obviously if it’ll get you in trouble don’t do it lol. Also I just found out they have short little clips of the two episode series on KZbin so you can check it out before hand.
