If you travel to Scotland, be sure to head up to Orkney-it’s an amazing place! When I was in Britain for the first (and so far only) time, Orkney was my favorite place after Rievaulx Abbey. Just tons of history and prehistory to explore, from 5000 year old tombs, temples, and villages, to Renaissance castles and a WWII POW chapel that is a gorgeous gem made out of two Quonset huts.

6:03 - Yep you are correct. When Alexander died he left behind a pregnant wife - Queen Yolanda who would sadly miscarry; leaving 1 other decedent of Alexander, his daughters daughter, the 3 year old- Margaret Maid of Norway. Numerous claimants to the throne rebelled at this time and skirmished ensued which made Eric II of Norway reluctant to send his daughter to Scotland; 4 years later when he finally did consent to her journey (to england) she died on the travel as a result of food poisoning.

I'm dubious of the notion of the French "protecting" Scotland - French involvement was, let's be charitable, minimal during the First War of independence - the significance of the Auld Alliance was the message it sent to England. Intriguingly, by comparison, Scottish involvement in the Hundred Years War was salient enough to influence the outcome

Great video, my only gripe is the fact that at the start, he shows the Scottish Saltire but shows the Union Flag to represent England. This is annoying due to the fact that it was a Scottish King who actually united the 2 countries and commissioned the Union Flag. He get's it right later in the video though.

Those Scots got around. I'm Salish Indian on my father's side and always figured I was fully indigenous but was surprised to find a Scottish ancestor there. He was an agent for the Hudson Bay Company and was sent into the North West territory with his wife a Mohawk woman. They settled in what is modern day Montana and their family line blended into the local tribes. This was early to mid 1800s.

5:28 Scots is not derived from Norman French at all. Scots is a Germanic language derived from Northumbrian Middle English. Part of Northumbria was incorporated into Scotland in the 12th century and from there the language spread. It is distinct from modern English precisely because it was less influenced by Norman French than other dialects of English further South. How can they claim to have researched Scotland and yet get things like that so wrong? This video is terrible.

My great grandfather "Scotty" (clan Hay) from Aberdeen hopped a ship to America in 1906. He burned his clothes which had become lice-ridden and took a train westward. He made it as far as Wyoming and decided he'd had enough travel, and became a cowboy then and there. "Hay" derives from the French word for "hedgerow," as his clan originated from the Norman Vikings. The clan motto translates to "keep the yoke" -- the legend goes that a Danish invasion was repelled because a Hay father and his two sons grabbed some farm equipment and rallied the fleeing Scots. The Hay clan was rewarded with land encircled by the flight of a falcon, which is featured on the clan crest. What is your clan story?

I'm generally not a fan of overly sarcastic because he makes a lot of mistakes, he is clearly biased e.g. in this video and he doesn't include a lot of things in his videos because he knows they will harm his agenda of portraying England as the baddies something you can see in his Ireland video as well. He stated that England Treated Scotland like a colony after 1707 which is really false the British banned the clan system and a lot of things in the highlands but after 300 years of infighting you can understand why. Lets not forget he completely ignored the part where the scots invaded northern England countless time during the 100 years war they pillaged and burned in fact the village I live in was raided by the scots as well as many castles nearby me. P.s I'm half northern Irish which means I'm allowed to criticise Scotland as I'm only half English. extra p.s my mother is northern Irish and of Scottish descent which is extra criticization points

It's an ok overview, but it tends to get some details wrong in the summaries that give the wrong impression. Calling the Jacobite rebellions independence wars and suggesting Scotland was treated as a colony are two big ones. Edit: He also loses points for inserting his own assumptions of "Scottish context" around people like Adam Smith, who were very much pro-Union with England.

6:05 Margaret, Maid of Norway. Died of "seasickness" at age 7. Was queen designate for 4 years but never crowned. She was actually the granddaughter of Alexander III. His daughter, Margaret, Maid of Scotland, died aged 22 from childbed fever. She was the wife of the Norwegian king Eric II.
@johanmilde
@johanmilde 3 жыл бұрын
For more context on the young heir and the succession crisis after 1286: After King Alexander III of Scotland died unexpectedly in 1286, the only direct heir to the throne was his granddaughter Margaret, the 3 year old daughter of King Eirik II Magnusson of Norway. She remained in Norway for the next few years, as her father, the Scottish regency council and King Edward I of England arranged for her to be betrothed to Edward’s son - the future Edward II. The summer of 1290, the now 7 year old Margaret was supported to sail from Norway to Scotland for her inauguration at Scone. The English had sent a lavishly outfitted ship to fetch the young Queen, but it was sent away by the Norwegians and they chose to transport her with their own ship - there are several possible explanations for this. Although the Viking age was long gone, Norway was still a proud seafaring nation who might have seen the offer as an insult - and/or it might have been a bit of paranoia on King Eirik’s part about entrusting his only child to the English. Perhaps because of said Viking roots, the Norwegian ship sailed straight across the North Sea instead of a longer, safer route along the coasts - and straight into a storm. When the battered ship finally found its way to Orkney, Margaret was so affected by the journey that she died shortly after coming ashore. The contemporary explanation was that she died from seasickness, a more modern explanation is some sort of food poisoning - it is very easy for food and water to go bad on a ship, even easier when everything is thrown around during a storm. And the result was a succession crisis, major diplomatic issues and everything that followed.

Interesting side note regarding the Picts. There is a theory that far from being another Celtic group, the Picts are the ancestors of the original inhabitants of Britain before Celts migrated over from Europe around 1000 BC. The Celts pushed the native inhabitants to the costal regions of northern Britain, and dominate the island for next 1000 years until the Romans came. Then Septimius Severus came over around 208 AD and almost exterminated the Celtic Caledonians , weakening them so much the Picts subjugated/absorbed the remainder into their own cultural group. That’s why the Picts don’t appear in Roman sources until around 300 AD, and the Romans seem to class them as a different group to the Caledonians.

one thing i think a lot the portrayals of the Scottish Wars of Independence fail to give enough voice to (and which 'Outlaw King' pleasantly surprised me in including) was it was as much a war waged by the church as it was by the nobles. The Wars of Independence were not led by Wallace, Bruce or Moray but Bishops like William Lamberton & Robert Wishart & David de Moravia. who feared that Scotland under the thumb of the English meant the Scottish church under the thumb of the Archbishop of York. all 3 men would come tremendously close to being excommunicated in their pursuit to keep the Scottish church free from English control.

A little sidenote from the linguistics degree in the making: We don't know for sure if the Picts were Celts. This is because the only real source for their language is place names and other sources mentioning that their language was distinct. I believe most scholars think that it was most closely related to Welsh, Cornish and Breton rather than Irish and Scottish Gaelic* and Manx (so still Celtic, but not Gaelic) because Scottish Gaelic has some grammar that is more similar to the former languages, which they believe could be a feature borrowed from Pictish. However, the most popular view a few decades ago was that it was a non-Indo-European language, so who knows, maybe the view could change again. *Scottish Gaelic came over from Ireland with the Scoti people

Never tell a scottish person braveheart is anything more than a horrific car crash of a movie. It also always annoys me when people see alba written down and go straight for say it how it looks when it is pronounced alaba. As a proud scot i am currently learning gaelic even though i nmow live in england and aside from listening to bbc radio nan gaidhael it serves me no purpose. But if you want some specific scottish history to react to the stuff Bruce fumey does on scottish history tours is really good tioriadh an-drasta.

I’ve just started on doing some research on my family history. I’ve only been able to connect the dots in family members and dates but I’ve found who my 20th great grandfather is. So far I know he had great grandchildren who lived in Worcester England in the early 1400s.

I was lucky to find that one of my 10h great grandfathers came from a very well documented family line that traces back to Charlemagne. Other than that branch, I keep stalling out once I get out of North America and back to England.

3:45 Little addition to the Macbeth point: it's okay to say the name of the play outside of a theatre, but if you do it inside rather than saying The Scottish Play, then you've gotta run around the building twice, spit, and quote a line from a different Shakespeare play. Obviously, not everybody follows or should be expected to go along with the punishment, and most people who do are doing it half out of respect and half for the amusement.

As a Scottish Person, I can say each part of Scotland has some historical significance, not just the big cities, like Edinburgh, Aberdeen or Glasgow while they do hold a lot of history so do the smaller towns or communities. For example, one of the last Witch Trials in Europe (While the UK was most likely part of the EU, not too sure about this aspect) in 1697 was held in the Town of Paisley. Also, no one in Scotland really likes BraveHeart, among my friends and family at least, we think that not only is it a poor representation of the country at that time, it wasn't actually filmed in Scotland, but rather, I believe it was either Ireland or New Zealand?? I may be wrong about the location of filming but please let me know

James VI/I ---That's the guy whom God inspired to write the REAL English Bible which modern apostates are destroying with their new versions (This a highly sacastic jab at some the loonys I've met). Really, in order to be acceped as king about 1,000 leading Englishmen sign a petiton asking for some assurances that he was going to be nice and one thing they wanted was a standardized Bible so he got a whole bunch of scholars together to revise the Bible and they kinda mixed the Geneva Bible and the Bishop's Bible together and King Jimmy said "Good this will be the official Bible", and it worked pretty well for about 400 years.

I can’t find it on KZbin, Bute there’s this great video of a guy walking around the National Museum of Scotland, looking at the inventions & discoveries area, and going “f*** me, so Scottish people just invented every bloody thing, didn’t they?” then he turns around, and sighs, “oh look, antibiotics”. It’s hilarious.

I fondly remember my experience visiting Scotland back when I was a student in Wales several years ago. During the summer, I went to Edinburgh and there was a 6 Nations Rugby going on that day. Went to the pub to see the game. The blackboard in the front read " today's program: Us vs Them scums". No need to guess who the Scotts were playing that day 😂.

Love following the Politics of UK. The SNP was formed in 1934. To get independence. We have Alba Party, recently formed. We UK is formed from the 4 Countries, we love insulting each other. Although the SNP want another referendum on independence, some of the Districts in Scotland are making noises that they want out of Scotland. Shetland and Orkney have made their views known they will apply to become Crown Dependency status. So it continues. In England we also have Counties that have rivalries. Northern Ireland is the same. There is noises being made over the stopping of Stourmont, the loyalist are getting upset, not good. We have been like this for centuries. Does add an interesting aspect to our politics. No one should deny us the right to argue with each other.

What you said about Shetland and Orkney is not really true. There have been discussions in the past about that but they don't have much weight. What would be much more likely is a sort of Faroe Island style autonomous region self governance within Scotland. Now of course it could happen. But tbh based on way the politics of rural Scotland are going including the Islands there is a good shot that the Islands becoming more in favour of Independence either way. I don't think they will ever vote to leave the UK in a referendum but I think it will get closer than it is there already.

friendly local scot here video was good but left out a few things. A lot of the very horrible things that happened to the scots like the highland clearings and banning of the highland culture was left out and some other things understated. and In the favour of not being 1 sided there were also a lot of Scottish raids on England at the borders that were also left out. a fun fact about the "blue paint" this was called woad and was used by the Celts but more so the Pict elite military. Woad was a plant die that the warriors would strip mostly naked and rub over them self's (this is were the myth of Celts fighting naked and painting themselves to be scary comes from. They would do this and a small group of elite fighter that would act as a kind of strike force. they used Woad as it made them slippery and harder to grab in close combat and it would also increase the chance of blades slipping that piercing straight. but more importantly it was also and antiseptic so any cuts that did occur so they did not become infected. the Pict elite were made up from only sons of noble houses/clans who would be trained as warriors from young age, the rest of common folk would not fight usually unless it was urgent. even though not much is know as a lot of written records have been destroyed the Picts are really interesting to study and there a couple really good summary video's on KZbin of Pictish culture that I'd highly recommend reacting to if you are interested in ancient Scotland.
