Alexander Hamilton is the reason I am here in America today. My Grandmother's Great x5 Grandfather was a Hungarian born Hessian Soldier who fought for the British at Yorktown. He was captured at Redoubt #10. He was held as a POW for nearly 4 years and missed his units shipment away from America. With no reason to leave and every oppurtunity to make a life for himself That Great 5x Grandfather wound up staying in Virginia, changed his name from the Hungarian one to an anglicized name belived to be Turnipseed, which later a couple generations later changed back to Reapsummer (an anglicized version of the Hungarian name), another 2 generations later that family relocated to Northeast Ohio and 1 final generation later married into the Reedy Family. So Thanks Alex

Fun Fact: Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr both attended the same Independence Day dinner the night before the duel. During the party Aaron Burr was withdrawn despite him having usually been extremely social and Alexander Hamilton enthusiastically sang a war song.

I grew up thinking that Hamilton was my 6th great granduncle-my aunt told me that when I was around seven. In researching my family genealogy, I found out that there is an Alexander Hamilton in that position on the tree. But, he’s not THE Alexander Hamilton-ours was born in Pennsylvania in the mid 1770s. Oh, well! At least that’s straightened out now.

Chris, I started binging your content last week. Inspired by you, I went digging into my family history for the 1st time. I thought you’d be intrigued to know that today, I learned that my paternal grandmother’s ancestors were the Radcliffe’s, who served as Earls of Sussex from 1483-1643, including my distant grandfather Robert Radcliffe, the 1st Earl of Sussex, who assisted in presiding over the coronation of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Robert is also the one who proposed to the Privy Council that Henry Fitzroy should advance to the throne. I never would have known this without your inspiration! So thank you!

Dang I thought I got the beginning of Hamilton out of my head but not anymore. Thank you Chris! :) Also fun fact about Hamilton during the war, the battery that he commanded was the New York Provisonal Company of Artillery. Even though the unit was disbanded, the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, which is now apart of the famed 1st Infantry Division, traces it's lineage and history back to the New York Provisonal Company. In fact the unit insignia for the regiment is the crest of the Hamilton family

Hi Chris, love the videos. You're exactly what a reaction channel should be, you add so much to the original video. I don't know if you take suggestions from comments, but I'd like to recommend 'Man in Cave' by 'Internet Historian'. It's the interesting story of Floyd Collins, and the two week long attempt to rescue him from a cave in 1925. It's not your typical topics of world wars or the civil war, but there's still plenty you could comment on. Plus, Internet Historian is extremely popular, so a 'Historian reacts to Man in Cave' video could get a lot of views!

You mentioned being a musical theater fan and obviously a huge Hamilton fan. I'm not sure whether that inclination extends to the Great American Songbook, but I will share that sice I was in high school (in the 80s) and learned about hamiltonian and Jeffersonian views on democracy, I have always Associated Jefferson with Aaron Copeland's Appalachian Spring and Hamilton with Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

I've just found your channel the other day. And as binge watch I've noticed you mentioned the choice of dates for celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I figured I'd throw this bit of Trivia at you. Easton PA, a city a few hours drive north of Philadelphia, celebrates the week after the 4th of July. The city actually celebrates the day the Declaration was read aloud in the town square on July 8th. Easton was one of the first cities to do so. It is also the hometown of George Taylor, who signed the declaration. His house has been preserved and is open to tours. Just some interesting facts.

Lot of stuff said about Aaron Burr in this video that seems very based on Hamilton’s perspective, but from what I’ve learned about Burr he was an incredible figure. Also, from what I understand Hamilton the play is based on a book that isn’t exactly high on historicity. So it’s cool for entertainment but beyond that you gotta take it with a grain of salt

I agree and disagree with Alexander Hamilton on his policy. He laid the groundwork for the best country on this planet but he also laid the foundation for some of the most corrupt institutions that live to this day. Jefferson's and Adam's critiques did hit the mark when looking into the future of the banks Hamilton created.

Actually the Mint was preferred by Thomas Jefferson, as it made hard currency. In fact, the Mint was initially part of the Department of State. The Mint became independent in 1799, during the Adams administration. It was put under the Treasury Department in 1873. Hamilton advocated for paper money, which was not adopted by the federal government until the American Civil War.

I have just finished reading Ron Chernow book about Hamilton and Hamiltons biggest flaws were one he did not know how to just let something go and he was very easily let to react when his birthright or life was been tarnished where more often then not the best curse was to do nothing. One of the major ones was to write in great detail about an affair to show he was not embezzling money. In relation to Arron Burr he seems to be quiet the ladies man with at least one everywhere which his daughter would hear all about

Honest to Pete, Burr needs more research, I find him fascinating what drove him to make the decisions he did and the people he connected with going up and coming down. The alleged conspiracy is worth getting into as well. As for Hamilton… genius. I know that is bandied about so much, but that he had such foresight and was able to basically force a financial system into existence that has endured for 250 years is astounding. Ambition, brains and determination that earned respect even from people who disliked him. Jefferson and him were adversarial and yet, Hamilton’s bust is in the front hall of Monticello as one of four thinkers Jefferson admired.

33:31 he kind of botched that explanation. In most contexts Jeffersonians refered to themselves as "Republicans". The term Democratic-Republican doesn't come about until the 1820s and refers to Jackson's faction of the by then single party dynamic. This term was backwards applied by historians to refer to the whole party for purposes of distinguishing it from the GOP, but is indeed giving way to Jeffersonian Republican.
