I used to use a pencil like that at work. It was a black one and was used to mark faults on plain glossed pottery. The string you pull to unwrap the pencil nib as it wears down.

it's stabilising tape honey, put it in your jersey hem seams (it's double sided sticky tape) particularly on viscose jersey or floppy jerseys to stabilise before you sew, then your seam will be wavy free (it washes away) its genius

The pencil with the string is not actually for fabric, it is for marking non-porous things such as glass or photos. I had to google it.❤
