Being from Iceland (land of Lopi...) I would advise you not to use plötulopi for this sweater. We generally use it held double or triple when making the classic Icelandic yoke sweaters and even then it is very delicate. Also Lopi is very rustic and most people do not like it next to skin. Personally I have used Snaeldan nappad tógv from the Faroe Islands instead of Lopi. It is great for steeking and as a mix of Faroese and Falkland wool, it is much softer and can be worn next to skin. I would also recommend you try steeking a swatch first. Or a baby cardigan, I recommend Gilipeysa by Héléne Magnusson, it is a very cute little Icelandic yoke cardigan for babies and toddlers. You can find it on Ravelry. It was my first steeking experience :-) And I used Snaeldan yarn for that, and also for my own cardigan which I made using a single colour but following a pattern for Galloway by Jared Flood. The yarn was perfect for steeking and I love my cardigan. The yarn comes in natural colours but also in pink, blue, a wonderful mustard yellow and more. The 3 ply is dk weight. Good luck with your project!

Thank you so much for the advice! I will definitely steek my swatch and if it doesn't work out, then swatching it held double sounds like a great idea. If this sweater doesn't work I'm sure I can find another pattern for a hot pink and black combo! 😄 Also, I love your yarn recommendations for DK - I'm going to look at those now. Thanks!

O that sweet beautiful baby!!! Good luck with Guthrie! It will be stunning!! (Good luck with The Woolly Thistle too. 😉 I cannot imagine the state of my stash if she had been in business when I was at home with a newborn!) Knitting with a Plötulopi cake is like having a little wool companion near you; I am only in the swatching stages but love working with it (- too early in the game to offer any perspective on gauge though).

I’m very excited to see how you go about steeking this. I’ve never tried to steek but I find it super tempting.

I steeled my vinterfjell as my first steek & first pullover to cardi - it's not too hard. I added 5 stitches for the steek, probably should have done more. I ran a crochet chain up either side of the steek before cutting & picking up for the button bands. Next time, for the sake of my nerves, I might pick up and knit the button bands before I cut as I was worried I'd accidentally unravel my stitches! So glad I went for it.

Thank you for that last idea! I can definitely see that being nerve wracking.

Lindsay from A Wooden Nest used this yarn for a huge shawl and comment on how it pulled about and broke if her tension was too tight, might be something to consider when picking this yarn to work with. It would be absolutely awesome in those colors tho! P.S. I think the bat looks much happier now ;)

You know, I considered that, but after seeing all the colorwork projects with it on Rav, I decided it'd be ok. We'll see if I curse myself later though! 😆

I don’t know if you’re doing Knit Stars 3 at the end of November or if you’d want to wait that long.... but I believe Ann Budd is doing a steeking tutorial on a small practice project. Also I think that Amy of the Fat Squirrel podcast did a KZbin tutorial in the past year. I’ve been wanting to knit a Guthrie and even purchased my Spincycle for the colorwork but now I’m so indecisive about my background color 🤷🏻♀️ oh well, I have way too many WIPs going now anyway!

Definitely gonna check out that Fat Squirrel tutorial at least. Thanks! And I hope you cast on a Guthrie at some point! Tag me if you do, I'd love to see it. xo.

Research the yarn. It breaks super easily, and knitting it tighter, will break it faster.

Thank you! I will be swatching it, so if it doesn't work out for me for colorwork, then I won't be too sad. I'm sure I'll find something else I can do with all that hot pink and black yarn! 😆

I made a friend the Antler cardigan for her baby and I turned that into a steeked pattern rather than worked flat (no purling yay!). All I did was add five stitches at the end of every round, p k k k p. All you'd have to do is add those same five stitches to the center of the front of the pattern. Hopefully that makes sense. Anyway, my point about the baby antler...try a baby pattern first! Baby flax or flax light. I know Mina Philipp did this in her steeking tutorial on youtube.

Any of Kate davies cardigans are steeked. That’s were I learned how to do steaks. She also has a great tutorial on her blog!
