The team was very different in Torino. Kershaw as still developing and not hitting his stride, he was still looking for top 30 results. Babikov was skiing for Russia and Harvey was 17 and racing WJ's. The other guys on that Olympic team were midling skiers. Solid skiers, but not medal contenders. Things also go in cycles. Sometimes you are fortunate enough to have one or more super talented skiers, sometimes you are not. Look at the US. Perfect example.
