18% loss for automatic/cvt for a RWD car. What would the estimated loss be for a FWD car?
@marckemp9955

10-15 for FWD. 17-25% for AWD.

thanks for your useful information but i have a simple question , so if an engine having 100 horse power at the flywheel turning a manual transmission with a 15% driveloss that means it have 85 horsepower at the wheels , so that means the box stole just 15 horsepower , having modified the engine let say to 1000horse power ,keeping the same gearbox does it steal 150 horsepower ? or just 15 horse power, ?

Your example is exactly why percentage losses are never accurate... if you lose 65hp with a stock car, you will still lose the same amount after it's supercharged. But if you change driveline components (ie. carbon fibre), then the losses will drop regardless of engine horsepower.

@Murat Harman your comment that the car will lose the same amount after it’s supercharged is INCORRECT. With internal combustion engines, what power that is generated that does not make it to the drive wheels is shed as heat. Heat increases as power generated increases. Drivetrain losses follow that trend, as the drive train loss exhibits itself as... you guessed it, shed heat. Heat in the coolant system, heat in the transmission, rear diff, all of that is increased when engine power increases.

Another thing to consider is that transmission and differential you have in a 100 hp car with 85 wheel horsepower will never survive in a 1000hp car. Everything has to get beefier, heavier and they take more power to turn. So it may be 15percent with the original drive train but may be more with an upgraded one. It’s not really a fixed number either, some loose as much as 25% or 30%, think old school th400 without lock up converter and a beefy 9 inch with 35 spline axles and giant tires, wheels and tires matter a lot too. Some components are a fixed number like your tires, your axle shafts drive shaft, while your transmission and differential the ring and pinion portion are percentage.

There's a lot of different factors but the simple answer is yes, it uses the same percentage of the total whether that's 100 or 1000.

15% seems to be the norm at least from the guys in my circle.

same, the only thing ive found are clickbait to 10-20 min videos talking in the air. i know its mostly around 15% but that's just an estimate. i want to know how much is lost at the higher power levels but can find any info...

So a 100hp engine in a car will loose only 10 hp and a 400hp engine in the same car with the same drivetrain will loose 40-65hp? What kind of sense does that make? Lol.
