But that looks like the new one with the usb-c power port. That's just wrong.

Now this IS amazing. I remember using Esxi for a final exam and it blew my mind. Having used Virtual box etc for a while i've gotten used to the performance drop from having a virtualiser ontop of a fully fledged os. Going to ESXI you dont use that bottom layer OS as the ESXI is, in it self, an OS where you can host tons of virtual machines with snapshot capabilities, trye hibernations and offline->live switching. The only reason to why this doesnt blow some peoples brains is due to them not knowing about it or not understanding it. Back in the day you basically had to use server hardware to really use ESXI.

Btw. Etcher is a cross platform tool, means you can use it on Windows, Linux and Mac
@VioletGiraffe
@VioletGiraffe 3 жыл бұрын
It's just a bit heavy, so I do prefer Rufus for Windows. By "heavy" I mean that it's an electron app that weighs something like 250 MB on the hard drive, and the main Etcher executable is a self-unpacking archive that extracts these 250 MB into your Temp folder EVERY SINGLE TIME you run Etcher. Not SSD-friendly!
@user-kd7fw4hn4h
@user-kd7fw4hn4h 3 жыл бұрын
@@VioletGiraffe By that what u are saying, you cannot use VS-Code or the Raspbery Pi Imager or any other modern Electron based Apps anymore. I think it doesnt matter if your SSD dies because of Windows continuously writing things onto it or some Electron App getting used. Please correct me if Im wrong.

I just got a new PI 4B 8GB today thanks to your recommendation and may add a second down the road if I need to expand further or start poking around with clustering. By the way, thanks for putting these videos out and being a way for those looking to tinker and learn to find the knowledge they need to help them do so (and not have to mortgage their homes to get it!).

I wonder will this be available for the Macs since they are moving to ARM chips
@richardwicks4190
@richardwicks4190 3 жыл бұрын
That's probably why they are porting it but the problem is, what are you going to be running as a virtual machine on a ARM based MAC? Linux? Why bother? There are versions of windows that run on ARM, but they aren't full versions and most of the software that is available for Windows isn't available for x86 unless it's from Microsoft - and you can bet that programs are that are available for ARM Windows will be available for ARM Mac. It's kind of neat, but not very useful in my opinion. I really wish there was a full blown raspberry pi simulator for x86. Qemu doesn't really cut it for me. Less work for me just to develop directly on a pi.

@@richardwicks4190 I agree with you totally, I am not speaking from any stand point, just motivating factors to purchase a mac book, I am not married to a platform just functionality and stability, I use old laptops with Linux distros and or Windows and will probably continue like that because I have no need to buy a platform for the sake of the platform. With virtualization one doesn't need to spend a lot on a machine unless of course you just really want to.

Dude! This is nucking futz! VMware on a Pi?!? I've got multiple Pis in my house running NAS, PiHole, an ADS-B feeder for all the flight tracking websites that also functions as a stratum 1 NTP server for my home network. I wouldn't try to combine the NAS with the others, but all the rest could run off just one Pi. Thanks for this vid man. And I probably wouldn't have found it if I hadn't watched your vid on "you NEED a website" and scoped out one of the sites you mentioned. I'm 55 and retired, not looking for a job and have no intention of blogging, but great vid. But this just blows my mind. I was already playing with Proxmox and getting ready to dive into ESXi anyway.

Is there a technical limitation that prevents you from installing ESXi on the SD card? Or do you leave that on Raspian for recovery purposes?

I'm guessing because the higher end USB 3 thumb drives have more write cycles than SD cards. Being used for ESXi will wear any flash related media out considerably faster greatly reducing their lifespans. The higher end USB3 flash drives tend to have higher write cycles and will generally last longer.

I thought this would be some good practice plus give me some different diaries to play around with while giving some experience with virtualization. So far so good! That clustering looks interesting. Might have to check that out. Thanks for an awesome vid!

LOL even if they had an ARM edition, good luck running it on a Pi with even 8gig of ram. It's a pig of an appliance, pretty sure it requires a min of 8 gig of RAM all on its own. I have a copy of it running on my home lab in the smallest VM i could get it to run in which I think is 8gig of RAM. It works and is fairly responsive once booted for playing in a home lab on 8gig of ram, but the appliance takes something like 20-30min to boot to the point you can login to the web ui. And this is v6.7.0, not sure how much more pigish 7.0 is.
@InterFelix
@InterFelix 3 жыл бұрын
@@d0ugk oh, 7.0 is pretty much the same in that regard. It takes FOREVER to boot, which is driving me crazy, and it's eating RAM and CPU for breakfast. Good thing I have two decommissioned Servers with 256 Gigs of RAM and two octacores each as my lab environment at work
@d0ugk
@d0ugk 3 жыл бұрын
I find with 6.7.0 the CPU isn't bad once it's booted and settled down. It's Still a ram pig. My cluster at home is 4 lenovo m93p tiny hosts I picked up for a bit over 100 a pop. Max ram on them is 16gig, so the vcenter appliance eats up half those resources on one of the 4. They fit comfortably next to my qnap nas in one of those Ikea cubby hole shelves, and don't scream or chew power like a rack of servers.
