I think there is a bit of miscommunication / misconception surrounding this video.. I never once mentioned in this video that this dog is not for me, or that I regret owning a German Shepherd, or that I wish I could go back in time and not have bought this dog. Yes, Shadow my German Shepherd is a lot of hard work - it is most definitely a full time ‘job’. But, I wouldn’t trade this full-time job for anything else in this world. I absolutely love looking after him, I love getting to know him more and more each day, it brings me so much joy to learn and to train him to be the best that he can Just to be clear, I am not complaining about owning this dog. I am purely explaining and stating what I have learned after owning a German Shepherd for three years

Thank you for this video! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your experience with Shadow over the past 3 years! Lots to think about when considering getting a dog. The generic info on dog websites doesn’t go into this much detail about specific breeds.

The one thing you need to know about the German Shepherd is that he/she is the gregarious animal by excellence. They are more attached to their pack than any other animal I know, even more than other dogs. They live to keep their position in the hierarchy, they create very specific, very complex relationships with every person or dog around them, they treat every person differently, and they choose the person, or presumably, dog that is for them the head of the pack and live and die for the head. Everything, from the food to the orders he takes and does not take, to the way he greets, to the way he protects, to the place where he sleeps, everything is about being gregarious.

I learned to be grateful when I got German Shepherd. They are the most appreciative creatures in the world. They are motivated by good. They are a ton of work and they have no business alone. They live to combat loneliness. Shadow is very appropriately named. They become just that. They are like people but they have class.

My third GSD is 4 yrs. Old now, as an experienced owner I think you are spot on. Jager is a very high drive dog. Since my other girl, Schotz, passed recently, it is amazing how much more time I need to spend with her. Shepherds need to be with you. Period. But she is after stimulating activities! She gets bored on a 1.5 mi. Walk, off leash. She is a Sable coated West German working line dog. Very intense. My other 2 were American show line, Black &Tan. Much less drive! Although they shed more!😊 If you have read this far, something I have learned: beware of what you are getting. Both in breeding and the amount of work/ attention a particular dog may require! For the novice GSD owner, exercise is paramount. I Rescued Jager, she is papered. But I was her 4th home in 6 mo. Long story short, she has med issues I was unaware of when I got her, combined with her high drive, she has proven to be a challenge. she is a fantastic dog, despite her issues. I am so lucky to have her. I apologize for the long comment.

There are many great comments on this video. Practice leaving them alone beginning when young. Teach them to wait for EVERYTHING. Go through doors first. Exercise and socialize early and often. Get health insurance for him/her, it will pay for itself over the lifetime of the dog. Don't use too many words. Don't be excited when they are excited. Do not acknowledge him/her until s/he calms down, they will learn to calm down quickly. That bathroom thing, yeah, its doesn't stop. The fun, love and loyalty is worth the effort. But she is correct, don't get one unless you are ready for the huge commitment of time and training.

So spot on & true about the GSD. I have 2 females - 6 months apart - I got the 1st one as a bday gift for my bf but she attached to me & the 2nd one wasn’t planned but so glad to have her too. I trained them - walk them almost daily. My bf says they wait for me every morning when I get home from work (I work nights) They follow me everywhere I go at home & indeed they are protective - very protective. I can let people in my house if I am ok they are ok. I took them both to a friends house (they have no pets) - the dogs were having fun there & when my friends boyfriend stopped by my dogs went into protective mode at my friends house - barking at her boyfriend when he pulled into the driveway & when he was coming into the house. It’s not even there house to protect lol. I love this breed best dogs ever.

I've always rescued and fostered German shepherds. They have always been my absolute favourite breed. I could not have another breed. My current male is nearly 10 years old and he still looks so young for his age. I got him when he was about 6/7 weeks old. I wanted him to stay with his mother but the owner who was a backyard breeder (which l did not know of) did not wish to keep him and had already given his other siblings away. He was the last puppy to leave. People cannot believe how old he really is. Usually hip dysplasia is a genetic disorder and most common in sloped back dogs. Fortunately my boy is very straight backed and so far no sign of HD and he is extremely active. I still however give him joint supplements to support his health and prevent any oncoming issues. I want him to remain in the best of his health for as long as he possibly can. And you're right about them being your shadow. My boy is a typical mommy's boy and we are attached at the hip....literally. He always has to be near me at all times and l dont mind. I like him just the way he is. He doesnt like me straying too far from him and he loves his cuddles whereas my female prefers to keep her distance and do her own thing. She is very independent and does not follow me around like my boy does. But she is a rescue from Serbia and l got her at around 8 months old. But when my boy comes into his own he is fiercely protective of me and will not let certain people too close to me. When he was about Shadows age my Kaiser was highly reactive of all people and other dogs but l worked hard and tirelessly with him to get him to a point where he is now happy to meet and greet other dogs and their owners. We keep it short and sweet but he especially loves to visit the puppy classes in our local park and he is the perfect role model. The attachment, love and respect that l have for this boy is unlike anything lve had with my other dogs. As much as l am passionate about this breed l won't get another German shepherd after him and only because l genuinely would not be able to replace him...❤

@@PatrickJDaley they truly are! Think a trip to the vets is in order. Its sad that our furbabies age so much faster than we do and this fact is something l find very difficult to comprehend...

@@sameerazenib9678 my black & tan passed at 13. She slowed down a bit, but still played well with my 4 yr. Sable, right up until the night she passed. She must have had good genetics. I have 2 yo rescue GSD mix. I too learned that this breed has a lot of energy! I take mine to 30 to 45 min walk in the morning and at night. He goes to doggie day care twice a week where he plays ALL day. If i get off from work early I take him to local greenway trail and dog park and on the weekend too dog park and longer greenway trail walk. And yes if you want GSD you really have to be prepared for all the exercise your pup needs! But to me, mine is really smart, funny and loving I wouldn't change for a thing!

Most of these are right. Leaving a GSD like any dog, needs to be built up when they're young (you do need to do it, otherwise they'll get anxiety if you dont). And if you do go out to work, using doggy day cae or dog walkers to tire them out is helpful. The only one i disagree with, is the overprotective point. This is a training point for all dogs, i.e.. mine will bark at the knock, but once she sniffs and gets the nod from me, she goes back to her bed. It comes down to how confident the dog is in you.

I have a 5 year old female GSD my 2nd, I had a GSD 24 years ago. Since then I've had 2 Akita, 2 Pitbulls, numerous other small dogs. I can tell you that in my opinion they are very intelligent and willing to learn quite different from training Akitas. I was told by a dog trainer that you should limit bigger Breeds from stairs and standing on their hind legs to aid in the prevention of Hip Dysplasia. I should have named my GSD Shadow, she constantly follows me around. They are naturally Loyal and Protective. My Penelope doesn't have a mean bone in her, yet she is very vocal when we meet people or they come to the door once she sees my approval she settles down. I agree they should not be your first dog, they are high maintenance. Brushing and removing shedding hair can be a chore. They need exercise of their body and mind.Even For the first 7 months she had runny stool, come to find out she does not tolerate fatty food, so I spend extra for a low fat dog food and because of their activity level they eat alot. I also discovered a lump on her leg which grew rapidly I took her to the Vet and it was Cancerous it was removed and thankfully no signs of reoccurrence. So Vet Bill's are more expensive just do to size. My GSD is quite large for a female she is just a little taller and heavier than an average Male GSD. They are a great dog if you have plenty of time, I'm 59 years old and have been retired since 2002, which allows plenty of quality time. Currently I own a Chiuhauha, Pitbull, 18 yo Poodle and myself GSD, they all play and get along and usually nap together during the day.

Research about acupuncture for hip dysplasia, it helped our dog. We also went through everything you pointed out on this video because we didn’t do our research before getting our GSD 11 years ago, but we learned on the process. You can also try a personal trainer to help with the protection reactions (some people consider it as aggression and it is just their protective nature) towards strangers. I had two German Shepherds, Czarina and Olympia, for 12 years; adopting them when they were 10 wk old puppies. They both passed this year within 2-1/2 months of each other. Both were THE most loving and loyal pups that I've owned, and I've had many in over 30+ years of owning dogs. Now I have two more GSDs, Nabucco, male, 18 months and Ophelia, female, aged 5 years. When I got Nabucco March 13, 2020, I was his 4th owner in 7 months. This is what happens when people get dogs they know nothing about and get in over their heads. Ophelia came from the same breeder as Olympia. She was from a champion pedigree line, and bred 3 litters before being retired. I wanted to give her a good home, but I have my hands full (another story, another time). Moral of the story, if you adopt a German Shepherd, 1) you must be alpha, or they'll take over as they're very smart. 2) You must have room for them -- 85 lb dogs take up volume/space; 3) Do NOT skimp on training (at your peril --physical and financial).

Yeah when I was growing up I had a German Shepherd mixed with a collie. I absolutely loved him. About a year after he died almost 2 years ago, I walked into this puppy store with my friend to just look around. I then saw a female German Shepherd just lying down not engaging like the others dogs were. My mom and my step dad also grew up with German Shepherds, so I convinced my parents to set up a little play date to meet her. We did and we loved her. Her name is Tundra. My parents were super busy over the summer when she was in her 4-6 month period as a puppy, so my sister and I were always watching and taking care of her. Lot’s of work, but well worth it. She’s still crazy today, but I absolutely love her. I know someday in the future I’ll get a German Shepherd of my own, but first since I’ll be graduating college in 2 years I’m going to get a smaller dog or one that’s better as a first dog. This video was awesome though!

@@VNSAW sounds more like dominance and resource guarding. A protective dog only acts in a protective manner when there is an actual threat. They are level headed and stable, no matter the environment. Not to mention, a dog can only truly and fully protect when trained to do so. Aloof might be your dog, but that just means they’re uninterested in strangers and can possibly have aggression towards them. All in all I definitely suggest doing heavy research into what protection actually is. I used to think the same thing of my Rottie but he is just an asshole who needed proper training and he is now able to completely ignore strangers and new people in the home when told to, wether he likes them or not.

GS can be left alone during the day, but its only if they have a yard to run around or get a good run or walk in before you go to work. But each dog is different, some need alot of people contact and time together, some are very independent. They can each be different but the breed is typically ok spending around 8 hours alone if well exercised before work, or they self entertain in a good sized yard. Also depending on how they were raised in early puppy hood it can greatlly affect there socialization and confidence. I get older pups from shelters too, but with out optimum human and mother dog conditions you have to do more work with them. Hip displasia is an issues in all large breed dogs, sad but true. But one thing you should look for in any GS is the back slope, it used to a breed standard but it guranteened them hip disp., now its been put out of the standard but know if you see it your gonna have to deal with it if you get them. One other thing i would add is they are HYPER intelligent and will be a challenge to train if your not strong and consistent. But all GS are incredibe dogs that are well worth the work, beautiful pup by the way.

I feel you with the introducing aspect of a gsd. In our household, no one goes through the door without a proper introduction. Especially when it comes to strangers, or people who barely visit, they would always have to stand at the doorway, and our gsd does a full sniff inspection with all the guests while they stand still. And when they get comfortable and trust is formed with the guest, gsd are very welcoming. But if they just walk through the door, it’s all bad

Shadow is beautiful, its ok to change your opinions, at 57 I'd like to go back in time and give my 20 something self a shake. Separation anxiety and aggression are common in shepherds and may be connected with resource guarding. Speak to your vet about a dog behaviourist in your area, most dogs can be conditioned out of these behaviors. I can see he's a bit of a nervous fella, I think it may be your quick hand gestures that are triggering him. He needs lots of positive reinforcements for correct behaviors and a gentle hand when it comes to corrections. You can replace long walks with a good 20 minutes of mental stimulation each day with low impact dog tricks

German Shepheards can easily be trained not to follow you everywhere. They're super intelligent and know when you want and don't want them to do something. If you say "stay" and then reward them with affection upon your return then they will feel happy that they've done as you asked, making them relaxed when left alone. Following you everywhere isn't loyalty - if that makes sense :)

It's kinda spooky for me to watch, and I actually had to stop watching a few times, because it makes me sad too. I still miss him, each and every day. Very much. Watching shadow connects me spiritually to his missing energy. Shadow has grown into his own being and there is nothing that you can do about it. No matter how hard you try to break it. He has decided that you are his #1 job and priority, and that's just how its gotta be, and that's how its gonna be! I knew when I first saw your videos and saw the very, very strong bond that you guys had, when he was a puppy. I said to myself, " hes gonna change." And he did! Into a fine, strong, handsome, protective, smart and inquisitive young healthy canine beautiful dog. He can't help it. And he loves you sooooooo much, and you have a wonderful and respectful relationship. Because of your closeness, he's going to be reactionary , because he loves you, and because of genetics. Its like the older they get, the more protective, alert, and aware they become. Do not underestimate the SHADOW! Lol. He will surprise you a many times, and always keep you learning something new.

@@VNSAW oh, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. The feeling of loss, after having owned an German shepard, one in which you had truly bonded with. And the saddest part is, because of their loyalty to you, they will try an hang on even longer, even when facing illness, still working to stay with, guard and protect you. Its the last thing they ever want to do, is leave your side forever, because to do so, would be abandoning their duties. And you are his responsibility (in his mind, that can't be changed.) Never ever think of that day though. Just enjoy him now, and spend all of this precious unique time, and years with him. Trust me, you will never forget that feeling and connection that you have with him. But Vanessa, when you say people don't understand about your connection w shadow, what do you mean by that? Please don't let anyone come in between you are your relationship with your friend shadow. A persons connection with their pet, is like no other. I'm very curious if the parents of Shadow were tested for hips/elboww and what the results were if they were Fair, normal, good, or excellent. I know that can be no guarantee and while Shadow does look very well-bred, unfortunately the show line Shepherds have suffered dramatically in the health department as a result of unscrupulous over breeding. The working line German Shepherds have retained their health because health and function is prioritized over looks and profit.

If you are a lazy person or person with lack of time then this dog is not for you! Their loyalty is another incredible insane trait of this dog! They will protect you...AGAINST EVERYONE! Im sure they see everyone as an evil person out to hurt their owner....amusing but also safety issues present here not only for the person on the other end but for the owner and the dog! They are also babies who crave attention. Ours does not enjoy being left alone and when she does and we come home a good 30 minutes is spent greeting!!! Not all Shepherds are the same. As kids Shepherds need more attention but they change as they mature and become a but more independent. Protection is normal and levels change with the dog. American Shepherds are less driven, European lines are very strong protection. They must stay well socialized and they need to know you have faith in them. A strong Alpha is necessary. Their loyalty is fierce. People who abandon them hurt them badly. They will remain loyal until death.
