I am planning to build this actuator from scratch from aluminum. In this way I can make the spring adjustable and seal the stem. Only need to fetch a suitable diaphragm for this purpose (maybe demolish another actuator and reuse the diaphragm).Thanks for the info
@southwest827 жыл бұрын
Marcel Hendrikx honestly from my years of messing with wastegates, it is far easier to use a light spring and use a MBC to control the boost. You will get much more uniform results. I have modified springs before, but once you pop the crimp seal it is difficult to get it to seal right again. I have melted diaphragms before welding the halves back together. Hence why I have gone this route..simple and reliable

Cool. I want to turbo my 6.2 diesel..twin turbo. For about 200 HP. Two VNT 17s is about right, 3600 rpm redline. It has a vacuum regulator tied to throttle for the transmission (TH 400). Your method will be perfect.

I want to install the same turbo in this video on a om606 mercedes, so i just need to bring a vacuum line from the trans to keep it closed and run boost line from the intake manifold to make it work ?
@marcelhendrikx56397 жыл бұрын
Exactly as you mentioned in the video, use the boost pressure on the opposite side of the actuator to control the vanes. Maybe it is necessary to adjust the spring load for the correct response.
@southwest827 жыл бұрын
Marcel Hendrikx can't modify the spring in this unit, it is a 5psi base spring so you can use a manual boost controller

I pulled the actuator apart and moved the spring to the opposite side of the diaphragm. I then rotated the actuator placement to the opposite side of the vein control arm. I suppose this method varies wether you have space to move the actuator.

great concept dude. just to be clear, when you say boost controller,can that be mechanical boost control {dawes valve} or ebc? also is the overall boost pressure set by the vane stops or is it a function of the actuator? i have no experience with this type of turbo, so very new and interesting stuff.

Hello Southwest82.... I am unclear about what you said re: diesels... I am wanting to put one on an VW AAZ...No ECU electronic controls.... I think it's a great solution but it looks to me like you need the variable vac pressure of a gasser... any advice on making it work on a AAZ diesel? Or is the RPM effect on the vac pump enough?
@southwest826 жыл бұрын
Stv tppng unfortunately the vacuum pump will typically put out a consistent vacuum. There are some complex ways to cheat this using a variable orifice but for my personal 300sd Mercedes diesel it was not worth the hassle for me or 10 pounds of boost. Using this turbo on the gas engine however I can really take advantage of the variable
@stvtppng6 жыл бұрын
makes sense. Thank you for you expedient reply!
@southwest826 жыл бұрын
Stv tppng not a problem I just happen to be on KZbin when your question popped up. Since diesels constantly run in boost a good traditional turbo is probably the most reliable option. You can fiddle with the aspect ratios of the turbine as well as possibly a slightly larger compressor but it becomes a trade-off because with most diesels simply turning up the Boost will not add much more power unless you fiddle with the injection pump that was the case with my om617 Mercedes diesel
@stvtppng6 жыл бұрын
I get that... thought it would be easier. If I have time I might make the whole arduino set-up with crank speed, throttle, etc...... but I think it is too complex for me right now. Thanks again.
@danielh49955 жыл бұрын
I have been trying to think through this for an old mercedes as well. It seems to me since diesels dont have throttle bodies to worry about and dont really generate vacuum that a simple wastegate actuator setup (diaghpram pushing on a spring) might work for control. At idle spring pressure would keep vanes closed, at higher RPMs and more load boost would build pushing the actuator back and opening the vanes as it approached the preset boost level. Am I over simplifying this or missing something?
@harjinderkaur23842 жыл бұрын
but isnt it the same thing that vac on one side n boost on tje other so rod travels the same way. why havin vac n boost .?
@southwest822 жыл бұрын
When the engine is not under load/boost, you want the vanes open to allow a less restrictive exhaust. When it is under boost, the vanes will open in relation to the pressure to keep the boost at set point. It is a very simple and reliable setup

Just on the vac side. It has a bleed to atmosphere hole on the actuator side of the check valve, so when the vac drops the actuator can close

@southwest826 жыл бұрын
Ciprian Stetcu on a diesel engine without electronic control it is virtually impossible. The original setup on the Sprinter vans was electronically controlled and I adapted this for a gas engine which uses the pressure differential across the throttle plates. If you use a straight wastegate controller the veins are going to be closed almost the entire time causing an enormous amount of back pressure. That is how I originally control them and it went up causing an enormous amount of problem until I solve it
