I spent two years from Sept 1965 to Nov 1967 living near and mapping the geology of Eielson Air Force Base, near Fairbanks, Alaska. We knew how important this base was as we were in the depths of the Cold War. There were many large advanced radar towers all over the state. It is not an easy place to live and while working on my masters degree I lived in the bush with the bears and moose during the summers mapping some of the volcanic basalt geology. In the summer it was surprisingly hot with 18 hours of sunlight and in the winter very cold with little sunlight. I remember the sun coming up at 10:45 and setting at around 1:30. I never regret living there and learned to love the silence of the winter when snow hung from the telephone lines and the ice fog cradled you when the temperature went below -20 C. My car’s tires would freeze and you had to have plastic shields on the interior of your car windows as your breath would fog all the windows with out those shields. In the winter new roads would open up as the ground was frozen. All the rivers wound freeze solid and some became able to be crossed without fear. It was also a country of extremes. In the spring of 1967 we experienced a major earthquake, then the tundra fires burned all summer and it ended with our cabin under water in the great flood of August 1967. We left the university of Alaska in November for a month long trip to Fort Belvoir,, Virginia for my three years in the Engineer Corps on the US Army. With in a year in was in Vietnam! What a change from the tundra of Alaska. I certainly would have preferred to be back in Alaska!!

I spent a couple years in AK when my father , a Colonel, was in command of the 172nd Infantry Brigade ( Separate), US Army AK. We were stationed at Ft. Richardson. I was there when the army got it's first snow machines. You know how they tested them to see if they were "soldier-proof"? hand one over to a 16 yr old boy and tell him, " see if you can break it?". I drove that thing up ice hills, rivers covered in ice and snow and then up and down dry creek beds on rocks. I finally did break one. But I also taught the army something worth at least one busted snow machine. Never, never, never drive a snow machine with your rifle strapped across your back. It will get caked in snow and ice from the snow and ice thrown up from the tracks, making it impossible to fire. So I "earned" that broken snow machine.

@@sveannnnnnn7578 Ukraine had a massive arsenal prior to the war. Remember that the Soviets stored a lot of weapons in Ukraine. When the USSR dissolved, Russia grabbed whatever they could. But Ukrainians were able to prevent most of the non-nuclear weapons from being taken. Ukraine has a fairly strong military now. I'd say they're in the top 20 most powerful countries at the moment, although that's thanks to Western intel and weapons as well.

Ah, I was raised in King Salmon, during the F-102 & F-106 years. When you were in Galena, I was in Viet Nam. I flew the bush in Alaska for around 15 years; I've been to Galena many times - another pretty crazy place. Your take is absolutely correct. As you might know, they tore down the original Cold War facility at King Salmon, leaving an "automated" maintenance crew facility for the remaining 'remote' antenna operation. They also left the "alert cells" in place; just in case, I guess.
