You KNOW?! I absolutely adore her! She's so beautiful, on the outside but has this inner "charisma" too that's SO nice to see these days! This music is over 50 years old. It brings me such joy to hear and see you react to LED Zeppelin. When I was in high school, hearing them, we had the same reaction. Critics panned them, but they couldn't stop the joy we felt listening to them on the radio and in our bedrooms on our record players. We had never heard anything like it and we fell in love with them. Led Zeppelin rocks on in our hearts.

My favorite part of this riff: Jimmy Page is hitting an open string on an upstroke between those half steps that everyone notices. It’s the tiniest thing to hear but try nailing it cleanly every time through the riff. Everyone hits the half steps but try to consistently hit that open string upstroke in a song that is odd meter and purposefully doesn’t resolve the tension of the chord structure. I love how they use middle eastern melody as an inspiration. This song is the one Robert Plant looks back on as their crowning achievement. Odd meter, harmonic tension unresolved, sexual tension from his vocals, the drum breaks hidden in the changes of the sections and the end of the song, Jimmy hitting all those melodically scribbled glissando guitar lines and how locked in he is in to John Bonhams drums. John Paul Jones creating all that atmospheric tension on the keyboards. It’s their masterpiece, at least according to Robert Plant.

The band was going through a very rough period. Robert Plant was dealing with the death of his son (which is what the song "All My Love" is about), Drummer John Bonham was drinking himself into the grave, and Guitarist Jimmy Page was dealing with a heroin addiction. It was up to bassist John Paul Jones to try and keep the band together. The band was burned out on the relentless schedule of a Rockstar. Back then it wasn't uncommon for bands to release several albums a year. Back then it was album, tour, album, tour, with no breaks in between. That's why a lot of those classic bands burnt themselves out after about 10 years.

I remember and interview with Motley Crue from the mid 80's and they commented that their first 3 or 4 albums had come out so fast it started to feel like they were telling the fans, "Here's our new album." And the fans were saying, "We haven't finished listening to your last album yet." Of course, Crue also had their share of "issues" they were dealing with at that time. But yeah, during this time period, bands were expected to put out an album (10-14 songs), tour for 9-10 months (more if the album was a huge hit}, get off the road and back in the studio to record a new album with at least 8 or 9 songs already written and ready to record. It truly is a wonder how many of these bands lasted as long as they did.

I'm not 61, but was raised with this era of music too (mainly thanks to my dad). The thing that gets me is when the person has a lot of musical intelligence and hears it for the first time, they notice and enjoy the bits that are really unique. Quite often people will like music but not really have a clue what makes it work, or will just not notice. When someone does notice, it's really satisfying. It's even more fun when they notice something you hadn't. I don't think she clocked the fact that the guitars and keys were playing on one time signature and the drums on another, phasing in and out. Some of those drum interrupts reset the time signatures. To be fair, someone had to explain it to me too, but....

Plant said at the first knebworth show his voice was kind of Clamy due to nerves and if you listen to the second knebworth show which is kind of a poor show musically you will hear plants voice is much more full and sounds more throaty in a good way.. at the first show his voice sounds slightly strangulated on the higher parts and more throaty passages. Plants best live vocals for Kashmir were on the 77 tour but nothing beats his studio vocal on Kashmir

bonzo used crazy time signatures that would leave plants guitar playing and then tie back with him several measures later. his triplets and ghost notes are insane. best rock drummer period.

"Kashmir" reminds me of 1975 at the Wildwood, New Jersey Beach and Boardwalk and nightclubs in that area - all good times with "Physical Graffiti" as the soundtrack - I was lucky to see them at Madison Square Garden earlier that year giving a master performance on the release of that great album - I thank you for a fresh listen of this Led Zeppelin Classic and by watching your reaction they still have that magic spell!❤

John Paul Jones was a great bass player, Bonham was a great drummer, Jimmy Paige was a great guitar player and Robert Plant was a great rock singer. They were able to make it work pretty well creatively. I am not the biggest led zeplin fan but they had a lot of magic.

I live about 7 miles away from Knebworth where this concert was held. I can remember being in my garden that night and you could hear them performing, they were so loud and it was quite a still night. I was 12 years old and it opened my eyes to Led Zeppelin and their power.

At this late stage in their career (1979), with Page & Bonham slightly hobbled by drug & alcohol demons, Zeppelin could still easily mesmerize audiences, but to fully appreciate all of their power, range & capability, you really needed to see them during their explosive prime (1969 thru 1972). A period in which they forever separated themselves from all other merely great rock bands.

However, this wasn’t always the case. The Ocean uses a combination of ¾ and ⅞ time. Four Hands is a combination of ⅝ and 6/8, and let’s not get into The Crunge!

The Crunge was only ever a short riff section incorporated into jams on Whole Lotta Love in 1973 and never played again. None of these tracks were ever representative of Led Zep's live performances. You managed to name just 3 tracks from the total of 90 tracks they recorded. And you call that "at times"? Don't make me laugh.

Another thing about this riff is that the guitar part is in 3/4 while drums are in 4/4, so it syncopates once every three tabs, which is just another thing releasing tension. Brilliant writing

I'm not trying to be a troll here. The riff is exactly as you describe but the song is even more complex. e.g. 6:30. which surprised any first time listener. This is a challenging song/composition to get rhythmically accurate.
