Thank you SO much for comparing the Leadbelly version. You're the only reactor who I've seen so that. It really gives a sense of the song. That final scream, pause, and breath kills me every time. The pain, and the passion he poured into every song, and every performance was so clear on his face. This whole concert was a masterpiece, and it pissed MTV, and the execs off because they played almost none of their biggest hits, and did 3 covers of little known artists.

@@captgeech Go watch Montage of Heck, it's a masterpiece. Kurt was an extremely sensitive person and wanted everybody to love him and his music especially. When he thought someone didn't love him it spiraled him into sadness and depression. Every time he acted like he didn't care and said "F You" it was a deflection of how he really felt because deep down he did care what people thought of him too much. He just wanted somebody to love him his entire life and I don't think he ever truly felt intense true love. So that look at the end, in my eyes, is that he had hoped that everybody had loved the song as much as he did because it really was a gamble to play this type of song in this setting. The applause seemed to have ease him very quickly once he saw the reaction.

Oh gosh, joining the others who have commented with admiration and appreciation for catching that look on Kurt's face just before he delivers the last few words of the song. It's an absolutely haunting moment, especially in reflection. Kurt apparently wanted lilies and black draping fabric for the set, saying he wanted it "like a funeral." To me the look in his eyes is that of a man who has attended his own funeral and is realizing that the ceremony is coming to a close -- or like someone seeing his own ghost. RIP Kurt.
@BeardGuy-vz8tn7 ай бұрын
I've said this a thousand times, and no one can ever change my mind. Kurt saw something. 100%. He saw something, as he took that breath, like some sort of "out of body" experience. Right before he belted out the last few words. That's why he's got that look on his face. (I believe) he saw his death, and saw who was going to do it, or at the very least, saw how brutal it was. Unfortunately, all we can do is speculate about what really happened, and have our own individual theories.

It's so cool you brought up the drums. Story goes something like, Kurt was pissed off about how loud Dave was playing and he contemplated doing the set without any drums. In the end, someone went to a local music store and bought brushes, sizzle sticks etc. which Dave hadn't played with but a bunch of the set wasn't played with regular sticks. Dave Grohl has said that they were expecting a bad show because they were all having trouble stripping down to the gentle acoustics with the little rehersal they did. There's tons of wild stories about these unplugged shows, but they all became iconicn There's some

The MTV unplugged concerts are the best thing to come from MTV. Its a gift to the world. And considering what MTV became, and how it just a waste of time now. Its good to remember they used to give the world things like this. These bands, and legends. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and so on. They where given this stage, where some of the most amazing band live recordings ever where made. All because of MTV, and what they used to be. They used to be the place where young people could connect with new people. Back when the internet was new, you still bought cd's and listened to music on tv channels. Also, this song is pretty cool. Because its actually not a Nirvana song, or anyone's song really. Its a old folk song. dating back to at least the 1800's. And then different people started recording it in the 1900's. Including Leadbelly. But it also put if not a different meaning, then at least a different context on the song. The lyrics where from a very different time. The song being about a man, who finds out his wife had been cheating on him, so he walks out into the cold night, and is found dead in the pines. About why or how he died, is up to how and what you take from the song as a listener. This was also the last song of the show, as he said. But MTV wanted Nirvana to go out and give one final number. But they where not sure, because they though they sucked, and it was awful. And that the people hated it, because people where so silent. Later, as the recording became legendary and all that, its clear people where not unhappy. They where just sucked in. And living in the moment with the music, no mobile phones recording or anything. Just them, the band and the music.

Most of Pearl Jam and Nirvana is in standard tuning. Nirvana had songs with some lower tunings and I think this whole unplugged show they played tuned the standard tuned songs down 1/2-step. I watched this whole concert live when MTV aired it. Amazing. When they released the album I purchased it immediately!

The pain in his voice is so hard to hear knowing what we know now. Stll gets me a bit misty eyed after thirty years of listening to this masterpiece.

Woah woah woah….WHAT….you absolutely nailed kurts vocals and it totally freaked me out. In an awesome way but I’ve never heard anyone match his voice although a lot have tried to replicate. Hats off completely!!!! 👏 amazing

When he gets to the part. "In the pines. In the pines, where the sun dont ever shine." Hes from washington state so theres alot of pine forests there. Hes probably referring to here being in the woods where not even the sun can reach her..

I just stumbled upon you because this is one of my favorite songs of all time and I’ve been teaching myself how to play it. I think you’re a bit of a genius. Can’t wait to watch more.

It's sad that the very internal darkness that made Kurt such a captivating performer had to be his demise. But there seems to be a correlation. In hind sight, there is something about his performances that made it obvious, and I almost feel part of a collective guilt for not noticing it before. That is a pained man, not in that moment necessarily, but in general. It has to be incredibly hopeless to be so successful and admired, and to not only not feel fulfillment, but to have everyone look right over your pain in an almost envious way.

Such a nice analysis of this beautiful version. You look like you the same kind of appreciation for music as I do. It’s my life blood

Love that you analyzed this one. If you want to complete your grunge (villain) arc though, you really need to give us a review of either Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun, or Audioslave's Like a Stone. Preferably both.

This right here. That Nirvana Unplugged show is insane. It's like EVERYTHING and i do mean EVERYTHING had to be right for that bit to happen, like it was meant to be, it was perfect.

"We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark-that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." This quote from Hunter S Thompson always reminds me of the "fucking electrifying" face Cobain makes, while taking a heavy breath and flashing his soulless blue eyes - lifeless eyes that few understand - before going in for his last breath and last note. Mostly because this was filmed months before his suicide, and his eyes seem to convey that he knows where he's headed.

Nothing ever will shake the first time I saw Kurt's face at the end. I was just a 11 year old kid, in love with Nirvana, watching the premier on MTV in December 1993. I KNEW something was wrong, I knew he was feeling something, maybe he was "just tired". Now I think he saw the black void coming towards him

I instantly teared up the minute he started playing. He was a genius. He changed music forever. If he hadnt died we would never have had the foo fighters though.
