This is about a movie of a ww1 veteran, lost all he had, his arms, legs, sight and hearing. All he lives are his nightmares, he can't get out of the war, sees his horror 24 hours a day without any way to get out. You both really got it.

That's the key to metal music: Give it 100% no matter what. Because it is real. Sure, give a sad song a dope-ass beat and hellraising guitar riffs. Why not, it's real. It's about intensity. This man is in a pretty intense situation, no one can argue that. So only intense music can reflect that, y'see? And shit, even if all that stuff goes over your head and/or just doesn't hit for you, you still have some excellent instrumental sections to rock the f*ck out to. That's the beauty of well-crafted heavy metal jams, often times the music can carry the whole song. Damn the lyrics. These dudes are just fantastic musicians at the end of the day, and that deserves respect all on its own.

When I watch reactions to this song I'm waiting for some reaction to when the narrator says, 'this young man will be as unthinking and uncaring as the dead until the day he joins them' and immediately the awful truth and plot of the movie is revealed when you here Johnny musing to himself about whether he's alive and dreaming or dead and remembering, I'm glad to see you caught that, not many seem to, they're too busy listening to the melody to notice the words from the movie clips which set the story. Spoiler: In the movie it's the nurse that figures out that Johnny's brain works fine and that he knows and wants to die, but in the end, the general won't allow it and just closes the window and locks the door. Johnny got his gun is the saddest movie you'll ever watch.

The song is based on the novel " Johnny got his gun", the footage is from the film of the same name. Its about a ww1 soilder that got injured by a landmine. He lost his voice, his sight, and hearing yet he is still aware of his surrondings. The doctors though we was brain dead, so they experimented on him for training purposes unaware that they were torturing him. When they finally figured it out, they couldn't decide wether or not to kill him to put him out of his misery. The whole he completely decends into madness. Metallica bought the rights to the movie to use the footage in this video.

It's a LOT to absorb if it's your first time watching it. Wouldn't say people are 'dummies' for not understanding everything going on right away. There are MANY people, including some very intelligent reactors, that have a hard time picking everything up because their not sure what to focus in on. It becomes sensory overload. Or they're focusing on the vocals or a particular instrument(s) and not the underlying story. So are you a dummy also if you don't understand something right away then? You've never gone over something a second or third time and learned something you didn't the first time? Calling someone a dummy because they don't fully understand something right away seems like something a dummy might say.
