This was Metallica's very first music video. I am old enough to watch it's premier on MTV. The video clips that are intertwined in the music video are from the the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" which the band bought the rights to the film so they could keep showing their music video (and using clips in live performances) without having to pay royalties. The line that got me is when the military guy asks the padre "Don't you have some message for him padre?" and the padre's response was "He's a product of your profession, not mine"

I'm the biggest Metallica and Megadeth guy available. But later in your reviews, I would love a rabbit hole of EARLY Journey before commercialisation of their music. There was another lead lead singer named Greg Rollie that interchanged with Steve. I love when Phil does talk a political thought. He's right.

I was late to the whole Metallica scene until this album! Initially, I swore that their music was not my thing as a youngster during the 80's. So whenever my peers would play their music, I just shrugged it off. However, in late 1988, when the and justice for all album was released, my cousin purchased the cassette tape, and we'd blast it while we were riding around ditching high school. The sound just blew me away and drew me in! On April 31, 1989, my aunt, who was like a mother to me, lost her life to a several years long battle of cancer. The day we buried her was the day that everything fell apart for us, meaning her children and myself. We were forced to become young adults raising each other, and we went on a drunken, drugged out binge that lasted for years! That summer, to me, became what I refer to as the summer of our youth, and this album was a strong part of it along with many others. I dove full-on into Metallica that summer as well, and it stuck with me as a favorite. I will never forget that summer and the people I shared it with along with the music we listened to. Since then, we've lost a great lot of or group and the neighborhood to alcohol, drugs & violence. However, the and justice for all album is still as vivid in my mind as all of the faces and memories from those years! luckily, on 11/11/1998, I got sober and remain that way to this very day coming up on 25 years in just a few days. I cherish the memories and hold them close to my being. The good, the bad & the ugly included! Thank you for doing this one and for liking it so much, too. Peace, Love & Happiness - Always!

I think I was only a month or two ahead of ya. I started hanging out with a friend who always played MoP in the car. At first all I heard is a bunch of noise. But I made up my mind to give it a fair chance. Then, my third or fourth time through the tape, it just “clicked.”

'One' was inspired by the story (and subsequent movie) 'Johnny got his gun' about the terrible aftermath of World War I for one soldier who is unfortunate not to die in battle... People forget that World War I was a huge, traumatic event on a global scale that had never been experienced before... The Crimean War of 1853 was a result of tensions between the European empires of the 19th century vying for power and territory... Weapons were being created that expanded the scale and breadth of wars... The American Civil War of 1861 was another regional conflict that sent signals that war games were changing w/ better guns... better cannons... better explosives... Casualty figures were rising significantly. The invention of the 4-wheel car in 1891... the airplane took flight in 1903; by 1916 when World War I broke out in the early 20th century, the first aircraft were used to drop bombs on enemy lines... The distances covered were suddenly much greater and pretty soon, the empires of Europe (and Asia) were at war w/ each other and it was the first time in mankind's history that regional wars were suddenly outdone by a massive military conflict that engulfed a significant part of the world... It was so bad that it was called 'The Great War'... 'The War to end all Wars'... Casualties mounted in the hundreds... then thousands... then millions... not to mention the catastrophic numbers of wounded and traumatized combatants... And it came to an end only to encounter the Spanish flu pandemic that decimated the world's population by spreading w/ the soldiers who fought and aided World War I... Of course, we know that it only set the stage for World War II in 1939... By that point, we had faster airplanes... bigger bombs... missiles... tanks... battleships ... submarines... 3% of the world's population was wiped out in World War II. The reality of war was glorified for centuries to inspire people to enlist as soldiers and defend the glory of their homelands... That reality was destroyed by the Vietnam War in the 1960's... the 1991 Gulf War, when veterans were left untreated for PTSD and "shell shock"... denied benefits and health care after returning home from war... Metallica did a great job w/ their songs by not glorifying it but exposing the brutality and ugliness of it all.

How is air combat worse than having your skin melt off your bones as you cough and vomit up your internal organs? When in WWII did several million die to advance a front line justs a couple miles? What was your point here even?@@sumonjamal1653

"That guy" Is Jason Robards. A legend. When I was young there was so little cinema and post big-band music that everyone pretty much knew all the same stuff. I can't Imagine how daunting of a task it must be for younger generations to find and absorb so many worthwhile artistic endeavors. Be that as it may, it can't be overstated how important it is that they do so. The "churn" that modern music and cinema has devolved into will be the death of creativity and our culture will suffer mightily should it survive at all. If we don't promote that drive to reach back through time and draw inspiration from those greats, those people that made us feel like we were witnessing history in real time, then we've failed as a generation. Hyperbolic? Time will tell. Much love, everyone

Can't believe you have never heard or seen this before. This was my introduction to Mettalica. I've never followed their career as a metal enthusiast, but they deserve the attention. Their music can be (and is) quite complex. Next step: Fade to Black live in Seattle 89. It is a must listen song where you can feel the anger in James's voice.

Nah. Listening to the album version first is the best way to go. Getting the gist of the original mood, dynamics & instrumentation is important. Then watch how they play with it live.

🤘💕 great reaction you two, this is the first time I've seen you so I'm a new sub, can't wait to go and see what other Metallica you've already done so I'll know what to recommend for your future, excited to see where you take it there's so many to choose from... I'll just tell you that this song has become the gold standard of metal, only the best cover it for instance KoRn, and in concert the crowd sings most of it and the pyrotex are incredible! And it's not even their best song LOL... you said this was the first time you'd seen Lars with the double kick drum, another good example of that is Fight Fire With Fire✌😎 I'm a Gen X lady, been a fan of Metallica since day one and it's been a hell of a ride, hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have over the decades LOL

the song without the video overlay is for when you want a banger. the song with the video is for when you're up late on a weekend and want to cry your eyes out. i get goosebumps every time i watch the music video. also, Fade to Black is a really good and emotional song as well. you should definitely listen to that one.

First time I heard this was on MTV when it stood for its initials and not the crap today. That was 1988 and I was 8yrs old. I had this album on cassette.

As the comment directly below says, it was their first video. Metallica was not a new band, but thus far had declined to make a video. There was all kinds of anticipation about this video. This was an event, a scheduled event.
