You're not trying to sound like Slash on that guitar, or like Lady Gaga while playing that piano and singing - focus on being you, and on expressing what you want to express instead. (And obviously, I'm wishing someone had told me that years ago!)

Yeah, I can relate to that too. I was attending a performing arts academy, and would have 3 singing classes on the same day, but with different teachers. The first teacher would always critisize and tell me "You haven't listened to the CD, have you? You don't sound anything like the original singer. Go home and listen to the CD over and over again until you can sing it exactly the same way as the singer on the CD." Then the teacher in the following class would compliment me on my originality. "It's good that you are not trying to just copy the singer, but sing it in your own style, in your own voice." Maybe she was just trying to be nice, but I found it interesting, the different approaches by the singing coaches, although confusing the was they contracted each other, at first. But I preferred the teacher who told me not to copy other artists, but to find my own voice and my own way of singing.

Not everybody has something that interesting or extraordinary to tell, though. Music doesn't always have to be about telling something. Sometimes it can be just for fun and sometimes just for the sake of beauty, sometimes is just a matter of duty or work. This idea of musicians and singers being this illuminated artists is very new and it takes the focus of the music to put it on the person who does the music. I prefer to focus on the music.

@@sakuramari : I have no musical training and no talent, but i've always cringed when I hear a new singer being described as "another Whitney Houston" or whatever. To me, it sounds like the "kiss of death' for the singer because it's basically telling them they're only a COPY, and not an "original".

At the start, Bradley had literally only just got on stage, he had been coerced out of the audience for this performance. So he had no warm-up at all. He did such a good job :)

They probably even had him come to the theater that morning and at least roughly go through it, but mainly for the purpose of getting him comfortable performing in front of a live audience NOT made of extras. i thought he seemed nervous during their performance, but MUCH preferred that to them giving a "polished" performance. AND, i really commend him for stepping out of his "safe zone" and doing it. I think a lot of actors would be too afraid of flubbing it and looking silly, so they wouldn't do it. (And, I can't say i blame them. lol). It's one thing to make a film with directors, crew, etc., and 'extras' and quite another to appear in front of a "real" live audience.

arx754 definitely. It’s like what’s always talked about in these vocal coaching videos-something can be technically perfect but emotionally missing. Bradley wasn’t technically perfect but was definitely emotionally into it.

@@arx754 It was not planned. The audience was asking for several minutes for Bradley to sing and when he agreed, Gaga jumped for joy. He went to see the Enigma show and then went to see the other Jazz show.

What i love about Brad his that his singing isnt perfect but you can hear emotion and feel the story he is telling through the words. I have seen the movie but I appreciate what I've heard and hope this isn't the last we hear him in a singing role. Mother Gaga is amazing as always - she continues to blow me away. I value emotional connection over technique. All through high school my favorite singer was NOT technically proficient, but his raw emotion in songs hooked me. And a personal anecdote, one of the times I felt most accomplished musically was when a friend listened to a new song I was working on it affected him, he felt pain and sadness and desperation. And I knew I had done my job well.

I love that you give positive criticism on what they could technically get better on. Everyone is capable of improvement even masters in craft. As long as the technical issues don’t distract you from the performance itself then it doesn’t really matter in that performance. To get something truly raw and intense sometimes requires you to do something imperfect. To show the genuine feeling.

My band and I play out every weekend. We’re successful not because we’re the most phenomenally technical musicians on the planet, but rather because we connect with the audience, they have a blast at our shows, and we make them feel good. I’m a really good singer, but not because i hit every note perfectly every night, that’s unrealistic... I’m fearless and fun and I trust my instrument, which i’ve been honing for years, and let my performance instincts take people on a ride. Some of my best vocals have come when I’ve disconnected my brain from the technical details and join in the fun. On any scale: massive international arenas, or small local rock bars, people crave palpable connective energy. There is honestly no point in making music otherwise, it nourishes souls on both sides of the stage.

What he said actually reminded me of Ed Sheeran in “Give Me Love” towards the end of the song. How his voice sounded raspy and it kind of almost cracked too. But I felt that emotion when he was singing that line. I felt the hurt of that song. It sounded real.

Something my mother used to say to me before I hit the stage was "Remember, there are great singers, then great performers, but be a great entertainer" It always put me at ease that I didn't have to be technically perfect. Go out there, be yourself. I agree with you. The lessons and the tech are the foundation. It's what you bring to the song that makes it great.

I agree with you, 100%. There are vocalists out there who are technically pure and extremely skilled, but who are emotionless to the point of being downright clinical. And there are others - Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen are fine examples - who may not have great range or flawless skill, but the way they connect words with feeling speaks to a person in a soulful level. When a person can marry both technical skills and emotional connection, it's an amazing experience.

I am a huge Jeff Buckley fan. He dipped in out of key all the time. he would hit a note flat and then raise into it with some beautiful swooning passion. His voice was utterly remarkable but it wasn't because it was a perfect voice. It was fundamentally because of his passion. Same goes for Freddie Mercury. The adulation for him is endless but his voice was never perfect live. He sang lower harmonies because he didn't look after his voice, that didn't make his performances any less mesmerising, or his voice any less powerful. The car analogy is spot on. To me, technique should be accompanied with great emotion. Singing is multi faceted and not just about hitting notes and ticking boxes.

Lyrically and melodically music speaks to most people on a subconscious, emotional level. When we watch live performance even outside of an environment where the performer is required to convey more than just the music, i.e theatre, we still expect an emotional connection between the performer and the music. It doesn’t matter if a singer is performing lyrics about a life changing event they experienced or their neighbours cat! Sam you are 100% correct. We are not mechanical, we are beautifully imperfect, emotional beings and any expression made in that vain is raw, honest and ultimately perfect!

What a lot of people dont talk about is how he isn't a singer, he only really learned to sing for the movie when he decided to do it as a passion project. He worked on his singing for a good amount of time, but nothing close to how long 90% of singers have when they've trained their entire lives. He's able to sing really decently and actually good for not being a singer. I really gotta thank you for understanding this and really looking at him for what he can do and appreciate that.

The; in interviews, he's said that he worked intensely with a voice coach for 12 months in order to become a 'singer" for this film. And, although I don't understand this (I'm not a musician), he had to also learn to sing in a different "octave" than the one he would normally sing in, in order to create the 'sound' for the character he was playing. I'm guessing that made it even harder for him. (?). And,in interviews, he's also said he gained an even much greater respect for singers, because he described singing as "Hard!".

You have hit my biggest issue with singing right on the head here. To be emotive requires REALLY putting yourself out there, and not everyone is comfortable with that. I'm starting to figure out that I never have been. I AM interested in how a person might go about overcoming some of those barriers... although I suspect it's very individual, so making general comments might be hard.

Keep looking hun, it's worth it! All I can say, once you get there, even partly, it gets easier little by little. One of the things is, you need to accept yourself first and trust that no matter happens, YOU've always got your back. Also, try bringing the emotion first with songs that really resonate in you on a deep level, and just go for it, let yourself feel and sing from your heart. And practice, practice, practice, until you know your songs so well that if you eventually do mess up during a performance you can just write it off as a humane blunder and keep your head up high. I got to say you are one of the better vocal teachers on KZbin. I find majority of the other “teachers” fake. I had a question, lately I have been reading critic articles/reviews on Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett’s Jazz album ‘Cheek to Cheek’ and in the reviews they mention Gaga’s phrasing and comparing it to Tony’s. Can you please do a video on her jazz songs such as ‘I can’t give you anything but love’ or ‘but beautiful ‘. These are her duet with Tony-Bennett and can you explain why critics bring up her phrasing. Also she has two solo on the jazz album that mentions her phrasing and the difficulties of the songs: ‘lush life’ and ‘bang bang’.

I’ve been singing for a while but only began learning some of the technicalities of singing recently, bc before that I sang with emotion but was constantly straining my voice. It is so easy for me to feel like when I’m not technically proficient, the entire song is trash. Your ability to point out the value and beauty in the art you hear has encouraged me to love my voice for what it is. I loved your comment on imperfections and making someone have an emotional experience when they hear you. I had a voice teacher that always strived for perfections and then told me I couldn't sing, which actually stopped me from singing for 6 years (not even alone in my car or in the shower). The statement you made about everyone having something special inside and the potential for it to be great is probably the nicest and most positive thing I have ever heard... And that you literally believe in every single person that you come in contact with is just a statement to your personal character and your positiveness in humans as individuals. And I so much appreciate that and that comment alone makes this video greater than a lot of videos that I watched on KZbin in areas of various different content... As someone who is obsessed with music theory and teaches music I have to say emotion is way more a part of music than technicality. I have always taught my students that we learn the rules of music so that we know exactly how to BREAK them and express whatever it is you need to express. I am passionate about music theory and the science behind it but I don’t think that you have to choose one or the other. I’ve heard performances from people who don’t know a lick of music theory and it’s so powerful, but I watch people who do know music theory explaining how much love they found in a piece and worked through it. Music IS emotion and feeling I don’t think it’s possible to unmarry the two

Regarding tiredness in singing, I wanted to ask a question. I recently saw an interview with one of my favorite singers (Floor Jansen from Nightwish, ex-After Forever, ex-Revamp), and she said that the thing that pulls her through long shows, rigorous touring and even throat viruses, is muscle memory. She explained that if she’s trained herself enough on a song, specifically on a really crazy climax of a long sustained high note, muscle memory will pull her through, even though the worst conditions (and in truth, she never Fs up that climax, I heard her crack a little on it once and immediately fix it). While I understand the concept of muscle memory in sports, it’s a little crazy for me thinking on it regarding singing. Could you please explain that concept? And as always, love your videos! The statements you made regarding how much of ourselves is in our singing, and walking away from a bad practice feeling like a bad person really resonated with me. I used to sing live all the time, in choirs, solos, etc. Now I can't even get the courage to do karaoke because of how deeply personal a relationship with my instrument I've developed. Almost a detriment because I now fear sharing it on stage. Although I will happily belt out a tune anywhere else.

Hearing little imperfections make these singers, who are idols or role models to so many people, human again. It makes the setting and everything about the performance just more real, which is great. If all you ever listen to is produced music, and you're trying to sing and sound like them or learn from them, you're always comparing yourself to something artificially corrected. It's a little more of an unrealistic standard. Nobody is "perfect", and that's okay!

Gaga is so talented, she's a real artist. Bradley is also talented, I'm sure he was really nervous to perfom, he's not used to it. They did the movie in front of a real crowd, but the crowd didn't had the sound while they were filming. He did really good during that performance. I really enjoy how you talk about every artists.
